    5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, September 11, 2008
As a student of Business and having a limited acquaintance with law previously, I have to admit that this text is worth every penny. For those of us embarking on an entrepreneurial path, knowledge in the realms of torts, constitutional law, copyrights, cyberlaw, etc. is absolutely imperative.

The text contains recent cases, lower court decision, their backgrounds, abridged text submitted by the court and decisions made by the intermediate/supreme appellate courts. The authors present the text in a format not too difficult to read, but not easy enough to skim through.

Congratulations to Clarkson, Miller, Jentz and Cross for another fantastic text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs to read, November 8, 2009
There were a few sections of highlighting and underlining, but the text was still readable. I am finding this book very interesting. It contains a lot of information-a little overwhelming; however, gives a good overview of the principles of law. It is my favorite book this term. Most books I put back up for sell-I think I am going to keep this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business Law: Text and Cases 11th Edition, October 1, 2008
Great Book. A lot of information with many cases to teach you along the way.

    5-0 out of 5 stars BLAW, February 10, 2009
    -Very intense book.
-Every chapter is concise, yet full of important content.
-We tried to outline the chapters, and found we could not leave anything out, because every line seemed important.
-Despite these sentiments, it is easy to follow and logically written.

2-0 out of 5 stars Typos, missing content, and errors oh my!, November 6, 2010
I got the Kindle version after I already had a hardback version for a Business Law class. The hardback version was fine, but what I found in the Kindle version was that the number of missing passages, typos, and errors was very high.

In one situation, one of the cases was actually missing! I was asked to read in class by my instructor, and had to borrow a book after a few minutes of struggling to understand what case he was talking about. I believe that was in chapter 9, but can't remember.

In other cases the formatting is rendered useless, and if things are in an ordered numbered list, they are just jumbled together poorly.

I just found in Chapter 10, several sentences that were cut off, and mashed together so incomprehensibly that I had to refer back to the paper version. I am sincerely grateful I have the paper version because there is no way I could have answered that take home test question with that passage because it doesn't make sense at all.

It is still useful, for the most part, to take to class, but I would not rely on it for tests. The information is just all to often missing, or has typos that render it hard to understand.

I'm actually very disappointed in this because I was going to buy all my textbooks in Kindle format if I could next quarter, but now I'm not so sure I should.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough - a keeper., August 1, 2009
Out of all the textbooks I have read through, this is one of the only books that I am planning on keeping due to its value in working in business.

This book would be great for any of the following people:

    Business Lawyer
    Entrepreneur, starting their own business
    Insurance Agent
Student learning about Business (Undergrad or Graduate, either)

This book had a lot of information that I took from it and helped me figure out a lot about lawsuits in business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarkson, Miller, Jentz and Cross make Business Law awesome., January 6, 2009
A great book with thoughful summaries and perfectly arranged chapters. The real-life cases make the subject matter much more enjoyable. End-of-chapter sample cases make you think, and the online resources are helpful too.

5-0 out of 5 stars NP Business Practice and Legal Guide is Excellent !, November 30, 2009
This book is an excellent and should be required for all advanced practice nursing curriculum for NPs. I went to school in a different state and then returned to my home state so the practice requirements and laws were quite different. I used this book to prepare for my interviews, transition to my new job and discuss with the person who hired me about my scope of practice etc. Although I was very pleased with my graduate curriculum ( this book was required for my program), this book is great because it condenses all of the info that you learned in graduate school and is an easy read. It provides great references and has all the extra " need to know" info.. SO BUY it! you will be pleased

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes learning the essentials of business law clear and easy, December 14, 2004
I enjoyed this book! So much so that the one I'm selling here is an extra copy (I ordered one that didn't get to me in time so I had to buy another one). I learned a lot and will refer to it in the future. This is a great book for business majors as well as anyone that does not have a law background but will need the knowledge for Public Policy, International Relations, etc. Good information those who would like to start their own business, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must be the best business law book out there!, October 2, 2004
Rich in content, comprehensive, and very user-friendly. Presentation is excellent. Use of color, diagrams and boxes sets it apart from the majority of law books which are nothing more than 1000 pages of black and white text. The auhor also has a very well-chosen set of cases for the reader to see the legal process in practice. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, it is a MUST for any student of law or as a reference for a business owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Actually Took the Author's Class!! Awesome Book. Easy Read., May 2, 2006
I actually took Professor Cheeseman's BUAD 403 Legal Environment class at the University of Southern California! He's the funniest and most interesting professor I've ever had. Read the Haiku at the beginning of the book. It's bizarre until you know his past; then it's hailarious. Cheeseman is a brilliant man. After serving in the Army during Vietnam, he's earned 6 degrees!

