    5-0 out of 5 stars This book isn't a purchase, it's an investment, June 19, 2000
I have been meaning to write a review for this book for quite awhile, but when I found myself turning to it (yet again) last week after receiving a difficult diagnosis for my beloved geriatric dog, I thought it was time to sit down and express my appreciation for this book.

I am not fond of reviews that insist I "must! " have this or that, so please forgive me if I sound strident in my insistence that this really "should! " be in the possession of everyone who has a dog to care for. Here lies information that can help you out of the trenches and decide when you should wake up your vet in the middle of the night, when to wait till morning, and when to try handling things yourself. This is also the place where I learned how to monitor my pets vitals so I can get an idea of what may be going on and to provide my vet with some of the information needed to hit the ground running. Out of the several pet care books I have (Pitcairn's being one of them) THIS is the book that I grab first and it's the one my neighbors come over to examine when thier dog seems "off" and the one my family calls and asks me to read parts of over the phone (I will share this book, but I won't loan it). I wish they'd all get thier own copy, but at least one of us has it on hand.

As someone who has four large, geriatric dogs I love dearly, I wouldn't be without this book. Plenty of other books are going to provide you with glossy color photos and generic information, but when you need information--real, solid stuff you can leave teethmarks in, this book is what you need. General care and functioning is covered very well, but this volume really shines when things seem serious, even scary and it fleshes out those pre- and post-vet questions like no other.

PS--Pitcairn's book, which I mentioned in passing, is a nice general resource that is especially helpful for those interested in learning about feeding thier pets natural, whole-food diets. I like my copy quite a bit, but I can best describe it by saying I'll loan that book to a friend for a week or so, not so with Home Veterinary Handbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you own dogs, you should own this book!, December 23, 1999
This is by far the best health care guide for dogs. From the quick index of symptoms on the inside cover, to the great coverage of many diseases and disorders in canines, this is a well-written and easy to understand book, that goes beyond the basics most dog care books give you, without becoming too technical. My vet actually kept one on hand in his office for quick reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A money-saver for the conscientious dog owner, January 7, 1998
One of the most difficult tasks for the loving dog owner is deciding when a malady needs a vet's attention. This book helps to make this task easier. As a multiple big dog owner, I can't afford to run to the vet every time one of my dogs is not feeling his or her best. This book allows me to research a malady to help make the important decision: does my dog need to see a vet? This saves me money and gives me peace of mind. It also gives me the information I need to have an educated conversation with my vet about treatments, when and if they are necessary. It's like having an assistant on call 24 x 7.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peace of mind for all dog owners!, November 6, 1999
This book pays for itself 1000 times over! It gives the dog owner peace of mind and also saves thousands of dollars on costly, unecessary trips to the vet. An excellent source of information!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is literally a dog "life saver"!! A *must have*..., September 16, 1999
I show and occasionally breed dogs. This book was given to me as a gift a year ago and in that short time it has already *saved* the life of a puppy, correctly diagnosed dog's ailments/problems and given detailed instructions on how to treat them, and was a great tool in preparing for and whelping our last show litter. Beginners can learn so much from this book as well as being an excellent reference for the more "seasoned" dog fancier too. The authors have that special feel for the dog as not only DVM's, but as avid dog lovers, exhibitors and breeders as well. HIGHLY reccomended as a **MUST HAVE** for any dog owner!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for wolf and wolfdog owners, November 16, 2000
I have been an owner/breeder of wolves and wolfdogs for almost 20 years. Since many veterinarians will not examine or treat wolves, we who own them must learn how to treat them ourselves. This book has taught me more than all my other veterinary books combined. It has saved the lives of several of my animals, plus saved me 1000's of dollars in vet bills. I have bought several copies to share with friends and relatives, and for years I made my customers buy a copy before I would sell them a puppy! It is by far the best book in my vast collection of dog and wolf books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-have book for every dog owner, December 18, 1999
Dr. Giffin has done it again with this updated version of his original best-seller. This book clearly explains the symptoms of canine illnesses in a user-friendly, understandable, and organized fashion. No other book compares in terms of its comprehensiveness, readibility, and authority. This book will make an excellent gift for anyone who has a dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Dog Owner!, June 16, 2000
Believe it or not I actually used this book the first day I received it. My huskie cut his foot and the first aid treatment was at my finger tips! The book contains symptoms, diagnosis and especially informs the owner when a vet visit or emergency visit is required. Every dog owner should have this book on hand for emergencies, symptoms and treatment to take appropriate action for the benefit and health of their beloved pet. The same as having a first aid book for the human side!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for every dog lover..., January 3, 2004
Once in a while a book comes along which in the field of practical applications... is a real treasure. This is one of those books. Full of photos and easy to read text, not to mention helpful advice, "this is it"-- for the dog owner who really cares. It will not turn you completely from being independent of your vet, but it will help in determining which symptoms and cases where you would just have to run to him. For example, in the section "Intestines", it describes the most common irregularities, like diarrhea, the color, consistency, odor, frequency, condition of dog, common causes, and finally the treatment section. And it does not stop there. It will then give related problems about the intestines, from malabsorption syndromes to colitis, obstructions, constipation, voluntary retention, mechanical blockage, damaged nerves, flatulence and coprophagia (yeech!), et.al. And that is just a section, as I said, under Intestines. Whether you have one dog, or several kennels, professional breeder, backyard breeder, or no breeder at all, and just interested in the well-being of man's best friend, it will turn you from a feeling of uncertainty into a confident owner. It's the "leash" you can do.

This revised and expanded edition is one of my prime sources of information regarding the health of my dogs. It will save the owner, as it has saved me from needless worries, (or make it worse, depending really on the personality of the owner), and a lot of expenses. Read it, you'll like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I COULD NOT SLEEP AT NIGHT WITHOUT THIS BOOK!, September 7, 2001
I have three wonderful incredible dogs that I share my life with. All three were rescued from various shelters and adoption centers. They have had an assortment of health problems and issues to deal with. This book has accurately described every single problem we've run across including hip displaysia, entropion, rain rot, and "sometimes dogs just sneeze" as my husband tries to tell me. If you have a dog you care about at all, you must own this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good comprehensive coverage, but needs improvement, July 25, 2005
We have been using the previous editions of "The Merck Veterinary Manual "for many years in our practice. We used the 8th edition of the book to prepare for the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) also, and was very helpful for the same.

    Pros
On a day-to-day practice basis, it provides all essential information, and serves as a ready reference book. Extensive coverage on the vast Veterinary topics in a comprehensive manner is the hallmark of the book. The price hike for the new edition seems reasonable. As different from the previous edition, the 9th edition has more pages devoted for Exotic animals, which I consider a welcome move since it is a fast developing Veterinary practice area. Likewise more pages are devoted for Toxicology, which also finds lot of applications in practice. More information is provided on some emerging diseases. We are still browsing through pages to find out other new additions.

    Cones
Some very essential pictures, for example on ECG, Hematology etc. could have been included, instead of describing pages on these topics. Some more coverage on X-rays, it's interpretation are essential. This could be done in the on-line version of the book at least. Some more tables meant for ready reference in emergency medicine could have been included. The on-line version of the book seems not updated yet to the 9th edition.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Like having a veterinarian on your farm everyday... 24/7 - 365, August 24, 2005
To be without the Merck Manual is to be unequipped for life with livestock. Be sure to get the latest edition as medical technology and advances occur and you can be abreast of them, along with your veterinarian.
Written so that the lay person can understand, this tome is without a doubt a life-saver!

5-0 out of 5 stars the book on every vet's bookshelf, November 20, 2008
This is the reference guide that most every veterinarian has on his or her bookshelf. It includes vital basic information regarding the health for a number of species. My practice is limited to small animal internal medicine, so it sure is nice to have this book handy when I need to look something up pertaining to my goats or horses. This book has been a consistent seller for decades- that alone is evidence of its usefulness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy Manual, February 11, 2007
If you have pets or livestock- then this book >may< be quite handy. I have used it several times to help with ailments, drug use, etc however- this is NOT a book meant to replace your own veterinarian. Don't even think it will. People who graduate vet school are trained professionals, the rest of us on the farm might have practical experience- and that is just one small part of animal health.

I am happy with mine- having a medical background helps in reading this as it is not meant for the lay reader. Would I buy it again, yes. Would I recommend it to the farmer down the road? No.

5-0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Help for the Non-Veterinarian, August 18, 2006
This reference book is excellent for people with some knowledge
of medical care (I am a nurse). I always use the Merck Manual
for human info, but as a first-time dog owner who has a dog with
a few problems, I asked our vet if such a book existed for
veterinary issues. I was delighted when he told me that yes,
there is a Merck Veterinary Manual! The non-science minded
person might find the terminology daunting. The other book I
bought at the same time was
"The Five Minute Veterinary Consult", and I find that the two
books together give me all that I need in answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vet School Bible, February 27, 2006
This is a book I would recommend to any vet school student. It will help you with diagnostic procedures, rule outs, and even help you review for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Merck Veterianry Manual, August 23, 2007
As a medical professional, farm owner and provider of care for horses, dogs and cats, I have found this manual helpful. It provides clear information for the reader who has at least some knowledge of medical and veterianry vocabulary.
A copy of this important book should be on the shelf of every farm and livestock owner.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Merck, September 5, 2005
Excellent manual. Comprehensive and has great index for finding topics. Recommended for all farmers, ranchers, vets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Merck Veterinary Manual, September 24, 2008
This book is meant for professionals working with many different types of animals. It contains a wealth of information which, although I am simply a dog owner, I have used in caring for my pets. However, a book meant for lay people that is easier to read and use might have been a wiser choice for me.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it., December 1, 2007
For the price you pay, you can't get more information anywhere else. Even though this info is all available online for free, it's so much easier to have the book in front of you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for better diet and health of dogs and cats!, February 4, 2006
You may see some of my other reviews about human health and nutrition, but this is perhaps THE book that prompted me to learn more about MY diet.

Here's what I liked about the book:

Dr. Pitcairn has a long career in the vetinarian industry. I enjoyed reading about his holistic approach to pet health and diet--treating the root cause, not the symptoms. I like the fact that Dr. Pitcairn chose to think outside the box, so to speak, and look for alternatives early in his career when he found that his patients did not always respond to drugs. Also, the recipes are excellent for ensuring a truly healthy diet.

I can't think of anything that I did not like about the book.

    My story:

I still remember the first time anyone had EVER mentioned to me that dog food is not good for dogs. My husband and I were adding a dog to our family and was going through an interview process with the breeder. She knew that we already have an older dog and she ask about his diet. This was two years ago, and by then, our older dog (11 years old at the time) had lost most of his teeth, and we had (reluctantly) taken him off his kibble diet. When we started feeding him more "table scraps" we noticed some incredible improvements. His coat looked better than it had in his 11 years, he was also very "peppy" and seemed to be overall in great health and spirits. All during his life he had ALWAYS suffered from weird ailments like skin disorders, hot spots, clogged anal glands, dry flaky skin, nasal allergies, etc. I can not count how many times this dog had been on drugs like cortisone and prednisone and bathed in "hypo-allergenic oatmeal-based shampoos". During my interview with this dog breeder, I did not share with her what my dog had been through, I just said, "...he has lost most of his teeth, and no longer eats kibble". This is when she told me that I shouldn't feed him kibble, and I should not feed the new little one kibble either!

This got me curious and I started doing my own research about dog food and was absolutely HORRIFIED to learn the ingredients used to make dog food. How can an entire industry (vetinarians) give such harmful advise?!?! I was and still am outraged at all the people along the way who always advised me to keep my dog on kibble. And I had heard it from so many sources for so many years that I figured they must be right! The day I learned what kibble has in it, my husband and I started cooking for our dogs. There's been some ups and downs during the last two years, learning what to feed and what not to feed, but overall I believe that both dogs are much healthier and my husband and I definately have peace of mind knowing exactly what they are eating! Oh, and all those skin ailments and allergies that the older dog suffered from for 11 years?...not a SINGLE episode in the past two years!

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding what dogs need to be healthy. I learned that generally speaking, we were doing most things right. We did make some changes in the supplements based on Dr. Pitcairn's recommendations and we replaced the white rice we had been feeding with oatmeal--which both dogs seem to like. But overall, a lot of his recommendations were very similar to the advise we received from the breeder.

The older dog is now 13 years old and was diagnosed with Inflammatory Brain Disease about 2 months ago. We are obviously very devastated and I believe whole-heartedly that this brain disease was brought on by the poor diet and also the "top-spot" flea poison he had been on all his life. I found out AFTER his diagnosis that top-spot has been linked to this disease...as this is the same way the poison kills the fleas--it attacks their nervous system!--we had treated him with Frontline just four days before he became ill and was carried to UC Davis Vetinary Teaching Hospital.

Whether you decide to buy this book or not, I strongly advise you to do your own research about your pet's diet and decide for yourself. Some would say that cooking/preparing meals for their pets is a hassle, but this is the least you can do for all the benefits you will get from your healthier pet--not to mention the money you'll save from not taking your dog to the vet all the time to treat symptoms of a poor diet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from Kim Bloomer, Owner of Aspenbloom Pet Care, August 22, 2005
I recently obtained Dr. Pitcairn's book and found it to be a wonderful, easy to implement and understand book on natural care for dogs and cats. Dr. Pitcairn provides concise information on dogs and cats from what to feed, to training, and even about how to choose a dog breed for your lifestyle. This book also has lots of natural prevention remedies included and how to PREVENT pesky problems like fleas and ticks from invading your home and your pets.