This book weighs a ton, but its not some heavy text on legal theory. This book is made for the student. He does all the work for you by breaking everything down. He even puts concept summaries in the margins for you procastinators that cram. The book is not only informative, its entertaining. He explains all concepts with real-life cases. The case studies in the book are the most interesting part. I learned so much from this book. Especially the part on contract law. I feel sorry for people who have no idea how contracts surround our lives. For example when I send out my credit card # on Amazon I'm electronically putting my signature on a click-wrap contract and now subject to the numerous integrated reference clauses I don't see under Amazon. I personally feel much safer with this knowledge and I can thank this book for that. I really wish you guys could sit in on his lectures. You'd spend 2 hours every week laughing. But if you can't, this book is a great substitute.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview book of Business Law, February 2, 2007
This book is full of useful information regarding business law and takes into consideration the ever changing world of international business and e-commerce. I found the book to be easy to read and the use of cases to clarify the type of law or statute being discussed helped to tie everything together in a format that could be understood by the average student. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants a reference manual on business law to keep on their shelf and is a interesting reading for business law classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bussiness Law (7th Edition) Cheeseman, December 23, 2010
I just completed a Business Law 1 class utilizing this book. Business Law (7th Edition) I was worried about taking this class when I saw it was a required class for my degree. The book is the best textbook I have ever read. I wish more textbooks were set up in this manner. It takes what I thought was a very hard subject and makes it understandable and dare I say, enjoyable. I'm considering taking Business Law 2 now even though it is not required. Thank you Mr. Cheeseman. Business people should have this book in their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, informative, and down-to-earth, March 17, 2009
Excellent book, I have used it at the University of Delaware for 2 classes now. This is the type of book every business owner should read regardless of whether they intend to earn college credit. This information is a MUST KNOW! Every citizen of this country would benefit from knowing and understanding their legal rights. The cost of this book is invaluable for the legal advise one will receive. Glad I get to take this class and learn such important info.

It is well laid out and easy to follow and understand. The cases provide excellent demonstrations and memorable circumstances where law has been practiced and determined. I will hold onto this one. Thank you Henry Cheeseman for compiling such an intelligible resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Buy For All Business Students!, August 23, 2007
I took Henry Cheeseman's Business Law class at USC and he is an amazing professor! His book shows it all. Out of all my textbooks in my undergraduate and graduate studies, this is by far the most easy/fun to read textbook, while explaining everything in detail with many case examples!

If you want to get a general idea of what exactly law and business law is, then this is the book to buy. After reading this book, my interest in law sparked! I am actually planning on reading through it one more time to refresh my memory!

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with relevant information, page by page, May 5, 2007
This is the first college textbook that gets five stars from me. In his preface to the students, Dr. Cheeseman calls this book a labor of love. He did not exaggerate. It really shows that this book was written for students. The field of business law is vast, but Dr. Cheeseman manages to cover the essential in one book.

Page by page, he delivers relevant information. His explanations are short and to the point. He reinforces the concepts with carefully selected cases. One of the book's strong features is also its structure. The chapters are organized in a logical and easy to follow fashion. Finally, one gets a little intercultural perspective through Dr. Cheeseman's photography from places and people all over the world.

In short, this book's got it. I give it two thumbs up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that isn't overly dense with difficult wording, full with pertinent cases, November 14, 2006
I really enjoy readnig from this book, which can't be said for all the books I read for class. This books presents information in an easy reading manner and is full of many pertinent court cases. I think the inclusion of so many cases is important as it illistrates concepts while at the same time keeps the readers attention since they are real world settings that are more easily digested.

The only downside to this book, and thus one reason for only four stars, is its large size, which is probably common for most business law books. This book is very hefty! I like reading outdoors at a park or sitting on a bench and this book was mostly too large for me to do this. It would be beneficial to have this book either split to two books, or in an electronic version so that only the sections to be studied can easily be taken with the reader.

Overall great book! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Bennett-Alexander and Hartman's Employment Law for Business, 6/e addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions.

Students are shown how to analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas that do not present clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Employment Law for business, January 6, 2004
As an attorney, manager, and teacher of human resources professionals, I recommend this book. I found that thie information was thoroughly researched. I also appreciated that the legal information was presented in a business context so that managers who are not lawyers could understand the information and readily appy it to real life workplace problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for in the class and in the office, February 14, 2003
This book gives a good comprehensive look at the mountain of law and regulations encountering employees in both the public and private sector. The examples in the beginning of each chapter are very useful as well as the actual cases used to exemplify how the law has been applied to real-world situations.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok, not great, August 5, 2007
I liked this law book because it has shorter versons of cases for quick lookup. What I hate about this book is that it doesn't list laws like ADA, Title VII, etc. in their entirety. It speaks about parts of them, but doesn't list them for you to read yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference manual., August 1, 2006
I really like the way this book is set up and is a very good reference manual for today's managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good textbook for an introduction to employment law, July 9, 2008
A number of reviews of this book are unfairly critical. Reviewers who criticize it on the basis of being too "liberal" or "anti-management" seem to be missing an obvious point. Regulating the employment environment is an inherently liberal idea, designed to protect "common" workers at the expense of the organization and its representatives. Whether you like this system or not is irrelevant; this is the way that employment law in the US currently exists, and the book describes it accurately without any more "bias" than any other book on the topic.

As for the flow and writing, the authors do throw a lot of terminology at the reader in the first few chapters, but this is unavoidable when trying to translate an advanced legal topic for an audience without any legal training. Despite this challenge, the writing and explanations are very clear, and many difficult concepts are illustrated with EXCELLENT case studies and snippets from opinions. I find that students sometimes have trouble with the layout of the book because it is not organized by laws and statutes, but rather by legal concepts and case types that sometimes cut across multiple laws and statutes. Consequently, issues discussed several chapters back do "pop up" again seemingly out of the blue. However, this structure is actually a major strength as the reader can easily find everything about a topic (e.g., gender discrimination) in one place without having to hunt statute-by-statute through the book to find the applicable content.

In short, a great introduction for someone new to employment law, and definitely the book to use if teaching a course on this topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good and easy to read!, January 7, 2002

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Every Transactional Attorney and Business Professional, January 10, 2008
The majority of law books on the market today add more confusion and fog to understanding basic legal principles. "Hide-the-ball" as opposed to "this is how you solve this type of problem" seems to be the status quo. As my first year property law professor once said, "the moment you solve a legal problem for you client is the moment you stop getting paid." So, you can understand why most attorneys and "legal experts" play hide-the-ball. Also, one major reason for the large quantity of litigation clogging our civil courtrooms is due to poor legal drafting.

In "Drafting Contracts," author Tina L. Stark provides the best "How To" guide on the market today for drafting and understanding contracts in the United States. Ms. Stark has checklists, examples, and step-by-step instructions of how to draft a preventive legal document.

    Highly reccomended.

The author wrote this book in such a manner that a high school government student could understand the majority of the legal discussion and implications for school leaders.

Today's educator would be remiss not to read this down to earth text and not pay attention to its contents while working in today's educational environments where one is constantly exposed to being sued.

The author provides the reader with clear and understandable legal definitions, administrative summaries, landmark cases, and interesting legal situations that have occurred in public schools across the United States.

Classroom teachers, school principals, superintendents, school board members, and graduate students all come away with a sense of "I will not do that again" after reading this very practical school law guide.

The legendary Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, considered by most to be the first sports agent, negotiated a $3,000-per-game contract for Red Grange to play professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1933. Today, salaries in the tens of millions of dollars are commonplace, and instead of theatrical promoters and impresarios, professionally trained businessmen and lawyers dominate the business. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. Incidents of agents' manipulating athletes, ranging from investment scams to outright theft of a player's money, are far too frequent, and there is growing consensus for reform

In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire and Timothy Davis, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports, and stiffening requirements for licensing agents. This revised and expanded second edition brings the volume up-to-date on recent changes in the industry, including:

    - the closing of one of the largest agencies
    - high-profile personnel moves
    - passage of the federal Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act
    - the National Football League's aggressive and high-profile efforts to regulate agents