One of the things I educate pet owners on is prevention being the key and that is done through a strong immune system by feeding and supplementing properly. I always tell them that once your pet is diseased you'll need to see a veterinarian and then undo the illness and disease if you can, then build your pet back up. Dr. Pitcairn shares a lot about prevention and that thrilled me! That is the answer and key to keeping our pets healthy.

He shares about natural feeding which is another big issue I like to tackle with pet owners. He even includes grooming. This is a must have book for any dog or cat owner who wants to approach their pet care naturally and preventatively. Excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive on diet & health, May 4, 2006
I'd reviewed the 2nd edition version when I was looking into a more natural diet for my puppies on the advice of my holistic vet. In fact I was using the diet until my youngest started gaining weight and they were worried that the grains were causing the weight gain. I switched to raw meat and pureed veggies instead. Turns out that she was low thyroid.

The diets are still heavy on grains. Great for the majority of dogs I'm sure. The upside is that there are nutritional analysis of all the diets included so you know why you're including each of the components. There are also special diets included for allergies, weight loss and gain.

I also like the information on various health issues and vaccinosis that is included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple to understand - Good Recipes, January 2, 2006
I bought this book because I wanted to feed my dogs something other then commercial food. The nutritional information in the book is easy to understand and the recipes are simple to feed. When people express interest in feeding their dogs a natural diet I always suggest this book. I've read many books on this topic and this one is the best and most user friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Best Guide for Pet Health, February 27, 2007
This book is the ultimate guide to pet health. After owning a dog who struggled with frequent seizures and, near the end of her life, osteosarcoma, I am so thankful for the advice contained in _Dr. Pitcairn's Guide_.

My dog began to have seizures when she was about seven or eight years old. I was told by a veterinarian that she would have to take phenobarbitol, a seizure drug, for the rest of her life. After tests showed the drug was beginning to destroy her liver, I found a new vet and started looking for another way to treat her seizures. Not knowing what I was looking for, I picked up a copy of this book.

After several months of gradually introducing her to the diet described in this book, I was able to wean her off the phenobarbitol, which she never took again. Never before had I realized what a difference diet could make. Coincidentally, my new vet was a practicioner of homeopathy who had studied Dr. Pitcairn's methods, so things came together quite nicely.

Sadly, at the age of fourteen, my dog developed osteosarcoma, a deadly bone cancer. Again, I always kept this book nearby as a reference until the end of her life, forgoing chemotherapy in favor of less harsh care.

I have never seen a more comprehensive book for pet health with so much effective, practical advice. In addition to recommendations for diet (including recipes), this book also contains a quick reference to different disorders, and the recommended treatments for each. Its main focus, however, is on prevention.

One important note: If you have an older edition of this book, please buy the new one as some important revisions have been made.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A great followup to a ground-breaking book, August 22, 2005
As a fellow veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) this book is one of my all-time favorites! This third edition includes updated information on herbs, homeopathics, and diet. Dr. Pitcairn has retired from his homeopathic practice, but generously shares his years of experience with his readers in this easy and fun to read book. Another winner from a wonderful writer and doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars for the love of your CAT or dog, February 21, 2006
I bought this book to learn more info. on how to care for my aging cat. It has a lot of info about dogs that I don't need but it has enough about cats to warrent buying. I love the many recipes for cats. Since Dr. Pitcairn is a vet. doctor he gives a lot of sound herbal and homeopathic medical advice also. If your a catlover a great companion book is "the natural cat by Anita Frazier." I consult both when trying to cure a cat problem. In Frazier's book she gave a safe herbal treatment to cure earmites from Dr. Pitcairn and it worked! I once tried a commercial product that ate away at my cats ears and did not work! This book informs the reader so we are not at the mercy of the vet. We can make educated decisions along with the vet. or at home to help our furry friends. My cat's Dr. reccommended dry Science Diet RD to help her lose weight. She did not lose an ounce. Then a homeopathic vet. gave me free advice over the phone about how to feed my cat raw chicken and stop the dry food to lose weight. She lost weight at 15 years old. Now I feed her raw chicken, veggie's, pumpkin, and olive oil. This book is especially useful for the person who cannot afford a homeopathic vet. or their is not one in their area.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST dog nutrition resource I have found., April 3, 2007
I own ten dogs and take their individual health very seriously. Once I decided to get my dogs off of commercial food I went to the internet for some education. I found a lot of useful information but many contradictions as well. One common thread was that Dr. Pitcairn`s name came up at every source. This book is easy to read, well planned, and extremely informative. Whether you have a tiny toy dog or a pack of huskies you NEED this book. My dogs have no more allergies, their coats look great, and we are improving on keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Another benefit, once you learn how to feed your dog you`ll start eating better yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love your pet!, April 10, 2007
I actually own the 1995 version of "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide..." and will be buying this version for sure. My copy is a ruined mess from much use. If you love your cats and have the means, make their food. I've raised five kittens using his recipes and the healthy powder and they've grown to be the sweetest, fluffiest, happiest cats. They have no dandruff, their coats are shiny and not greasy, their breath actually smells good (I supplement by constantly growing wheatgrass for them to munch on as well - that helps with healthy gums and teeth), and they're energetic and affectionate. What I do is make the Cat Growth recipe but quadruple the recipe, dish it out into little pyrex containers and freeze it. I also double the healthy powder mix (I get the ingredients at the Vitamin Shoppe) and store it in a big pyrex in the fridge and that lasts for months. Did I also mention that my cats LOVE this food? It's also a relief not having to worry about pet food recalls -- my heart goes out to anyone and their pets who were affected. Seriously, though, a few hours a month and a bunch of pyrex containers is all it takes to make healthy food for your pet.
Addendum 4/24/07: I ran out of homemade food and switched them to high quality dry food a couple of days ago and all of a sudden their p**p smells really bad and there was..sorry, this is gross...vomit all over the floor this morning. Guess I better whip up another batch of Pitcairn food STAT!! Anyone have similar experiences? Addendum 6/20/2007: made a huge batch of cat growth diet with about 9 lbs meat. No more vomit, and the poop is back to being almost pleasant smelling. : )

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed - Too complicated and simply not backed up by evidence, June 12, 2008
Given the number of positive reviews on this book, I was expecting alot. unfortunately, this book didn't fulfill my most basic expectations.

Compared to what most people know and the way most people raise their dogs, the method explained in this book is orders of magnitude better in terms of healthfulness. The author is clearly trying to create an optimal nutrition profile for animals, and he hits on alot of very important points, but unfortunately falls short in the most important dimension of all: credibility.

Even though I was ready to trust the author (vetenarian, PhD), I was expecting at least a nominal level of backup for his arguments, but it really seems almost everything in his book is based on his subjective feeling about it. Not only is here clearly hypothesizing theories out of thin air at times, he comes up with the most detailed nutrition, supplement, and feeding "recipes" based on the most vague and unsupported justifications. This is important to me, as a person pursuing a graduate degree in biology I came ready to critically analyze every word of this book, but there really is not much substance behind the verbal "fluff."

Some of Dr. Pitcairn's suggestions are not in line with nutritional advice i've heard from in my mind more respected sources (famous breeders of show quality dogs): to feed a diet of raw meaty bones (RMBs) while minimizing or eliminating grain. Pitcairn asserts that in his opinion, dogs need grain, but doesnt really back it up. Other sources also say dogs dont need that much in the way of supplementation, but Pitcairn would have me spend more on my dogs vitamins than my own. No real evidence, no biological mechanism proposed, rather simplistic.

For most, an excellent introduction to many aspects of dog training. For those looking for a quality, authoritative work on canine nutrition, look elsewhere. ... Read more

"A very warm, very engaging read. . . . The reader falls totally under his spell."
    --Associated Press

The second volume in the multimillion copy bestselling series

Millions of readers have delighted in the wonderful storytelling and everyday miracles of James Herriot in the over thirty years since his delightful animal stories were first introduced to the world.

Now in a new edition for the first time in a decade, All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants---both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine out as we laugh, cry, and delight in his portraits of his many, varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

"Humor, realism, sensitivity, earthiness; animals comic and tragic; and people droll, pathetic, courageous, eccentric---all of whom he views with the same gentle compassion and a lively sense of the sad, the ridiculous, and the admirable."

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute delight!, August 9, 2005
I read all of the 4 Herriot books when I was in high school, but I find I'm getting so much more out of them as an adult. Mr. Herriot is a delightful companion to take along on an overseas flight, but you should be prepared to explain to your seatmates why you are laughing so hard that tears are streaming down your face!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book assignment on a great book!, October 30, 2001
This is a really great book and the only biography I've really ever liked. It's about a guy (James Herriot) who is a country vet. This has stories about his work at a pet show, him when he's trying to court his future wife, and it has a lot about the personalities of the animals he treated. It also has a lot of his blunders, like when he got drunk (accidentally, I think) and went out to a farm. The people there were really religious, and he found out the next day the despised drinking! He didn't go out there again. All in all, it was a really good book, and I recommend it for any animal lovers or future vets out there.

This book truely reflects the escents of being a country vet on the Yorkshire Dales. It really captivates you and takes you on a journey to the town of Darrowby and surrounds you in the rich atmoshere. I have never been there myself but I feel as if I've lived there my whole life! This is a truly amazimg book I know that anyone who has read it would definetly agree that this book deserves my rating of five stars. James Harriot is most definetly the best author I have ever read!

Is there anyone who read ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL and who didn't rush right out and buy this one next? I didn't think so. I gave the first one a rave review, and rightfully so, but somehow I don't recall enjoying it as much as I did this one. He's an amazing talent on so many levels. Read the real reviews by the real reviewers. They're all true. This man lived in the moment, and he enjoyed all in life that is enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life., March 5, 2001
All Things Bright and Beautiful is a fantastic book that had a curious effect on the direction of my life. This sequel to Herriot's best-selling "All Creatures Great and Small" continues the true, autobiographical adventures of the author as an English countryside veterinarian. I had just read his first book and dove right into this second one, absolutely convinced as a teenager that veterinary medicine was my destiny. But by the end of this second book, Herriot helped me realize that while I loved animals, I wouldn't be happy as a vet. The odd hours, inevitable disappointments, and requirement to frequently and literally go elbow deep into places I'd rather not, caused the realization that petting a warm and fuzzy pet and fixing a sick and slimy farm animal are two entirely different propositions. One measure of a book's merit is its power to change lives. This one has such power, for which I'm eternally grateful. -- Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of Wake Up Dead and owner of 3 cats, 2 dogs, and 2 horses.

4-0 out of 5 stars James Herriot - an Amusing Storyteller, February 20, 2004
James Herriot Describing Himself in All Things Bright and Beautiful
In the novel All Things Bright and Beautiful, the author James Herriot is using his experiences as a veterinarian in Scotland to make an indirect characterization of himself. Reading the book, we get the picture of James Herriot as being a person who simply loves life because of the small things that happen in it whether they happen when he visits the farms in the country, goes and gets drunk in a pub, or has to get up in the middle of the night because of his job. Due to his amusing and joyful way of describing what he sees and does, we get encouraged to love life as much as James Herriot loves it himself. The way he indirectly describes himself makes the novel a joy to read.
We are not supposed to learn the lessons of life when reading this novel; we are supposed to enjoy James Herriot as a fantastic storyteller and get inspired to enjoy the small though extraordinary things in life that happen every day. The indirect characterization of James Herriot is what makes us realize that. We get inspired by his personality and his actions. James Herriot has put his personality onto every page of the book, and it is his personality that shapes the novel and makes it as good and amusing as it is. James Herriot has not written this novel because he had to; he has written it because he wanted to, and his love of writing about a topic as banal as his own life makes this novel a positively different and extraordinary piece of literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and charming..., June 30, 2008
All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot is a true classic and I can see why it has been such a big seller through many decades. Sadly, I missed seeing his books when they were made into a television series. This autobiographical work is charming and delightful.

Jim Herriot was a vet in Yorkshire, England. He was pretty much a country veterinarian, servicing farm animals for most of his years. He began his career when the practice of being a vet was pretty much in the dark ages. Antibiotics were not yet on the horizon and many of today's vaccines weren't invented. Each chapter is a story about a different experience--birthing a lamb, caring for injured animals, judging a favorite pet contest, tasting homemade wine, etc. Through them all, we get to sense Jim's love for his job, his patients, and the simple but grateful folk he came in contact with every day. Many times, being a vet was also to be a detective. He often had to come up with a diagnosis for a mystery ailment, and he had to deal with everything from copper deficiencies to hairballs. As in life, not all of his stories have happy endings.

I am happy to have finally acquainted myself with James Herriot and will definitely read more of his books. I have already started James Herriot's Dog Stories.