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about American Sports Representation, October 8, 2003
I just wanted to refute the review below. It must be for another book. This book has nothing to do with British sports or soccer. It deals with American sports--basketball, baseball, and football--and discusses both the history and problems of sports representation. As earlier reviews recommend, it is a 'must read' for anyone aspiring to be a sports agent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone looking to get into the industry., September 4, 2008
It takes skill to deal with the massive corporations that are NFL, MLB, and NBA teams, just like it takes skill to play in those leagues. This newly expanded and updated second edition of "The Business of Sports Agents" is a guide to the subject of the title of the book. Covering the recent changes in the industry, including one agency closing in spite of its size, the constant changes that the business faces, and more. It also covers recent legal challenges, and the league's backlashes against some agents' tactics. "The Business of Sports Agents" is highly recommended for anyone looking to get into the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for entrepreneurs -- much more than law, June 15, 2000
Any person beginning a new start-up should pick this up before they get much further than an idea. Though geared towards the major legal issues involved in starting a company, this book covers many of the essentials of beginning and structuring a business far better than most of the other books on financing or building start-ups. I've at least looked through a dozen books on the subject and none has had better, more explicit guidance on dividing founder's equity, options, funding relationship and so much more. I cannot recommend this book highly enough; you'll be at a disadvantage without it. You can view other reviews of entrepreneur books via my reviewer profile.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Entrepreneurs, September 28, 1999
This book is such a fabulous resource that I use it as my primary textbook for the M.B.A. course I teach at Kellogg entitled "Business Law for Entrepreneurs." All my new client entrepreneurs receive a hearty recommendation, and if that doesn't work, a plea, to read this insightful and practical guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the acid test of negotiating venture capital, March 31, 1999
I'm a Silicon Valley executive and entrepreneur. I had to negotiate a term sheet to raise a venture capital round for my company, having never done so. The clear, concise, "human readable" advice in the book gave me all the juice I needed to swing a great deal. What's the ROI on that? And it was a hell of a lot easier and cheaper than iterating with my lawyers.

If you're starting or running a small company, BUY THIS BOOK. It's a must-have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Vital "preventive" legal measures for business novices..., February 7, 2000
I found this book be very insightful. Many people that start businesses rarely think of the broad legal ramifications of their business activities. This book clearly sets forth basic business and legal concepts that ALL persons entering into a business venture should consider before they begin operations.

Individuals with a legal or business background may find much of the information obvious, but to the vast majority of readers, this book is a must, if they are considering launching their own business.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book -- excellent overview of business law, June 9, 2000
highly readable and informative primer on basic business law principles and their application within the context of early stage and maturing companies (from day one of the business to ipo). its use of examples is also excellent. chapter 13 (Human Resources) was particularly helpful -- the information on employment issues and the sample work agreement forms are enormously helpful.

i recommend reading this book before quiting your corporate job and starting your own company -- the 2nd chapter of the book, "Leaving Your Employer," highlights certain legal restrictions that may save the entrepreneur from potential headaches in the future involving their former employer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and readable, August 19, 2006
I've been a CEO for 17 years, and recently became involved with another startup company. Although there was an attorney on the board, I wasn't certain that the corporate form that had been selected was optimal. This book was recommended by the Stanford Center for Entrepreneurship as a great resource, so I picked it up. It has turned out to be very valuable. After reading the chapter on corporate form we switched from an LLC to a C Corp. I found myself advising some pretty smart lawyers on this issue.

The book covers many other topics relevant to startup companies, such as selecting an attorney, forming a board, and developing a stock options plan. What I like most is the authors' ability to provide just the right amount of background information (unavoidable when discussing legal issues) and immediately demonstrating practical implications. There are some useful charts outlining various approaches and their pros and cons: for example, I found the chart on corporate forms (LLC vs. C corp. vs. S corp., etc.) terrific.

The authors use numerous real-life case studies to bring concepts to life. Also, a very nice feature of the book is a substantial fictitious case study that is advanced at the end of every chapter, illustrating that chapter's key points.

The chapter organization of the book by topic makes it easy to pick and choose the sections you want to read. The order of the chapters is a good roadmap for the order in which an entrepreneur would want to consider the issues. The chapter on choosing and managing a lawyer will itself save you far more money than you'll spend on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, also fun to browse, November 12, 1997
This book is a great reference that touches everything, taking the reader through the steps in the formation of a new company. And there are a lot of steps. But my favorite feature of the book is that it is easy to browse. Any page you open to has something interesting on it, and you can start reading there without needing to read everything that comes before. The book is stocked with short real-life examples (with the names changed) taken from the authors' own experiences as business lawyers. Separately, it has a running story of a fictitous start-up going through each of the stages dicussed. My idea of what's interesting may be influenced by the fact that I work for an eight-person start-up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, just not for me., November 27, 2007
This book goes into great detail about all aspects of Business Law. Anyone who currently owns a business or is thinking about opening a business needs to read this book, or at least have it near by as a reference guide.

However, the book is certainly aimed at Corporate USA and those who are looking to start up a BIG business. If you are looking to open or currently own a Small Business, then there are better books on the market that are tailored more to your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference, January 5, 2007
This book deserves to be on the shelf of every entrepreneur. The Entrepreneur's Guide to Business Law will take you on a virtual tour of the start-up process, and beyond, from the legal perspective. As experienced entrepreneurs understand, any business is a web of relationships, many of which are detailed in legal documents. This is the case for the relationship (establishment) of the entity with the state, relationships between co-founders, relationships between employees and the company, relationship between the company and its investors, suppliers, customers, etc. The legal foundation for all of these is clearly explained, and this book includes a wealth of practical information that will help any entrepreneur to work more efficiently and effectively with their legal counsel.

It is so blatantly obvious that the first two reviews were written by the same person--DUH!

No doubt this individual would rather have you buy books on
Incorporating by no-name self publishers who offer only generic advice.

I previewed this book at Barnes & Noble and spoke with some other business people there who highly recommend this book. Now that I have read it and am using it, I recommend it also.

In Incorporating for dummies you will learn

-the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating
-state and federal laws about corporations
-the ins and outs of filing a corporate tax return
-the 10 commonly made mistakes by small corporations
-the best ways to create tax free medical benefits and
    retirement plans
_a guide to business life after corporations

Incorporating your business for dummies is an excellent book for anyone in business. I also recommend Inc. Yourself by Judith H. McQuown and How To Launch a Business and Incorporate in any state by J.W.Dicks.

Conversely, I bought some of the "self-published" books on the internet and on sale here and was terribly dissappointed. Never buy sight unseen.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of three must read books on corporations, November 27, 2003
If you are just starting out, you will find a wealth of information in Incorporating Your Business For Dummies. Read this and learn.

Two other books that are MUST READS are How To Incorporate: A Handbook for Entrepreneurs and Professionals by Michael R. Diamond and How To Start A "S" Corporation by Robert Cooke. You will also want to read a How To Incorporate (for your particular state), a series by J.W. Dicks. I purchased How To Incorporate and Start a Business in Minnesota and was very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book on how to incorporate your business, November 4, 2003
I bought this book along with Rich Dad's Advisors; Own Your Own Corporation by Garrett Sutton.

Incorporating Your Business for Dummies is a good book for the average reader. This book shows how to protect personal assets, save on taxes, set up your board of directors, conduct meetings and more.

I especially enjoyed the part on how to create tax free medical benefits, pension and retirement plans. Very informative.

For even more information, I recommend "Own Your Own Corporation" by Garrett Sutton and "How To Start a S Corporation" by Robert Cooke.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Okay as a primer, November 30, 2003
Incorporating your business for Dummies is okay if you are brand new and know nothing about incoporating or business. It does offer some good, but very basic advice.

Two better books are Inc. Yourself: How To Profit By Setting Up Your Own Corporation by Judith McQuown and Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State by J.W. Dicks. Another good read is Inc. and Grow Rich by C.W. Allen et all.

With Incorporating your business for dummies, you would be better off borrowing it FREE from your local library. It's really very basic stuff here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good as a starter, but you will need more., March 7, 2004
Inc for Dummies is not just for dummies, it is a good book on How To Incorporate, but you will need more.

Some additional books icnlude How To Incorporate: A Handbook for Entrpreneurs and Professionals by Michael R. Diamond. How To Incorporate in Any State: Everything You Need to Form a Corporation by W. Dean Brown. S- Corporations by Robert Cooke.

Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State and The Small Business Kit by J.W. Dicks.