    Editorial Review

"Quite simply this is an excellent book. It is well-written, with snatches of dry humour. It should be mandatory reading for anybody who keeps a dog or has intentions of so doing." —R. W. F. Poole, Daily Telegraph

How do dogs perceive the world about them? How do they see, hear, learn, relate to their owners? How large are their brains, what is their emotional makeup? Why do they suffer from stress and how can it be coped with? Over the last few years a substantial body of knowledge has been built up about the psychology of dog behavior. Combining more than twenty years of practical experience as a veterinary clinician with a personal knowledge and understanding of the latest international research, Dr. Bruce Fogle has written the most inclusive and relevant book on how the canine mind works. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on dog behavior, May 6, 2006
This book is an excellent guide to dog behavior and, although not being a training manual, it includes a lot of information on how to train your dog. Apart from discussing how dogs learn (e.g. by observation, classical conditioning, or operant conditioning), it includes a short list of "canine learning" rules and an appendix that teaches you how to teach commands, as well as how to correct behavior problems by counter-conditioning (training him to do something else instead of its undesirable behavior) and desensitization (teaching him to accept the stimuli that cause unacceptable behavior).

The first part of the book covers material on dogs anatomy and physiology, including their genetic background (that of wolves), their brain characteristics and hormonal system, their senses (that might include a sixth sense), and the basics of their communication system. The latest part is essential to understand and properly interpret your dog's gestures and the sounds he emits in different situations.

The second part, on dog psychology, is, in my opinion, the really interesting part of this book. It describes how dogs develop their "personality" traits, how the learn, and how they behave as social animals. Many aspects of dog behavior are clearly explained, from their fears and phobias (and how to treat them) to their innate habits. Breed differences are also discussed, as well as how to deal with behavior problems (e.g. aggressions or house training).

I cannot but recommend this book to anyone who lives with dogs. There are similar books with a less formal style (as Patricia McConnell's "The Other End of the Leash"), but they are not as thorough nor as informative as this book is. It should be noted that, despite its undeniable scientific rigor, "The Dog's Mind" is far from boring. It is quite easy to read and even momentarily humorous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great behavior guide, June 6, 2004
This is NOT a training manual, this is a dog behavior manual. It teaches you how to read and understand your dogs behavior and why he does the things he does. This is very understandable and enjoyable to read. Bruce Fogle gives lots of in depth information on genetics and how early learning can effect your dog. This is very scientific, and not necessarily an "easy" read. Some of the information can take a while to digest. This isn't a book you can read in two evenings. Bruce Fogle is very articulate and well read, and knows what he is talking about.

I recommend this book to anyone who owns a dog, whether or not the plan on professionally training them or not. It has new information for even some of the most knowledgable people.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book on dogs and how their 'thoughts' develop, September 29, 2004
the book starts with a brief history on the dogs' origin. followed by a pretty good description of the anatomy of the dog's brains and their 5 (or 6, as many think dogs may have the 6th sense) senses.

these are written and brief and easily understood language. not boring scientific stuff.

from the set up of the brain, the book flows into how the brain would produce the hormones that determine the dog's behaviours. from here, the author would branch out to tell in detail the psychology and behaviourial issues, explaining many things based on scientific reserach and analysis.

the author also touches on some common behavioural issues. like humping, agression etc. also incl are tips on how to curb some of these problems. another very interesting topic the author deals with that is not found in many books is the effect of de-sexing dogs. he deals with this issue very comprehensively and it's very interesting to be able to learn.

a very good book to fully understand our best friend. it's a must all all serious dog owners who like to fully understand our best friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading, June 29, 2003
I have been a police officer for about 13 years and have always been fascinated with police service dogs. About 4 years ago I became actively involved as a K-9 officer. I purchased a German Shepherd dog from the Czech Republic and trained him as a dual purpose patrol/narcotic dog. I can't count the number of books I have read or the number of videos I have watched related to dogs and their training. A friend of mine suggested "A Dog's Mind". As other reviews said this is not neccessarily a training manual but it gives a great insight into just how the dog's mind works and how the dog relates to his surroundings. Should I ever have the opportunity to supervise a K-9 unit I would make this book required reading for all K-9 handlers. I highly recommend this book to any and all who work with service animals and to those who just want to better understand why Fido barks at the mailman or eats your shoes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly The Best Dog Book, March 19, 2001
I have owned this book for over three years now and still think it is the best dog training/understanding book that I have ever seen. As a trainer of shelter animals and owner of 4 dogs I have seen almost every kind of "bad dog". Before getting this book I trained using the "commercially" prescribed techniques without a true understanding of the motivation behind the dog's behavior. After reading this book, I was able to develop my own methods tailored to each dog and have had great success. I would love to see every dog owner in the U.S. have a copy of this book as it would prevent a lot of animal abuse and neglect currently present here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before training your dog, take the time to read this book!, November 6, 2000
As a dog owner and scientist, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I believe that many can benefit from the information included by this author. By going through the mechanics and function of the brain (most specifically a dog's) , I am better able to interpret my animals' behavior (good and not-good). I found the discussion of the dog's senses intriguing and enlightening. Furthermore, if during training you have ever wondered "why am I not getting through... this is soooo simple" or "why isn't he/she getting this", then I think that you will find an answer in the study of animal behavior. I hope someday to breed and professionally train dogs, and so the information on puppys' physiological and social/psychological development will come in very useful. If anything, I have learned how important early sensory stimulation on animals can be -- basically, how it can lead to a well-adjusted temperment. However -- buyers note: this is NOT a how-to dog train in "twelve easy steps" or in "5 days!" That is OK... it is not meant to be. I believe that dog owners and handlers should read such books as part of the overall training process. In my opinion, the best obedience training involves both the dog AND human learning. If you too believe that, then read this book -- it will give you a great start towards a successful relationship with your dog!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book prevents new training mistakes and fixes old ones., January 1, 1999
Through excellent illustrations and explanations this book allows you to understand what your dog is telling you even in complex situations. It provides step by step methods for dealing with behavior that other authors wouldn't begin to try to tackle. By applying the advice and enlightment gained from this book, we immediately noticed improvement in our dog's behavior - this guy knows what he is talking about. After reading this book, you will feel like a lot of things have fallen into place, even if you have a lot of experience with dogs. This book pulls it all together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful But Dated, January 15, 2006
Fogle has taken a fairly typical approach to this topic. He starts with a thorough review of literature on canine senses and builds to a discussion of how dogs use these sometimes far inferior senses (like close vision) and sometimes far superior senses (like sense of smell) in communication and learning. He discusses the various ways dogs learn including observation, classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and what types of reinforcement and punishment works best. There is an interesting discussion of puppy personality testing, including, something I wasn't aware of, what it may be able to can tell you and, even more importantly, what it can't tell you.

He provides some great material on puppy's early learning from fellow siblings and from Mom with emphasis on its importance and the potential for problems if this critical early learning doesn't happen at all or at the proper time in the short puppy stage of the life. Before he finishes, Fogle wraps up with a discussion of how these senses change as dogs age.

There are many books on the market that cover much of the same material, but Fogle distinguishes himself in two sections. One is a useful discussion of how to deal with the different types of canine aggression which he discusses in some detail. This section is a great place to start if you ever have to face that problem. Second, he gives us an equally thorough treatment of canine social and eating disorders as well as fears, phobias, and anxiety.

The book concludes with a brief appendix (almost a checklist really) summarizing basic skills training Fogle advises to always train these behaviors in the following order: come, sit, stay, down, and down-stay. It's disappointing that this recommended training sequence does not match their sequence in the appendix. And to make it even easier to miss, this advice is hidden back on page 110. As a result, we're left wondering whether the sequence is important, and, if so, why.

Major Author's Message: When we breed for show we bring unanticipated and undesirable traits along for the ride.

Minor Author's message: A dog doesn't expect democracy or equality because neither concept exists in the pack world. He doesn't expect to be treated like a human. Instead, he is more likely to expect his people to act like dogs.

Bottom line: I enjoyed the book; it's written well and there is definite value there for those who are willing to seek it. But if you're not seeking info on the two distinguishing section listed above, there are other places to get it such as Stanley Coren's "How Dogs Think" which is probably easier to locate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, February 1, 2000
A friend was having trouble with her dog, I was able to get out my "Understanding Your Dog's Behavior" book and diagnose the problem and how to fix it. I really like the section on separation anxiety. One thing that Fogle says many times through the book is that "your dog is learning even though you are not teaching". We may be thinking we are training our dogs one thing but may be reinforcing something else (a negative action) and not even realize it. (I guess the same goes for children!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly miraculous book which demystifys dog behavior, August 25, 1999
This book is clearly and intelligently written. It provides absolutely fascinating insight on a dog's motivation and instinctive behaviors. 5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed information, April 21, 2000
I find this to be the most detailed veterinary guide, short of buying a veterinary encyclopedia. Of the several I own, most are very general and have a lot of "ask you veterinarian for a course of action." This one tells you the most common treatments so you know what to expect. I go back to my dog-eared copy all the time. As I back-yard breeder, I like Giffin's veterinary breeder's guide, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Equine Health Care Reference, August 11, 2002
As a first-horse owner, this text was a whole lot more than I needed or wanted to know. For the horse owner who is serious about learning as much as possible about health care problems and how to treat these problems themselves, the book is a winner and probably unique. However, for someone who likes to rely on his/her vet for anything more than the usual maintenance procedures (deworming, treating minor cuts, etc.) and doesn't foresee giving his/her horse injections and the like or treating fairly serious illnesses, a less complete book would be sufficient and much less daunting. Probably an excellent reference for students of equine health and for those who would like to become vets themselves one day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent health reference, September 3, 2005
I have several books in my library which cover equine health but this is certainly the most comprehensive. The book is set out in chapters which cover the major systems of the horse - respiratory, circulatory, nervous, reproductive etc

Each chapter then starts with a complete explaination of that system and follows with an alphabetic listing of the problems or diseases.

There are plenty of clear photos and diagrams and there are two further indexes to help you to find what you are looking for or to cross-reference information. I would certainly recommend this as the book to get, especially if you can only afford to get one health reference book.

This book is awesome. I knew nothing about my horse but now I just go to the part of the body with the problem like leg and then read all about all of the leg issues and I can determine somewhat what i think she has and call the vet if I need to. Sometimes it is just a minor thing and the book tells you how to solve it in simple ways. I think everyone should have one of these and I love mine. I was calling the vet everyday and now I can treat her myself and call only when I have to!!

This Handbook is quick and easy to use. Packed with symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, its index and contents help horse owners to quickly locate information when its needed most. Although the book only has black and white photos, they clearly demonstrate how tos, anatomy, and display common physically symptoms. The book also has charts and diagrams on every day equine topics such as worms and necessary vaccines. The last few chapters are designated to reproduction and are equipped with useful information for an owner thinking about breeding.

This is required reading for every horse owner. It helps determine whether or not you need to call the vet out for a medical problem.

It’s 2:47 a.m. when Dr. Nick Trout takes the phone call that starts another hectic day at the Angell Animal Medical Center. Sage, a ten-year old German shepherd, will die without emergency surgery for a serious stomach condition. Over the next twenty-four hours Dr. Trout fights for Sage’s life, battles disease in the operating room, unravels tricky diagnoses, reassures frantic pet parents, and reflects on the humor, heartache, and inspiration in his life as an animal surgeon. And he wants to take you along for the ride.…

From the front lines of modern medicine, Tell Me Where It Hurts is a fascinating insider portrait of a veterinarian, his furry patients, and the blend of old-fashioned instincts and cutting-edge technology that defines pet care in the twenty-first century. For anyone who’s ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your veterinarian’s office, Tell Me Where It Hurts offers a vicarious journey through twenty-four intimate, eye-opening, heartrending hours at the premier Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.

You’ll learn about the amazing progress of modern animal medicine, where organ transplants, joint replacements, and state-of-the-art cancer treatments have become more and more common. With these technological advances come controversies and complexities that Dr. Trout thoughtfully explores, such as how long (and at what cost) treatments should be given, how the Internet has changed pet care, and the rise in cosmetic surgery.

You’ll also be inspired by the heartwarming stories of struggle and survival filling these pages. With a wry and winning tone, Dr. Trout offers up hilarious and delightful anecdotes about cuddly (or not-so-cuddly) pets and their variously zany, desperate, and demanding owners. In total, Tell Me Where It Hurts offers a fascinating portrait of the comedy and drama, complexities and rewards involved with loving and healing animals.

Part ER, part Dog Whisperer, and part House, this heartfelt and candid book shows that while the technology has changed since James Herriot’s day, the humanity and compassion remains unchanged. If you’ve ever had a pet or special place in your heart for furry friends, Dr. Trout’s irresistible book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empathetic and fascinating, March 21, 2008
Dr. Nick Trout is the vet you wish you had, calling your pet "sweetheart" and working with skill and compassion to keep your animal friend happy and healthy. He understands the intense depth of feeling that people can have for their pets. In Tell Me Where It Hurts, Trout tells fascinating stories from his quarter century of being an animal surgeon. The empathy he has for both animals and people spills from every page.

I'm a sucker for books about animals, especially from a veterinary point of view. I grew up devouring James Herriot's wonderful books (All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All and Every Living Thing).

Tell Me Where It Hurts is just as well-written and addictive as these classics. I forgot I was reading a book and felt immersed in the life of this caring doctor and the noble, funny animals he treats.

Along the way, Trout describes the amazing progress made in the past couple of decades in veterinary science. Procedures that used to be only for humans -- organ transplants, joint-replacements, chemotherapy, MRIs -- are now available options for animals. The costs can be incredible, and pet owners sometimes have hard choices on whether to proceed or not. Dr. Trout says he is ultimately always asked the same question: "And if she were your dog? What would you do?"

In the book Dr. Trout condenses his 25 years of veterinary practice into a single very busy day, which starts at 2:47 a.m. with an emergency wake-up call. A 10-year-old German Shepherd with a life-threatening stomach problem requires emergency surgery. Even with a stomach about to burst, the old dog wags her tail when they meet. The book ends late at night, at 10:02 p.m., with this same old dog.

    What a journey in between.

    5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! What a book!, March 18, 2008
This book was amazing...I started reading it, standing in Barnes and Nobel with a cup of coffee....I couldn't put it down and ended up buying it before the store closed....I laughed, I cried, but mostly some of the tales of profound love between humans and animals, gave me chills. Although there are many good animal books out there, this one was exceptional. It was incredibly well-written. If this author ever decides to become an award-winning novelist, he could do that...and perhaps he will, with this book! He captures the humor, pathos and all in-between of the human-animal bond. And, I might add, I usually avoid these books, because I hate the part where the pet dies etc. etc. but really, although there are sad passages in this, as would be expected in a vet hospital story, the main ingredient is the total celebration, awesome really, of the bond and great love between humans and their pets. Although there were many, one story that captured me was the man who loved his dog so much, that when the dog died the inevitable death of old age, the man took a photo of the dog, cut it out and wore it on a chain around his neck for a whole year, to keep the flame of love alive for his beloved dog. There are unforgettable characters in this book, human and animal.....and the writing is truly excellent. Wow, what a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Part Memoir; Part Critique of Veterinary Science and Completely Enjoyable, March 30, 2008
I grew up in the Boston area and actually remember my parents using Angell Hospital for a dog we owned that had been hit by a car. That was back in the mid 1960s and it was the place to go then, and apparently it is still the place to go if you need care that exceeds that of a local veterinarian.

Dr. Trout takes the reader on not only a tour of the hospital, by way of rounds and consultations, but also a tour of the owners of the pets involved and the feelings generated by pet lovers for their pets. During his examination he places, front and center, many of the issues in the industry today. How much are you willing to pay, how much are you able to pay, and what is really best for the animal? All three are distinct and separate questions that Trout feels people in the veterinary profession have to be aware of. And these are only three of the many he poses.

Dr. Trout exemplifies the type of surgeon you would want working to save your pets life and comes across as caring and involved. The book is emotional and I was laughing one moment and crying the next. I could and did sympathize with owners as well as with the pets and with the doctors involved. Whatever else this book does, it will make you think about a lot of things that need to be thought about. And it will entertain you along the way.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, March 11, 2008
I know I can't do this book justice with a simple review. I have spent the last 48 hours simultaneously laughing and crying as I flew through the 284 pages, completely unable to put the book down. A modern All Creatures Great and Small that is almost certain to similarly inspire the next generation of aspiring veterinary students, myself included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insiders view.........!!, March 21, 2008
As Katrin's husband it's been my pleasure to work on occasion with the author Dr Nick Trout for the past several years....so as you can imagine, I was awaiting the book with great anticipation.
    WOW!!
Like the previous reviewers I was unable to put the book down and read the whole thing faster than any other that I have had. I've been in general practice as a companion animal vet for 30 years now and Nick has ABSOLUTELY captured the emotions that flow on a daily basis through our places of work. I tried to read a section of the first chapter to my wife and sister in law and had to give up as I was choking up on the words, knowing as I did how the story would progress.
I can recommend this book to ALL pet owners as it will give them tremendous insight into the range of feelings that they will experience during their time with their beloved animals.

author of EVERY RESCUED DOG HAS A TALE: Stories from the Dog Rescue Railroad
When this book arrived in the mail, I had finished it within 48 hours. I could have done it sooner but I had to work one day. It is so interesting to see things from the vet's point of view. I have long wondered what our vet thinks of me and my husband when we bring Wookie in and fuss over every little ache and pain. Well he thinks he is the center of our world and he is right. These stories of the illnesses and injuries suffered by the animals in the book and everything has to be considered, such as how much can the owner afford - how far to go to extend the life of an old dog. Is it for the owner or for the animal? What will the quality of life be? I learned so much more about the veterinary profession than I ever knew. In high school I wanted to be a vet but at the time girls didnt have that option unless they were in the top one percent of their class. The free spirit in me kept me a little lower than that. Now female vets prevail in this country. He discuses the suicide rate among vets, which I never considered. Euthanasia is not an easy thing for any person involved.
If you love dogs, or have any pets at all, please read this book. It is hard to put down and you will have a whole new respect for people who choose this profession.

2-0 out of 5 stars No James Herriott, September 15, 2009
I, too, grew up reading James Herriott's novels --- all of them. I grabbed this book after reading the back which includes a quote, "Fabulous...the best veterinary book that's been written since All Creatures Great and Small." That's a mighty endorsement. One, unfortunately, that never holds up. James Herriott's books were full of warmth, even when the animal being seen didn't make it. You could feel the relationship between person and pet. This book is flat in comparison. The author begins well, but then can only ramble from one subject to another, waiting for pages and pages to give you the outcome. It's great if you're a vet in training. It goes into great detail about costs, women vets taking over the profession, clients with internet diagnoses..WAIT! But what about the dog? Can we just go BACK TO THE DOG? I'm sorely disappointed in this book. It promised more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pet Lovers Should Feel Right At Home Here, August 10, 2008
Nick Trout has written a charming "day in the life" account of being a surgeon in Boston's Angell veterinarian hospital. When I started I wondered if this was going to be nothing more than a serialized piece from Dog or Cat Fancy that had been expanded into book form, but my skepticism was quickly dispelled and I found myself charmed by both his sensitive and funny approach to both the pets and their owners. Anyone who owns and cherishes their pet would probably find alot to appreciate and identify with here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pleasure And Pain Of Mending Our Four-Legged Friends, June 27, 2008
This book makes me wish I had become a vet.

In "Tell Me Where It Hurts" Dr. Nick Trout explores the ups and downs of the life of a top tier veterinary surgeon. He compresses a lifetime of poignant, frequently funny, and sometimes heart rending experiences into a single exhausting day. I had thought about being a vet when I was young, and this book is closer than any other I have read to summarizing what the journey to skilled professional veterinarian is really like.

The book opens and closes with the story of "Sage", a German Shepard with a potentially life threatening stomach disorder. It is the perfect case to explain the uncertainties of the world of veterinary medicine, and ultimately serves to explain the trials and joys of the job. Along the way there are many detours, including sections on methods of veterinary training in different countries, the emotional tolls of the job, the changing demographics of the profession, and the increase in exotic animals in common practice. I was especially amused by the diversion into the world of "ferret legging" on p. 201. "Ferret legging is a centuries-old English sport in which the contestant stuffs a pair of ill-tempered ferrets down his pants." Several restrictions apply, including a total ban on undergarments of any sort. The winner is the person who can keep the ferrets in their pants the longest. The current record holder is a 72 year old Welsh coal miner named Reg Mellor who has kept two ferrets in his pants for the unbelievable time of five hours and twenty-six minutes. Humorous diversions such as this break the tension of the life-or-death decisions that the majority of the book deals with, and are a welcome relief after some of the more nail-biting sections.

My only critique of the book would be the rather enormous over-weighting of canine cases in the book, although I don't know if that is representative of Dr. Trout's practice, or if he simply prefers dogs to cats. Any animal lover should love and appreciate this book in its entirety, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars best referance, Plumb's is a Plum, June 19, 2008
if you are in the veterinary field, you need this book!! I have bought the newest edition of Plumbs as each one has come out. If a medication is used in veterinary treatments, approved or not for animal use, Plumbs will tell you everything about that drug. Drawbacks, cautions, dosages,(including which dosage for different species, as well as dosages for different problems). I have been a vet tech for close to 30 years, and this is the best drug referance I have ever used.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, February 23, 2009
As anyone who has attended veterinary school can attest to, good books are both a saving grace and an incredible burden.

Plumb is an incredible resource, providing detailed information on an expansive list of drugs. Truly this is a comprehensive and invaluable resource for any veterinary student and I'd imagine I'll be using the updated version of the desk reference in practice when I graduate (and can afford it).

However, this pocket version is simply not worth your money. Merely three days after I received this in the mail the binding started cracking and now several pages are falling out. This is a thick book and probably should have been bound in hardcover like the Merck manual, which is comparable in size. For something that costs over twice as much as the Merck, this cost saving measure is unwarranted and unappreciated.

So as the title states, I'm disappointed with my purchase. I'm a person that takes good care of my reference materials so that they last and this literally started falling apart in days. If you absolutely need this text, I'd suggest buying the desk reference instead. A classmate of mine opted for that version and while it is also paperback, its pages are significantly wider which limits its thickness and she's had no problems with the binding thus far.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent veterinary drug handbook, August 3, 2008
This is the very best pharmaceutical book I have ever owned.
What makes it so worth the price is that not only are the drugs
listed alphabetically by name, but also you can reference them by
use- for example "Otic preparations" "Opthalmic analgesics" and etc...
Plus, it is very complete in giving you a wide range of dosages and is very inclusive of all veterinary drugs on the market. Truly a wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook: CD, November 2, 2009
I really like the content of the handbook. This is the second time I have had to purchase the CD. My computer crashed and I lost the CD from the first purchase. The only thing I do not like with this version is that I can not load it onto my computer and I have to have the CD in the computer to run the handbook. This slows it down considerably.

Jec Ballou has written a Masterpiece work which is a cummulation of her studies, experience, equine knowledge, and love and respect for this wonderful animal. This book is a must for anyone, from beginner to experienced level, and will assist greatly in achieving a balanced, healthy horse who enjoys his/her work, and will enjoy years of soundness and athletic performance that can only come from a proper foundation. I found that the way she has written the book, the application of her program can be implemented at any stage, whether you are just starting a youngster, want to purify the movements of your horse, or keep your senior companion sound and willing. The pull out cards that you can take with you while working are great, too. I want to buy a second one just to save for my library.

    5-0 out of 5 stars J, May 12, 2010
This book is very well written easy to understand and the cut-out cards at the back of the book make it easy to take them into the barn instead of the entire book. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in new routines and exercises for their horse.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Routine, April 15, 2010
This book is very important and I always want to know about: how the horses use his body and how the muscles work. Equine Fitness gave me the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another good book from Jec Ballou, February 26, 2010
Equine Fitness is as good as 101 Dressage Exercises, the other book by Ballou. The exercises in both books are easy to understand and apply to many situations. Ballou's step-by-step program for introducing a horse to a fitness regime is well thought out, and I plan to use it as I rehab my CWB mare, Juno, when she finally recovers from a year-long lameness episode which was due to a shoulder injury.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I know what, when, and how to help my horse, November 7, 2010
I have bought three copies of this book so far: one I gave away to my trainer (who loved it), one to mess with (cut out cards, write notes on, drag out to the barn, etc.), and one to keep on the coffee table for constant reference. Just the chapter and exercises on the horse's neck were, for me, the best and clearest description of how to help build your horse's top line in the most effective, healthy way was worth much more than the price of the book.

I have gained a lot more confidence from Jec's clear, careful explanations and the excellent illustrations, so that I now have a plan when I go out to work with my horses. As winter and rain season approaches, I also now feel like I have exercises I can do even in a very small space, and even if it is too wet to actually ride. I spent the last year working on getting one of my gaited horses to trot, and trot with a good stretched top line and also 'on the bit', but was still struggling until Jec helped put the rest of the pieces together.

Just a few of the specific things I have learned to do in this book include:
How to do a proper warm-up
Vary the workouts throughout the week and month to better "cross-train" my horses for better sustainable fitness
How to strengthen the hind end
The importance of working on getting the correct bend, and tools for helping make it happen
How and why NOT to make the most common mistake of "forcing" contact in a frame the horse is not ready for (and how to evaluate what they ARE ready for)
How to bring a horse back from a vacation or other layoff
How to work the older and/or stiffer horse
But mainly, I now have a much deeper understanding and rich toolset for helping my horses become better athletes in a way that is sustainable, healthy and feels good for both horse and rider.

I have Icelandic horses -- all gaited -- and though this book does not address specific development of gaited horses, everything in it is exactly what my horses need to work better in all gaits, and especially to enhance their "special" gaits (tolt and flying pace).

What the book does NOT address (or try to) is rider performance and fitness. So, that needs to
be the next book please! Because as wonderful as the book is, it is clear that some of what horses need to become better athletes is simply for us to become better riders.
Overall, this is the best money I have spent on a horse book... all three times! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pet owners, read this book!!, May 28, 1999
If you do not to read, hire someone to read it for you!! Your pets will thank you.

I lost a cat to cancer two years ago. My feeling that I was somehow responsible for his demise at such a young age wasn't entirely grief related. For instance, was there something wrong with feeding an animal the same old stuff day and night for his/her entire life, often dried stuff at that? If so, what other options were there? And how about tap water? If we the people are concerned about drinking it, what about our pets? Inquiries about diet to everyone, vets included, almost always elicit the same response: do not feed table food or "scraps." Trouble is, most of us just do not have a scientific and/or medical background with which to argue the point. Dr. Goldstein discusses food and tap water and how it affects health in this book.

All that is required for reading this book is an open, active mind and the ability to strive for something better. People who have added lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and, yes, even soy products to their diets know that they feel better, look better, and are healthier. And so it would be with animals. My 3 remaining cats are doing much better after only two weeks on real MEAT, grains, and vegetables. I know my cats so you can trust me on this point. Some people will want studies. Well, scientists have concocted chemicals for making the RENDERED BY-PRODUCTS in commercial pet food appealing to animals via smell and/or taste. But show me a study which says it's GOOD for our animals. Isn't it golden age advertising and hasn't it worked, especially in this busy world!! Incidentally, several natural pet food brands are mentioned in the book for non-cookers.