Use the dummies book as a starter guide. Use the other books for the real meaty information. Be careful what you buy, the marketplace is proliferated with books by self proclaimed experts who read a lot but have no real world experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for those contemplating a corporation, February 22, 2004
If you are contemplating starting a business and therefore a corporation, this book is a great first start. As with all of the dummy series books, the authors feel that people reading these books are brand new and know nothing. So this gives even the most naive a good start on how to incorporate.

So much of the information is basic and since the book was written awhile ago, some of the material may be dated. Nonetheless, good first start for business people.

Other good books include How To Start a S-Corporation by Robert Cooke and Brilliant Deductions by Wade Cook. The latter shows a way to drop out of the social security system and offers a good section on Nevada Corporations.

2-0 out of 5 stars just the tip of the iceberg, February 26, 2004
In order to maintain the legal status of your corporation, you need to pass very specific resolutions and keep very specific records. I had hoped for a "cookbook" for the legal steps required to set up and operate my corporation, but this is not it.

The info on corporate structures is very basic and general - you could easily find this level of detail on the web. That's my primary complaint with this book... it mentions what you must do, but doesn't give you the specifics of how.

Instead of this book, I recommend you:

    (1) Get the *basics* from your lawyer or accountant (or even doing some research on the web)

    (2) buy The Corporate Minutes Book by Anothony Mancuso instead of this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Incorporating your Business for Dummies, March 17, 2006
The book gave a good review of the different types of Incorporation. The type that might be best for any business desired with different requirements and tax advantages of each type. Whether one has partners makes a difference in type needed or whether one wants to sell stock in their company or not.
For a primer it is good but one needs a more in depth knowledge or a tax expert to really get more out of the type of incorporation wanted.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Inc.ed myself, July 9, 2003
After reading through this book several times I would have to agree with Donna Knight. This book covers only the basic corporation set up and documention. At times it seams like an add for The Company Corporations services. Make sure you reveiw all 34 pages to see if this book has what your looking for. I would recommend Inc.Yourself by Judith H. McQuown. It goes it to more detail on tax strategies.

Most everything is covered and stays in layman's terms. Using it just once pays for itself! ... Read more

"Concepts in context." It's an approach unique among business law textbooks and one of the main reasons Beatty and Samuelson's BUSINESS LAW AND THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT is so successful in the classroom. From the very first chapter, the authors' superb writing fascinates, drawing students into the concepts of business law within the context of vivid examples and memorable scenarios.Throughout, provocative questions encourage students to reflect about what they are reading-teaching by example using activities that foster active learning and show students how to think through issues from a lawyer's perspective. This book is a must-have for educators. Since the push for inclusion means many students with disabilities are entering regular schools and classrooms with their peers, it is of great worth that the regular teacher as well as the special education teachers know the background of the laws that pertain to these students with diverse needs. It would be beneficial to both students, teachers, and parents to know and understand how the laws are applied in court, what an IEP is, what is expected of the teachers, and what can be expected of the students. I have the other major law books on disability laws, but this one is more geared toward other participants in the process besides lawyers. It is very readable and very understandable without having to go to law school to get a background in law first. I suggest this or rather recommend this to my friends and students who are interested in working with those with disabilities in regular school settings. BASIC SKILLS FORTHE NEW MEDIATOR has been used successfully for self-instructionand as a training manual.Experienced mediators and attorneys whorepresent clients in mediation will also find this book extremelyuseful. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I was Looking For!, July 16, 1999
As a new mediator, I was looking for a book that would describe mediation skills in clear, non-legal language. This book is it! The question-and-answer format is a very effective teaching tool that walks you through the mediation process. When I think of a question that I would want to ask, it seems that the author has anticipated it and there it is. Mr. Goodman is obviously someone with extensive experience, both as a trainer and a mediator. I am a retired teacher and I found particularly valuable the appendix "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About the Rules of Evidence." The author offers an interesting explanation for including this information - that a mediator should have a basic knowledge of the concepts of evidence because we all (not just lawyers) apply these principles in every day life. This appendix alone is worth the price of the book.