Finally, I've concentrated my comments on diet (and maybe one or two too many on my own opinions :)) because health starts with food and food is one aspect we pet owners really have control over. However, Dr. Goldstein covers many other topics including vaccines, herbs, supplements, natural remedies, and devotes an entire chapter to cancer. Many of his patients are very sick. He explains why he believes in helping an animal heal itself by treating the disease rather than the symptoms. Feeding real food is part of the process. Dr. Goldstein writes from experience. He even admits he doesn't understand how or why some of the holistic methods work; he's just seen it work year after year. His final chapters deal with the spiritual realm, including our relationship with our pets, and death of pets (choosing when to let go, euthanasia, grieving). There is an extensive resource guide at the back.

I also recommend FOOD PETS DIE FOR by Ann N. Martin. She spent 7 years investigating the ingredients in commercial pet food. If you read that book first, you'll surely want to read this one (or vice versa).

Whoa, did I get ever get carried away here. But I've waited a long time for this book. Thank you, Dr. Goldstein, for writing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to Holistic Pet Care, August 22, 2000
While written for the average pet owner who is not familiar with terms such as vaccinosis or nosodes, even those of us who have been into natural rearing for a long time can find some useful information in this book. The section on heartworm, for instance, is excellent. Few vets are even aware of the fact that alternative heartworm prevention and treatment methods exist. Also excellent: the chapters on vaccinations and the nature of disease.
The chapter on nutrition points the reader in the right direction (i.e., away from processed pet foods and toward homeprepared fresh food diets), but there's not enough information to enable readers to formulate a balanced homemade diet for their dogs or cats (Dr. Pitcairn's book is better in that regard).
Dr. Goldstein is not a classical homeopath and some people may object to his use of homeopathic remedies. Nonetheless, his A-Z guide to canine/feline ailments and their possible cures is thorough and full of useful information. He uses dietary supplements, glandulars, Western and Chinese herbs, homeopathy, flower remedies, and occasionally even allopathic drugs. His motto seems to be "whatever works." The chapter on cancer is good but would have been even better if Dr. Goldstein had addressed the important dietary guidelines for cancer patients and survivors.
The book concludes with a wonderful chapter on the spiritual connection between us and our animals and a great chapter on coping with the death of a beloved pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars This will change your views of the veterinary profession!, December 13, 1999
I have been providing our dogs with alternative health treatments since 1995. I was fed up with conventional care--too many pills that merely masked underlying illnesses and no real treatment. Our dogs have glowing health and everyone remarks on their vigor & beautiful coats. Dr. Goldstein, because of his successes with cancer & chronic illnesses, has conventional veterinarians quaking in their boots. So much of medicine is run by the profit motive, totally denying the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors and vets. Think of the marketing of pet foods and vaccinations in the office of the vet--two of the biggest money-makers in the industry. It is no wonder those boots are quaking. I implore you to read this book for the sake of your pets' health.

3-0 out of 5 stars Holistic Medications can still be harmful, November 6, 2000
I ordered Dr. Goldstein's book and have found it very enlightning on the alternative methods of treating animals holistically. I fortunately have a great holistic vet, but after Bailey suffering with allergies, and reading Dr. Goldstein's suggestion, I dosed him with the recommended dosage of homeopathic meds that Dr. Goldstein recommends. My dog had a very very bad reaction to one of the ingredients in this medication and could not breathe. My dog is fine now, but I think that what you should take away from this book is the value of holistic treatments, but don't assume that just because it is homeopathy that there are not risks involved. I was very lucky with my dog Bailey, and I would just make sure that if you are interested in treating your animal holistically that you do it under the advice of a trained vet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please buy and read this book., December 20, 1999
I have read many books on holistic/alternative veterinary medicine over the years in order to keep my 5 cats and 5 dogs as happy and healthy as possible. But I've never read one as useful, comprehensive, and readable as Dr. Goldstein's. His explanation, for example, of vaccinosis (disease resulting from too many and too frequent vaccinations) is the most understandable you'll find anywhere. And in discussing treatments, he not only gives you medicines and sources, he even gives dosages based on the pet's weight. Not very many books do this! I am recommending this book to everyone I know who owns a dog or cat, and I urge you, I BESEECH you, to buy this book and begin partnering with your vet to make better decisions about how to keep your pet healthy and, when treatment for illness is needed, how to use less invasive and harmful cures that treat the source of the illness rather than the symptom. If you're reading this, I'm probably preaching to the choir. But if you buy this book, please pass the word along to your friends with animal companions. Most of them will be interested; they've just never thought to question conventional veterinary medicine and so don't know it's not a great idea to give their pets yearly vaccinations and cortisone shots for allergies. They deserve to know the rest of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Path" less traveled... a refreshing approach to pet care!, April 15, 2004
I have been waiting SO long for a book like this! Little did I know that Dr. Goldstein had finally granted the hopes and wishes of people across the nation begging for an alternative to the drugs, disease, and unnecessary treatments plaguing our pets. His book is one enormous expos on the veterinary and pet food industries!

    **Highlights**
The first 4 chapters; if you read nothing else, I beg you to read chapters 1-4.
    - Chapter 1 & 2 make the concept of disease and infirmity completely understandable. Basically, sickness is the absence of health! Restoring health, instead of squelching the symptoms of illness, is the only way to your pet's ultimate wellness, longevity, and quality of life.
    - Chapters 3 & 4 are about food and vaccines respectively. Dr. Goldstein covers all of the basics of what is wrong with that bag of kibble in the closet, and why our companions deserve the best we can give them... not to mention the numerous health benefits of feeding them a wholesome food! In chapter 4 he goes on the expose the facts about vaccinations, why the could be HARMING our pets instead of helping them, and what vaccines are really necessary (if any).

    Best Points:
Very inspiring and motivating! If you've ever had excuses for doing things "just because I've always done it this way" this book will definitely change your perspective.
Dr. Goldstein is a real person. Not gimmicky like other authors, he actually admits his faults and explains his own reasoning. He is extremely credible (see his credentials as a vet) and believable.
The book is very well-written and easy to read
Back section has an "Alphabet of Ailments" from allergies to worms, and how to treat them effectively with natural remedies
The book is "open" and very fit-to-your-lifestyle

Things some people may be uncomfortable with:
The "evidence" for his theories is largely anecdotal... but since half of healing and medicine is mystery, there is no way to test "wellness" or a degree of healing really. The volume of evidence is enormous, yet still the extremely scientifically minded may have a problem with it.
He does discuss topics like animal "spirituality" which some may not agree with. He also talks about animal communicators and his own qualms about such things though, so it's fairly balanced.

An entire chapter is devoted to the "big C"... Cancer. From causes to cures he sheds an interesting light on the role of veterinary medicine in cancer.

Overall, this is THE best book I have read on the subject of healing in general. I urge any pet lover to read it, especially if you are skeptical about holistic/alternative therapies. It is explanatory, helpful, and inspiring!

    5-0 out of 5 stars An Animal's Best Friend, February 1, 2003
I only read Dr. Goldstein's book after I had the supreme pleasure of having him treat my 11-year-old cat, who was dying from feline squamous cell carcinoma of the jawbone. Anyone who has had the opportunity of knowing Dr. Goldstein, or Dr. Marty, as he likes to be called, will tell you he is a true humanitarian. His book comes from the heart & is a valuable guide to pet care. The chapters on "The Death of a Pet" & "Taking on Cancer" were lifesavers for my husband & myself, when we we had to make the final decision to euthanize our pet. His extraordinary efforts with cryosurgery gave our pet 3 pain-free months she would not have had, otherwise. In addition, it gave us the time we needed to accept her eventual death. I have referred countless people to Dr. Goldstein & I have given his book as gifts to friends. Thank goodness someone like him, who is not afraid to take calculated risks & who ignores naysayers, exists in a profession that tends to acquiesce to scientific proof. God bless him!

5-0 out of 5 stars Drips with compassion, March 3, 2007
This is a book that drips with compassion, page by page, chapter by chapter. If you own a pet or are thinking about getting one, this is not merely recommended. It is required reading in my opinion. Once in awhile, we come across an individual, who has risen above his peers and made quantam strides in a field, but yet has no ego about it. Such a person does so, I believe, because it is their goal to achieve the product, and not so much the reward of their labors. Dr. Goldstein is one of these rare individuals who has risen to greatness treating animals with the purpose of increasing their health and quality of life rather than merely treating them in methods that the veterinary industry, as a group, has evolved. His practice is holistic in the sense that he uses what works. And that does include some conventional veterinary methods. It's all about what's best for the pet.

In reading this book, you will encounter case histories of Dr. Goldstein's, what he did, what he learned. You discover how he became a holistic vet, having practiced conventionally for a number of years. He was interested in treating animals and improving their lives. Compassion.

Dr. Goldstein has a lot to say about diet. And it makes sense that this one point is such a vital element to an animal's life. The chapter titles says it all: "It All Starts with Food." I could never understand how vets prescribe a diet for cats with renal problems that is so low in protein when a cat's natural diet is diametrically opposite. While it makes sense to not stress the kidneys, removing protein is not necessarily the best approach. Especially when cancer is so prevalent and cancer thrives on carbohydrate diets.

And Dr. Goldstein introduces invaluable information about vaccines. The link between vaccines and ailments, including cancers, is now well-known among many vets that your vet today may well ask if your cat is indoor or outdoor to determine if Fluffy really needs all the vaccinnes. Compelling information is provided that our pets are grossly over-vaccinated to the point where the vaccines are introducing more problems than they are solving. Don't count on your local vet to know all of these details. As pet owners, it is really our responsibility to have the final say on what is put into our animal's body.

An entire chapter is devoted to cancer. This has become a disease that your pet may well develop if treated conventionally with vet-recommended diets and annual vaccinations. It is what Dr. Goldstein sees daily. His brother's pioneering work with cryosurgery is part of the regimen that Dr. Goldstein's clinic uses to this day to remove or kill tumors. It is far less costly without the nasty side-effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the more spiritual aspects of the book, which includes a chapter on the spiritual nature of animals and the death of a pet. Our friends don't live forever, unfortunately. This part of the book touched on something I experienced that I had previously believed was merely my imagination, yet it was something other pet owners experienced after the death of a pet. It made sense.

As I mentioned at the outset, this book just plain drips with compassion throughout. You can't help but feel it, see it and understand it.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRESERVE YOUR DOGS HEALTH AND LIFE STARTING NOW, March 7, 2001
I am always referring this book to all of my dog owner friends. I have 2 dogs. AKC Cairn Terriers. The female is 13yo diagnosed by conventional doctor w/Congestive heart failure(March2000) I nearly had her euthanized-the coughing and quality of life was not good. I had her blood drawn by my conventional vet&sent it to Smith Ridge Vet Center(Dr Goldsteins Center)for BNA (Bio-Nutritional Analysis)and Dr. Aiken consulted by phone and prescribed supplements and advice on how to CURE her. It has. She is a young pup again. #2 dog-3yr old male cairn-$600. broncoscopy by conventional vet specialist-diagnosed with COPD-chronic obstructed pulmonary disease. I did it again-sent his blood away for testing..2 months of supplements and no further COPD symptoms. After the supplements helped them I then gave in and changed their diet-Dr Goldstein and newsletter"Whole Dog Journal"have advocated the BARF diet. (Bones And Raw Food) I am a vegetarian. It took a lotta love and research to convince me,and it has paid off in miracle health and vitality, clean teeth!! Aunt Jeni's homemade dog food is the only way to go.It is a reccommended alternative by Dr. Goldsteins office. I only wish that ALL pet owners will read this and then make the decision to help your dog now instead of relying upon so many self centered interest groups involved in animal health. If you want to help your best friend-then please read this book and call Smith Ridge. They are the BEST.

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 for learning about holistic animal care, October 10, 2000
Dr. Goldstein started his career as a traditional allopathic veterinary. However, over the years he discovered (often through taking better care of himself) that maybe traditional medicine wasn't really healing, or creating healthier animals, but merely suppressing symptoms. Over time, his way of dealing with illness and creating wellness changed.

The Nature of Animal Healing provides information on diet, disease and treatment for dogs and cats. He discusses the various modalities, herbs and other products useful in treating animals. There is an excellent chapter on specific ailments and how to treat them. Dr. Goldstein devotes an entire chapter to treating cancer -- a disease state far too common with our animal friends. This book is highly recommended as an introduction to natural healing and wellness. It is also valuable as a reference text for those more familiar with alternative veterinary care. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

All My Patients Have Tales is a charming, funny, and engaging collection of stories in the great tradition of All Creatures Great and Small by the late James Herriot. Jeff Wells works in a mixed practice where he treats both farm animals and house pets, with the occasional exotic thrown in. Among the many uplifting, life-altering, life-threatening, and hilarious episodes Wells relates are stories featuring a turkey attack, porcupine-quill covered terriers, a pregnant male cat, a heavy-metal Chihuahua with road burn, an ornery pygmy donkey, a giant hog, a constipated cow, and many others.

This perfect little gem of a book will appeal to anyone who has pets, all animal lovers, and anyone who has ever toyed with the idea of becoming a vet.

Dr. Wells has brought the world and challenges of being a Veterinarian into your home in this wonderful and well written book about his experiences. I bought the book for my niece, but had to read it before she ever got it. She is in Vet school and bought more for her friends. My brother, a M.D., enjoyed it immensely. We ordered more for other members of the family and friends. It is not only stories about dogs (as the cover indicates) but animals - large and small - that Dr. Wells has helped. It is touching, warm, educational, interesting, intriguing and a most enjoyable read! Any Vet wannabes or just people loving animals will enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!, February 4, 2008
This book is so well written, and truly IS a modern-day James Herriot book, like I read in the other review. If you love animals, this is a MUST read. You will have a new appreciation for what veterinarians do on a daily basis, and the people that they come across, too. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delight from beginning to end - a wonderful mix of belly laughs and touching moments, November 16, 2007
The title of this book is what first caught my attention; I loved the "play on words" with tales and the picture of those wagging tails on the cover!

Being an animal lover, I enjoy reading stories of people sharing their experiences with pets. My husband and I joke that our two cats are cheap entertainment as we watch them slide across our floor to bat at a toy, chase their tails or chirp at the birds outside. When I began reading Jeff's stories about his experiences with animals and their owners, I found I could not put the book down until I reached the last tale. Jeff is a wonderful story-teller; one moment, you experience the emotional heartache of owners and Jeff as a vet tending to a sick or injured pet, and the next, you are roaring with laughter at the antics of the pets - and owners!

A great read and wonderful book to take with you when traveling.

If you loved the wonderful stories and books that millions did by James Herriot, than All My Patients Have Tales is right up your alley. The front and back covers will make you smile; forcing you to dive into what lies between the two covers. The stories are touching and humorous. The perfect gift for anyone who loves animals.

This is a very easy read and certainly illuminates the life of a vet! It's so interesting to hear the story behind the person. My wife and I both read this book in our spare moments each day. We always looked forward to to our opportunities to read about the next 'adventure', often sharing a chuckle between us! After the last chapter, we found ourselves wanting to read still further!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inhale Deeply, April 8, 2008
"A breath of fresh air" applies to Jeff Wells' collection of stories that demonstrate "why veterinary medicine is a true calling." Sure, he's sloshed through a lot of poop, been rained on by vomit, and reached into the abyss of numerous cows and horses, but he's also treated a leather clad chihuahua named Megadeath, released puppies stuck in their father's (?) birth canal, and experienced a lifetime of opportunities to laugh at himself. Read ALL MY PATIENTS HAVE TALES. Inhale deeply; you'll get a wonderful whiff of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book! Reminds me of Herriot, August 5, 2010
"Patients" is a book I thoroughly enjoyed. It reminds me more than a little of James Herriot, without as much of the family stuff that I found a little tedious with Herriot. I can't wait to read more from this author!!!!

    3-0 out of 5 stars A Vet with a Heart, May 2, 2010
I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if, years ago, I had not read very similar books written by James Herriot. This book is written along the same lines - insecure vet meets contrary animals with insensitve owners - but Jeff Wells does not have the same level of writing skills of a James Herriot. But once I had managed to stop comparing the two vets, I enjoyed these short stories very much, although at times I wished they were not quite so short. The only real criticism I would offer is that Wells does not seem to know the meaning of certain words. He uses words such as 'sneer', 'smirk' and 'leer' quite frequently as discriptors and more often that not, they are clearly not used properly. For instance, when a owner stabbed his finger into an area that Wells had just cleaned in preparation for surgery, Wells said that he leered at him. Maybe he meant glared? He talks about one of his colleagues smirking at his inexperience, and another sneeringly asking him a question, implying a level of unfriendliness that was not in keeping with his descriptions of them. Other than the grammatical distractions and a paucity of detail, I found this book worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother of future Vet, March 3, 2010
My 10-year old loves this book. Some of the words and subject matter are too mature for her level of reading. But, she skips over the parts she doesn't understand. She thoroughly enjoys the book. She wants to become a veterinarian-so this book helps her imagine what it is like. I gave her 3 or 4 veterinarian books for Christmas-but this is the one she has commented about the most.

4-0 out of 5 stars All My Patients Have Tales, March 20, 2007
I enjoyed the book very much! However, the reason I purchased two copies was that I currently teach adult reading and writing and was looking for material with adult interest. My readers are not reading at the level the book was written, so I was not able to use it for that purpose at this time. The vocabulary is very rich and I will be able to use it as the students I teach improve their skills. I have a new respect for veterinarians! ... Read more

Saunders Veterinary Anatomy Coloring Book includes approximately 300 illustrations to study and color. The coloring book helps you memorize the anatomy content you need to know in both veterinary medicine and veterinary technology and gives you a fun way to review the information you have studied. All illustrations in the book are suitable for coloring and are of the highest quality, created by expert medical illustrators.

Organized by body region, the book is divided into sections devoted to the head and neck; neck, back, and vertebral column; thorax; abdomen; pelvis; forlimb; and hindlimb.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!, September 11, 2010
This book far exceeded my expectations! With over 300 illustrations ranging from equine, feline, canine, etc. it covers a huge variety of systems and muscle groups! Was very, very impressed! My high school (within LAUSD) is creating a zoology class in the next year, and I have recommended this book to them which will be the main source for all the worksheet and labeling assignments!! Very detailed book and the pictures are extremely sharp and accurate! Very, very good product for the price. I can't recommend it enough. Each animal type is categorized by body positions and anatomical views, rendering a complete view of the animal over several different sections in the book.

A typical layout of any page will include:

    1) the anatomical view of the animal
    2) 22+ different labels of the sanctioned (according to #chapter) parts to color!
    3) Description of the system at the top of the page (what you are looking at)
    4) Clean, non-waxed or glossy paper, to color on
    ...and more!!!!

But to any potential buyers, whether you are a vet student, zoologist, animal system aficionado, or simply have a minor interest in animal sciences and anatomy (like me), then I highly recommend this book for you! I would not recommend buying a textbook that runs from $50-$98, until you buy this book. For only a fraction of the cost of veterinary textbooks, it serves as a great introduction to veterinary medicine and anatomy!

*** I would suggest buying a 2" binder, photocopying (at work or a friend's office, the pages of interest to you) and then storing it in the binder and keeping the book in your library for safe-keeping. That way you can have a more professional reference tool and sell the book, "unmarked" and in "like new condition" in the future! Thanks for reading the review!

5-0 out of 5 stars Color and learn., March 23, 2010
This is a very useful tool in teaching veterinary anatomy. I had a similar coloring book on human anatomy when teaching Medical School. Students found it very easy to remember what they had colored and the diagrams were excellent. I intend to use the veterinary book for my animal classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars kinda dissapointed with saunders, March 8, 2010
i purchased this book because it's by saunders, who makes a fabulous veterinary medical dictionary. however, i expected A LOT more from this book. there's almost zero anatomy of the different body systems. this mostly covers bones and muscles, but even this is limited. there are comparative pictures of across different species, but it feels like they tried to cram too much into one book. so even on the information that's here, there isn't much detail. the picture descriptions are also lacking. i gave it 3/5 stars because it is a nice coloring book, but its certainly nothing special.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the human anatomy coloring book, May 22, 2010
There are no comments describing the pictures at all. There are also no coloring instructions, and the labels are not always clear. You almost need a regular anatomy book next to you to reference while coloring. While a few of the specific veterinary diagrams are useful, particularly the ones comparing different species, I think overall the human anatomy coloring book is far superior. Since color contrast is helpful, I think you could get A LOT more out of the human anatomy coloring book and the diagrams from a regular veterinary anatomy book. The diagrams in this book are all taken from either Dyce or Miller so they are good in and of themselves, but for coloring this book is useless (because of inadequate labeling and instructions), frustrating, and very disappointing.

Sometimes it is difficult to buy a book off the internet if you are unfamiliar with it and are not sure if it's really what you want. With a book like this, you really need to browse through it to see if it's worth the money. Well, I'm an owner of an elderly cat and decided it was time to have a book like this handy in case symptoms arose. This is, without a doubt, the best cat care book there is! Trust me, you don't need to look through it first before you buy it ~ it covers every area, illness, ANYTHING you need to help you when you are concerned about your cat's health. It explains everything in easy-to-understand text and gives you information about cats in general. I'm so glad I have this book..it is a great reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Find Any Cat Concern Here!, January 16, 2000
I was given this book the first Christmas I had my first cat. The person who gave it to me is an owner of about 15-20 homeless dogs(numbers vary) and has found the dog version to be helpful. I have found this book to be a necessary item...better than many "people" guide books. I can actually have an intelligent conversation with my vet before(and if) I have to take my cats in to see him. If my vet mentions a specific malady, I can look it up and find a simple definition. It's truly user-friendly! It's a must for those new to cats AND those cat experts. I would also recommend the dog & small animal version for those to whom it applies. We need an automachanic's book that is this simple & helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book to buy!, November 6, 1999
As a librarian, I have access to many books on cats and their health problems; as the owner of 14 cats, I find myself consulting those books frequently. This book is the one I go to first and I am never disappointed. The quality and quantity of information is wonderful! If you only buy one book on cat health, it should be this one. If you already have a collection of books on the subject, this book will provide valuable, useful information that you won't find in any of your other books. It is an *excellent* book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers a comprehensive resource for cat owners., January 4, 1999
This is a must-have for any cat owner. While it does help to have a basic understanding of medical terms, the book offers an in-depth resource for ailments of all types as well as information on basic cat-care. Photos throughout the book aid in visual recognition of signs and symptoms of a multitude of illnesses.

We do cat rescue and have recommended or given this book to many people. It's a good basic book, helps explain when to go to vet, not too hard to read.

I disagree that the "gross pictures" shouldn't be in there -- You don't have to look at them, and they're there to teach what some things may look like. We've found some of the pictures quite useful.

The argument that "if my cat looked that bad we'd be at the vet" is kind of off the point -- this book is good because it is a great COMPANION to your vet --

Anyhow, very good book. I too wish there was a more recent edition, but much of the most changed stuff since 1995, is at a higher technical level than this book.

For the next level up, Feline Husbandry, and Feline Diseases by Niels Pedersen are great...

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Surpasses This Book, April 26, 2000
There is no better book on this subject. This is not a "You and Your Kitten" book, nor is it written with complicated language that only professionals (vets) can understand. It provides the layperson with high-level, helpful information, while always noting when it is important to seek advice from a veterinarian. It's not meant to replace veterinary care. This book is my "cat care bible", and I refer to it constantly. It's the most useful book I've ever purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on cat care..., March 7, 2003
that even a laymen can understand!
I purchased this book a while ago simply because I had multiple cats in the house that were becoming geriatric and I wanted to make sure I was doing the best for them in their twilight. I am also working on my Pre-Vet Curricula for intrance into Vet School.
Then I became a surrogate mommy for a new born kitten that had been abandoned my its feral mother only hours after it was born. Not wanting this wee one to expire, I took her home to raise myself, and immediately got on the Internet looking for info on the proper measures to care for her (I forgot about this book). I found a few helpful sites, but each one was contradicting the other...which for anyone is confusing. Thinking I needed a professional opinion on the subject, & went to my library of reference books & schoolbooks. Luckfully, I ran across this one & decided to see if it mentioned anything at all. To my surprise, it had the most complete section on orphaned kitten care than any of the other books & the Internet sites. I greatly recommend this book for any cat owner, be their cats young or old, it has information aplenty to assist you in caring for your 4-footed loved one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, BUT...., May 6, 2000
Just received the book yesterday, have read most of it and it's Great! Only a few criticsms. The first and foremost is the authors' mistaken insistence on FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) testing for cats/kittens. There is no, repeat NO, NADA test for FIP in a live cat/kitten - it's only conclusive on necropsy. (Further info at http://www.cfainc.org/caring.html)

In the section on kidney diseases they totally ignored PKD (polycystic kidney disease), which Persian breeders have realized is a genetic problem and have been breeding away from. (Also more info at the above site) I feel this is a gross oversight on the part of these authors.

Unfortunately, FIV (feline immunodeficiency disease, also known as feline AIDS) isn't mentioned. This IS a condition that's easily tested for by any competent vet.

I really hope these authors address these errors and omissions in a new edition of this wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive vet advice, September 16, 2005
I love this book! It is well-written, not too technical, yet very descriptive. The photos, although heart-breaking, helped illustrate clearly any possible problem my cats could encounter. Every question I threw at it was answered to my satisfaction. It is very well-organized and I found the section on caring for an aged cat to be very enlightening. I recommend this book belong in every library in a household with cats.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference book for all cat owners!!, February 28, 2006
After continually receiving calls from family & friends who ask me to 'look up' something for them, this year I've begun giving this book as gifts to all my cat-loving friends & family.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, February 27, 2007
This is a must have for any small animal veterinarian or student. It blows the "5 Minute Consult" out of the water. There is always someone using it our practice, we have just decided to leave it out on our treatment table. It's a very concise but thorough reference for everyday use. It's well organized and easy to read. 95% of the time the information we need is in there. If not, we refer to specific books on Optho, derm etc but you could practice veterinary medicine with just this book! I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, May 28, 2007
I am very impressed with this book - it was recommended to me by colleagues. I find the differential diagnoses lists especially helpful, and the online reference tool is excellent too.
    Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but....., December 27, 2007
As a relief vet, I can't always count on a practice having all the references I need, and I can't carry an entire library with me. Clinical Vet Advisor packs lots of info into a single volume. I use this book every day. My only complaint is that the support website (a major selling point for the book)has not been working well. Content is very slow to load. Also, the text promises that client information handouts are available in Spanish as well as English, but for several weeks the Spanish handouts have been offline. The webmaster says they are working on the problem, but a webpage content problem that continues for several weeks generally means nothing is being done.