I also purchased the companion volume, Basic Skills for the New Arbitrator, so I could gain an understanding of arbitration and broaden my knowledge of the increasingly popular field of alternative dispute resolution. I found that book equally easy to understand and very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for anyone involved in any of the ADR processes., July 27, 1999
Both of Allan Goodman's books, BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW MEDIATOR and BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW ARBITRATOR, deserve to be read and re-read by every ADR professional and every advisor to parties in dispute before he or she enters the session. As a practicing mediator, arbitrator and ADR trainer, I know I do, and it gives me the presence to relax and "enjoy" the session, because I know I will be giving the best process skills of ADR to the parties and their representatives.

Concise, readily assimilated answers to some of the most perplexing problems faced by ADR neutrals are presented at each stage of the mediation and arbitration process. I would further recommend the appropriate book be given to the disputing parties to assist them in knowledgeable decision-making and a successful resolution.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Mediator's Desk Reference, May 25, 1999
Mediation is rapidly becoming the most popular process in the expanding alternative dispute resolution arsenel. Clearly the speed, economy and non-binding aspects are appealing in an otherwise formal andadversarial environment. But less formal does not imply free form. The parties must remain confident that the mediator is knowledgeable of the issues and in control of the process. Allan H. Goodman's new book on the Basic Skills for the New Mediator can best be described as the essential book on mediation. Most books on this subject tend to deal with the art form called negotiation and all the various strategies to be considered by the facilitator in this process. Allan Goodman has provided here insightful and sometimes anecdotal suggestions as to how a new mediator should approach this whole process. In essence, he has left to each mediator his or her own persuasive talents as to how best to resolve the dispute while more importantly giving to the mediator the tools whereby the parties have confidence in the process and respect for the mediator. The question and answer format used here is unique as it anticipates the chronology likely to be experienced by the mediator while dispensing advice appropriate to the issue. While the veteran mediator would be well advised to use this book as a desk top reference, the new mediator will find this book essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, May 1, 2002
I am a construction lawyer in the Washington, D.C. area and found Judge Goodman's book to be just the thing in giving me a primer on mediation approaches. It is organized extremely well, is easy to read, and gave me lots of help as I prepared for my first mediation. The format of questions and answers is perfect for this subject. The only thing I would like to see is a second volume for advanced mediation, since Judge Goodman has much to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Skills for Advocates, Not Just Mediators, June 30, 1999
Thirty years ago I began the practice of law by serving as a Law Clerk to a federal judge. In retrospect, after three decades as a civil litigator, the most important lesson that I learned back then was to think like a Judge when acting as an Advocate...to get inside the Judge's head, gameplan a winning scenario, and present my case accordingly.

Allan Goodman's seminal work ostensibly is a handbook for novice Mediators, providing checklists, advice and guidance for the newly minted specialist in Alternative Disputes Resolution. As a practical matter, it is an indispensible tool for any advocate - lawyer or lay - in planning a successful Mediation and avoiding an expensive, lengthy courtroom battle. Judge Goodman provides the requisite virtual roadmap through any Mediator's head.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, December 8, 2006
If you want to be a mediator, you will have to take an exhausting training in just about any jurisdiction. You will be required to take at least 40 hours of training. In fact, before beginning the training, my best advice for you is to get a copy of this book, which can be read in four hours or less, and I am positively sure that you will have a considerable edge over your training classmates. They will all wonder if you came to the training with prior experience. Not only you will feel more confident in knowing the process, but you will also get good suggestions from the author as to how to conduct particular matters. I think that when you want to try something new, whatever it may be, e.g., table chess, judo, dog breeding, etc., you need a beginners guide and lots of advice from knowledgeable people. This is precisely what this book does with respect to mediation.

    Editorial Review

For every course in Special Education Law and Education Law, or as a perfect supplement to any Educational Administration course, Legal Aspects of Special Education was written by a practitioner to help teachers, administrators, and advocates understand special education law in everyday language– without excessive legalese or extraneous case law. Different in many ways from other special education law texts on the market, all of the elements of this text are intended to help its students obtain the most critical information about special education law and how it is applied in the real world. Some unique features include: a fascinating opening interview and then epilogue with Joe Ballard, a pioneer of the IDEA movement; a discussion of Response-to-Intervention (RTI) and the implication of IDEA 2004 for school districts; and a discussion of the history of special education and its link to the Civil Rights Movement. Additionally, the book provides case studies and application questions, critical thinking questions, the most current information on the laws including No Child Left Behind and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004, and a discussion of major trends changing the laws, including that of autism.