Edit: As of 2/08 the website problems have been resolved and the Spanish language handouts can be printed. This is a big deal when practicing in Southern California.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference for general practice., November 23, 2008
This is an outstanding reference for a general veterinary practice. The client handouts, available in english and spanish, are clearly written and very valuable tools in client education. The book is well organized and the CD so easy to search. I think both new grads and "seasoned" practitioners will find this helpful in everyday practice. It is absolutely worth the already reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Veterinary Reference for General Practice, June 13, 2010
This is the best reference book for general practice. It has nearly everything you will need at hand quickly....similar to the 5 Minute Consult, it also includes a section on how to perform certain hospital procedures (with photos), a section with algorithms and another section that describes many laboratory tests and how to perform them correctly. If there is one book you should have in clinical practice, this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books I own, March 26, 2010
I bought this book to help write SOAPs during fourth year of vet school but will treasure it for a long time. When I brought it with me to my outside clinical experience and used it with real cases it not only provided fast and easily accessed insight, it had great and easy to use instructions right in the text. The veterinarians at the clinic bought a copy for themselves before I left. It doesn't go into detail like a medicine book, but it provides a concise source of information that helps you know where to look and helps to remind you what else you should be considering.

For instance, under treatment for ventricular tachycardia it doesn't just say to start a lidocaine CRI, it actually says how much lidocaine to add to what size bag of fluids to make the desired concentration and how fast to give it to achieve the administration rate recommended. This is very helpful at 3am.

The only thing I would change is the differential lists. While some of these lists are provided in the book, most are only available online, which is very inconvenient when you don't always have ready access to a computer that is online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for vet school and in practice, February 4, 2010
As a new small animal vet, this is my number one "go to" book for just about everything. Diagnostics, differentials, techniques, treatments, clin path, formulary, etc. I really wish I had found this book while in vet school as it would have been a great help. This book, for me, has more useful information than the 5min Vet Consult and contains a much wider variety of information. You don't even have to have a diagnosis as you can look things up by symptom (i.e. coughing, ocular discharge, abdominal pain). I do find it a bit frustrating that some of the content is only available online, but I guess making the book thicker with the additional content wouldn't really be practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite reference book, September 9, 2009
I love this book! My favorite section is the "Procedures and Techniques" section. Has alot of procedures and walks you through them step by step telling you all the equipment you will need, what can go wrong and how to avoid it, with pictures as well. The Diseases and disorders section is great too with a quick almost everything you need to know about a disease in about 1 page. These are the parts I have used the most, but the other sections seem great too. Clinical algorithms are great for helping you figure out how to work up something properly. I am SO glad I bought this book! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

From the keeper of a family milk cow to the rancher overseeing a large beef herd, anyone who works with cattle has a vested interest in maintaining the animals' health. In most cases, the financial viability of a farm depends on the continued well-being of the farm animals. Large-animal veterinarians are in short supply and their bills can add up quickly, so it's often up to the farmer to provide routine health care.

The Cattle Health Handbook is the essential medical reference for farmers and ranchers confronting day-to-day bovine health issues. Heather Smith Thomas, an expert on livestock with decades of first-hand experience, covers every routine situation — and many not-so-common problems — likely to arise on a cattle ranch or dairy farm. Three broad sections cover common diseases, ailments specific to certain body systems, and other ailments and injuries.

Beginning with detailed information on how to detect signs of illness, the book progresses through the various causes of cattle health problems, describing symptoms and discussing prevention and treatment. Readers will find reassuring advice on handling bacterial and viral diseases; digestive and respiratory problems; eye, skin, foot, and mouth irritations; injuries and wounds; and much more. Thomas also helps farmers recognize when a situation calls for veterinary assistance. Case histories, real characters, and humorous anecdotes give the text a warm voice of authority.

Primary income source or country hobby, cattle are unique; the people who care for them want their animals to be healthy and comfortable. For the first-time dairy farmer or the experienced cattle rancher, this reliable volume is a must-have resource.

    Editorial Review

From the moment Jeff Guidry saw the emaciated baby eagle with broken wings, his life was changed. For weeks he and the staff at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center tended to the grievously injured bird. Miraculously, she recovered, and Jeff, a center volunteer, became her devoted caretaker.

Though Freedom would never fly, she had Jeff as her wings. And after Jeff was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2000, Freedom returned his gift. Between sessions of debilitating chemotherapy, Jeff went back to Sarvey and began taking Freedom for walks that soothed his spirit and gave him the strength to fight. When he learned he was cancer free, Jeff's first stop was Sarvey to walk with Freedom. Somehow this special bird seemed to understand the significance of the day. For the very first time she wrapped both her wings around Jeff, enveloping him in an avian hug.

In March 2008, Jeff shared his extraordinary experience with his friend Gayle in an e-mail of eight hundred words:

When Freedom came in she could not stand. Both wings were broken, her left wing in 4 places. . . . We here at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center made the decision to give her a chance at life. . . .

That e-mail would unexpectedly circle the globe and inspire countless fans eager to know more. In An Eagle Named Freedom, Jeff tells the full story of his bond with Freedom and introduces the other wildlife and volunteers who have been saved by Sarvey. A tender tale of hope, love, trust, and life, this moving true story is an affirmation of the spiritual connection that humans and animals share.

"I want to fly like an eagle til I'm free.
Fly like an eagle, let my spirit carry me." -- Steve Miller Band, 1976

"And I will raise you up on eagle's wings" -- Old Hymn

"Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not get tired; they will walk and not become weary." -- Isaiah, 40:31

This is one of the most beautiful stories about how love can transform wildlife and human lives. Jeff Guidry saves an injured eagle whose wings were broken. Traumatized and no longer able to fly, the eagle named Freedom relies on her human protectors to act as her wings.

Jeff Guidry's life changed as soon as he met the injured eaglet. He worked tirelessly with the team at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center. Fortunately for all, the eagle recovers and Jeff, who was a volunteer at Sarvey became solely responsible for the beautiful raptor.

In 2000 Jeff Guidry became as grounded as his eagle, Freedom. He was diagnosed with Stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Equally traumatized as his beautiful bird was when he rescued her, Jeff Guidry receives a wonderful gift from his bird. Coping with the grueling rounds of chemotherapy, Jeff fought back with a spirit not too different from his indomitable eagle. He walked Freedom regularly and watching his bird develop strength and confidence inspired him to do likewise.

Jeff was declared cancer free and the bond he had with his eagle was nothing short of miraculous. The day he received the good news, Jeff rushed to the Sarvey Center to walk his beautiful bird. The bond between the two was extraordinary; Freedom seemed to sense her friend's spectacular recovery. She threw her large wings around Jeff's shoulders, making Jeff the recipient of an aquiline hug.

By March of 2008, Jeff shared his avian experience with his friend Gayle via e-mail. By going to bat for a bird in need and sharing her story, that e-mail found its way around the world. People marveled at the kind man who gave an eagle a "chance at life" and how she in turn helped him to reclaim his.

This is a beautiful story that might even make you cry. I cannot recommend it highly enough and all who read this will be raised up on eagle's wings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't confuse simplicity with importance, July 28, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
First off, if you're a Barry Lopez/Annie Dillard-type nature writer fan, you won't find profound insights or deep reflections or pristine, original prose in this memoir of the relationship of the author with a young, mended eagle. But that's fine. Books serve different functions, and in the case of An Eagle Named Freedom, you get straightforward, journalistic prose; you also get entry into an emotional connection which in itself implies a certain philosophy. Don't read this book for its insights, necessarily: read it for its "mission." It's pretty much about a regular guy (being a back-up, albeit excellent rock musician shouldn't put you on the list of cultural icons). However, the lyrics to this 'narrative song' are a bit like rock ballads: strong on feelings, plain on execution. It could just be that is something the world needs. Not another impressive 'nature writer' but a person with an illness who bonds with a non-human rescued from its own disability, and relates simply his profound experience of bonding. You don't need ideological sophistication or an agenda or a taste for 'stylistically superior' writing to appreciate this book. But your 'ur' self should be able to relate and appreciate it. Imagine if this book about a simple spiritual awakening would sell as many copies or be as popular as Thomas Friedman's best sellers on globalization? It won't, but it's more likely to than the essays you find in The Atlantic or ......(take your pick). This book is about 'globalization' of the spirit. Jeff Guidry's 'journey' from a typical 'nature is nice' kind of guy to 'nature contains answers to my spiritual crisis' has backing by just about all major religions in the world, not to mention specific Native American religions. He doesn't need any footnotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Touching and Compelling Book, June 23, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was one of those who first found out about Freedom and Jeff from the widely circulated email that Jeff had originally sent to a friend, but had developed a life of its own. Like most who have commented on the email, I was deeply moved by the touching story of the eagle and the man and forwarded it to all of my friends.

When I saw the book "An Eagle Named Freedom" I ordered it immediately and have just finished reading it; it is both inspiring and saddening as it describes the lives of a young eagle and a man who are brought together by unexpected circumstances; it is a story of faith, hope, and an unusual friendship between an eagle and a man.

Jeff Guidry was a volunteer at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center at the time a very sick baby eagle was brought in with broken wings. The baby eagle's chances for survival didn't seem too promising but the team at Sarvey began a fight to try and save the baby eagle.

It won't be a spoiler to say the baby eagle survived and came to be known as Freedom; this is the story of that struggle for survival and the bonding that took place between Jeff and Freedom.

Mr. Guidry describes the process in a very interesting, easy to read manner; he also brings in much of the atmosphere that characterizes the Northwest region of the USA. You begin to get a better feeling for the love of the outdoors, the traditions of the native tribes and the general culture that permeates that region.

Mr. Guidry goes on to describe his efforts to help Freedom compensate for his inability to ever fly, and then describes how Freedom helped him deal with the cancer that threatened his life.

The story describes other "wild things" that have an impact on Jeff and Sarvey, Sasha, the playful cougar, and an assortment of birds, bears, and others that are brought to Sarvey for help and rehabilitation. He also tells the story of Mr. Timms, a remarkable little squirrel that wound up living in Jeff and Lynda's home.

Anyone who has loved an animal can relate to this story; all of us who have had the privilege of having an animal share their lives with us can join in the joy and sadness of life and death described in this book which I recommend to all of you.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Intimate Bond Between Bird and Man, July 4, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
An Eagle Named Freedom is Jeff Guidry's heartwarming, and often heartbreaking, 10-year memoir of his incredible life and bond with a Pacific Northwest American Bald Eagle named Freedom. In 1998 while Jeff is volunteering at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center in Washington State, a female baby eagle is brought in with two broken wings and is severely emaciated. She is only 3 feet tall, and weighs just 10 pounds. Jeff and coworker Kaye Baxter transfer the hurt bird to a veterinary clinic where they set and bind the wings hoping for the best. Freedom is brought back to Sarvey and undergoes months of healing. Initially showing no hope of recovery, she inches her way toward trust when Jeff shows her patience, love, and security, with his soft voice and protective care. Yet although she slowly gains her weight back, she never regains full use of her wings and will never take flight again. Sarvey's staff however is thrilled that she lived and decide to keep her for educational training, allowing Jeff to take on that task.

Jeff begins the slow process of glove training Freedom. Bird and man quickly bond, showing incredible patience, intuition, and love for each other's needs to make this attempt work. Jeff's eagle adapts easily and quickly graduates to being held with anklets and jesses. Soon this dynamic pair begin touring the local educational road-shows to educate the public about wildlife. Freedom and Jeff entertain Boy Scout troops, Native American Indian pow-wows, schools for children, and various other public awareness groups that need to learn about protecting the natural world around us.

But as life has it, good times don't usually last forever. Two years later after Jeff and Freedom are introduced, Jeff is diagnosed with type 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A lump on the side of his neck is instantly biopsied and pronounced malignant. The next 8 months are the most difficult Jeff will ever spend as he undergoes the hellish treatment of Chemotherapy that will nearly kill him. What saves Jeff's life, what keeps his flame burning and the will to live strong, is the unconditional love and kinship he receives from Freedom. This book is a tender sweet story of Jeff's deep love to heal his eagle, and the return gift that eagle hands back to him full-circle. When 8 months later Jeff's treatments show his body cancer free, he head's straight for the Sarvey center to let Freedom be the first to hear the good news. Taking Freedom out of her cage, the birds' keen insight knew Jeff was well and wrapped her giant wings around Jeff's shoulders in a loving protective embrace as if to say " we did it!"

In addition to the precious story of a man and his bird, the reader gets to enjoy many endearing stories of the other animal residents at Sarvey. Some tales humorous, some sweet, some heartbreaking, but this is not a book full of tear-jerking sadness. It is a shining light and dedication to those in the world who volunteer to keep our wildlife friends safe from harm, and assist in their well being in times of need. This memoir is about hope, never giving up, persistence to attain your goals no matter how dire life can be, and to treat our animal friends with as much love and respect we would our own family members. This is may be a short little book, but it is filled to the brim with a plentiful helping of inspiration for all of us that have a deep love and admiration for animals. An Eagle Named Freedom is written from the heart, penned well, and accompanied by wonderful color photographs of Jeff, Freedom and their friends at Sarvey. Nice story!

I enjoyed this true account of a Rescue Center near my home. The author has a passion for helpless animals that are injured, and the book is about how dealing with these creatures changed his life. (As he changed their lives also)

A quick read, even appropriate for older children.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Take an injured eagle, a wildlife rehab volunteer, a cancer diagnosis, and you have a moving story of mutual healing and the beauty of the human-animal connection. It is also a true story that takes place near where I live in northwestern Washington State.

In addition to the personal story, the reader is shown the highs and lows of volunteering at a wildlife rehab center. Some animals don't make it, and the ones that do are released back into the wild. This can be an emotional roller coaster for their caretakers. Some permanently disabled birds are used for public educational outreach. For me, the importance of this work for future generations was the take-away message of the book.

This book is a good companion to another one about the relationship between a bird and a human: Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Discovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence--and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process by Irene M. Pepperberg

I highly recommend both of these books. You will never look at a bird the same way again.

What a great story! I generally love true stories and this one lived up to all my expectations. I really loved learning/reading about the authors interaction with Freedom. What a fantastic feel good story. I know there was some health issues that were discussed but overall it was not a depressing story at all. I highly recommend to anyone - this is a good one to keep on the bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Wonderfully Told, and Important Information, July 28, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you love animals, you are likely to find this book a real page-turning read. I recommend it for that, as well as another very important reason.

The author volunteers at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center in Washington State. His name is Jeff Guidry, and his beloved, Lynda, plays a wonderful role in the story. One thing this book points out is the healing that animals can bring to humans. That's one reason to volunteer in wildlife care.

One of the most important things this book explains and repeatedly depicts is the difference between wild animals and domestic ones. Some of the animals the center winds up taking care of have been raised by people who thought they could domesticate a wild animal. They thought it was all in how the animal was raised, all about experience.

This is simply not the case, and the animals suffer hugely from people trying this. As the wild animal matures, instincts mature, too, and they are genetic, not from experience. Meanwhile, the animal has been deprived of early experiences it needed to survive in the wild when mature. It can't be tame anymore, and it can't make it in the wild, either.

There are quite a few animals that often fall victim to this human misunderstanding. After a lot of research, the Americans with Disabilities Act has very recently been updated to say that the only animals that qualify to be service animals to people with disabilties and have full public access are dogs and miniature horses. It has been found that other animals are just too unpredictable. Genetics make a huge difference.

Before adopting any animal, it is vital to do careful research. This book is a great story and will also help people understand a little bit more about the needs of wild animals. From there, before adopting any animal, research--a lot!

This is an inspiring story of an unusual relationship between a wounded man and a wounded eagle. It details the challenges of rescuing and caring for wild animals and the tribulations experienced by those who are assigned this job. I found the spiritual component of this book to be very intriguing. This is a must-read for people who are interested in the bond that can be formed between human beings and animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing, Heartwarming True Story, September 4, 2010
There is something so hauntingly beautiful, so important about Jeff and his relationship with the eagle Freedom, whose life he saved, that the single email he sent out telling his story to a friend was forwarded to others who were in turn deeply touched, and the story eventually spread to many thousands of people. I remember several years ago seeing a TV show featuring Freedom and Jeff that told how she enclosed him in her wings, giving him an "eagle hug" after he had beaten cancer (Jeff says Freedom came to him in his dreams and helped him fight the cancer). I never forgot it.
Over the years, many people, knowing that I have a 14 year relationship of my own with a wild red tail hawk, have sent me the email telling the story of Jeff and Freedom. When I learned that Jeff had at last come out with a book detailing his life-affirming friendship with Freedom, I immediately bought it and was not disappointed.
I don't doubt that Jeff's dreams of Freedom were "real" in a healing sense. One of my friends who was battling a deadly form of bone cancer, who had never heard of Jeff or Freedom, told me that his bi-weekly stays at the hospital for chemotherapy were made bearable by his "three angels", a trio of red tailed hawks that seemed to wait for him outside his hospital room window during each visit.
We have lost our relationship with the "wild ones", the animals who share our planet with us, and something in us longs to rediscover that bond. The massive response to the tale of Freedom and Jeff is a testament to our need for reconnecting to the Others. Jeff's story is a shining example of how friendship with a wild creature can literally save your life. If you want to feel the wonder of love, and discover the true importance of the beautiful "wild ones" can who touch our lives if make room for them, please read this book.

This is a great book for studying for the board exams (or for your own personal knowledge)... covers every aspect of veterinary technology you'd ever want to know about!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Study Tool for Vet Techs AND Instructors!, May 8, 2005
I used the second edition book back when I took (and aced) the VTNE for my Oregon certification. Let me also state that I "grandfathered in" as a Certified Veterinary Technician, meaning that what I knew, I'd picked up along the many years working in the field, as opposed to a formal academic environment. Years later, I used the 3rd edition for the California State Board Exam. The tests are similar enough that I passed the latter with flying colors (after all, the science is the same, regardless of geography!) I owe much of the success in both cases to the Colville guide.
I am now an instructor for the Vet Tech program at a local college, and recommend this book as an adjunct for studying--the CD-ROM is really helpful. It offers immediate feedback with the correct answers, which is much like using flash cards, only neater.
Whether you're a student studying for your first Board Exam, or a veteran of the field in need of a refresher course, this book does not disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review Questions and Answers for Veterinary Technicians, June 15, 2001
I used this text to study for my national boards two years ago and recommend to all of the students I encounter. It's a great way to test yourself before you take the exam. I purchased it about 6 weeks prior to. Each section gives you multiple choice questions about the knowledge you have already obtained. You can then grade yourself on the sections and see what weak areas you may need to "touch up on" before you test. It's well worth the money. I passed the exam, and felt it prepared me.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST STUDY BOOK TO GET!!!, June 10, 1999
This is a great book to study with. It will help you know what to study and it explains most answers you have. Totally worth your money!!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study-guide, September 14, 1999
I am studying now to take my boards in the Spring. This workbook is an excellent way for me to test myself, locate my areas of weakness and to improve upon those areas in time for the boards. My classmates all liked it so much, they asked me to order copies for them too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for Boards preparation, October 22, 1998
I've only had a chance to look at this book briefly, but that look was enough to convince me to order it. I know it's divided by subject matter, and takes the form of a long, multiple-choice quiz (like the Boards themselves) with the answers at the end of each chapter. It's great if, like me, you study best by testing yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY a great book/program to help me pass the RVT!!, August 29, 2007
Having graduated at the top of my class and as RVT club president, I was NOT ready to fail the California RVT exam. Alas I did. So then I hit the books...all of them I used in college. Still, failed by only a few, I repeated this process until I tried and failed a total of 4 times. That started in 1999 when I graduated college. For those of you unfamiliar, the CALIFORNIA RVT exam is well known for having a high failure rate, and for being archaic and out of date. You can be a very competent technician and still fail this exam. Its frustrating! My studying for this exam was scattered, and since you dont know what you get wrong or right on the test, I had no idea WHERE my weakness are/were i.e. Pharmacology, Anesthesiology, Physiology etc. WELL NO MORE! I cant tell you how this has helped me identify weaknesses and strengths! I am now studying without worry of passing as this book is exactly what every tech needs to study and pass! Great info, well written, I am learning and relearning better than the first time around in college. WORTH EVERY PENNY!! I bought the review book and read that then make a game of the CD Rom like trivia. NO STRESS or work or worry. Wish I would have had these back in 99!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpfull for the National Exam, July 9, 2005
This book helped a lot when I was studying for the Vet Tech national boards. There were some repeat questions but that wasn't a problem. The questions got you thinking and some of the questions in the book were on the board test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book, July 8, 2007
I think that this book was an excellent study guide for the veterinary techology state and national exams, the tests are extremely hard.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is awkward., November 12, 2008
This book contains a lot of good information, but I find it hard to use as a study guide. It's only useful if you want to take the tests to check how well you're doing. It's very difficult to flip back and forth to check answers as you go. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The third volume in the multimillion copy bestselling series

Readers adored James Herriot's tales of his life as a Yorkshire animal doctor in All Creatures Great and Small and All Things Bright and Beautiful. Now here's a third delightful volume of memoirs rich with Herriot's own brand of humor, insight, and wisdom.

In the midst of World War II, James is training for the Royal Air Force, while going home to Yorkshire whenever possible to see his very pregnant wife, Helen. Musing on past adventures through the dales, visiting with old friends, and introducing scores of new and amusing character--animal and human alike--Herriot enthralls with his uncanny ability to spin a most engaging and heartfelt yarn.

Millions of readers have delighted in the wonderful storytelling and everyday miracles of James Herriot in the over thirty years since his delightful animal stories were first introduced to the world. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem!, October 9, 2002
My first experience with the late James Herriot's inspirational books took place in a bookstore in Singapore, in the 80's. I was barely 14 & had not heard of this writer/vet. But as soon as I started reading All Things Wise and Wonderful - my very first JH book, I knew I had to get the rest of the series.
Through his poignant, funny, sensitive and Yorkshire-accented writing, I relived his world as a practising vet. His was a world where decent, civic minded people lived with much love & respect for their pets and farm animals. A world where I wanted/want to be in.
It is true how one book reviewer put it: every chapter will have you either laughing out loud or shedding a quiet tear. To this day, I still remember some of his stories that touched my heart. The courtship years when a young JH was trying to impress Helen (who eventually became his very supportive wife); the timid little black stray cat, who with her last breath, would placed her one surviving kitten into the hands of a caring family; the endearing 'beggar' dog; the bored, pampered & misunderstood pet dog of a wealthy spinster...I could almost touch and see JH's characters through his vivid writing. I even felt his pride when his daughter also became a vet, & his son a doctor.
I am sorry that there were not more of his wonderful tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would give all of his books more than 5 stars if I could!, September 17, 2003
If you want a book that will take you back to the country life and its people with all their foibles and admirable qualities and love animals then his books will be pure enjoyment! I love the way he tells his stories. In his stories, he doesn't ever claim to be the best veterinarian around (I think he underrated himself), but you know he is a wonderful, kind, animal and people loving person. The way he speaks about the people and animals he comes in contact with, come to life and you feel you are right there with him. You will laugh, maybe cry, and cheer him on as you read. If you have animals, or raise them, you will love his books, although you don't have to own any to appreciate them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another favorite, November 21, 2000
James Harriot has that amazing ability to transport you into his world, take you into his confidence, and offer you his friendship.....all through a series of heartwarming stories taken from his life as a Yorkshire vet. It's so refreshing to read books that are not strewn with violence and sex...yet which captivate your attention. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants some good wholesome entertainment and an occasional chuckle.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful end to a fabulous series of books!, September 5, 2000
I have read each of James Herriot's books many times (including this one) and still enjoy them every time I read them! This book is one of my favorite books of the series, and is highly recommended by me. If you have read the other books you will love this one just as much if not more! If you have not read any of the other books, this book would also be a good one to start off with. After reading it I can assure you that you will want to read all the others. NOTE: I also have all five of these books on audio tape (by Christopher Timothy) and would recommend these as well! It is great to listen to them while you do hobbies since you can actually do two things at the same time, and Christopher Timothy (who played James Herriot in the BBC series) really brings the characters to life, using different voices and accents.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a classic, December 31, 2007
The third book in the series and you know exactly what to expect. Yes, folks, it is every bit as entertaining as the first two, and that's probably all you need to know. But I'll go ahead and mention that he spends some time in the RAF during World War II, which we knew he would as the second book ended. I'll also mention that he and Helen have a baby, which you probably expected. One of the great joys of his writing is discovery, so I'd hate to screw that up with a spoiler, but these two tidbits are on the back cover anyway. Oh, and halfway through it, I predicted an ending in advance, and I only had to read 1000 pages by this guy before that happened. It's still great, great stuff, and you know you'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like animals?, March 6, 2007
If you like animals you will enjoy all James Herriot's books. This is one of a series of delightful books. Reading one will make you want to read the next one. I can read them over and over.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, January 19, 2007
I have the complete series of All Creatures Great and Small books now. This was the last one and I loved it as much as I loved the others. He was a fantastic writer and having been born and raised on a farm I can appreciate a lot of what he talks about. I also have his cat and dog stories books and loved them just as much.

5-0 out of 5 stars wholesome, human, beautifully written, January 4, 2007
I read the Herriot books years and years ago. I learned that my husband had not. So when he needed more "going to sleep" books that could be read in short sections and would let him fall pleasantly to sleep after a few chapters, I ordered all the "Bright and Beautiful, Wise and Wonderful" series for him. After the first bedtime with the first one, he kept it next to him all day, to read just one more chapter when he had a few minutes free. He regales me with some of the tales that I have since forgotten, so I plan to re-read these wonderful snapshots of life, location, people, and animals for myself. They are actually even more refreshing now than when they first delighted me 30 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slips past our defenses and grabs us, January 30, 2005
"Two hours and yards of catgut later, we dusted the patched up peritoneal surface with sulphanilamide and pushed the entire mass back into the abdomen. When I had sutured muscle layers and skin everything looked tidy but I had a nasty feeling... The extensive damage, all that contamination- peritonitis was inevitable.
'He's alive anyway, Tris,' I said as we began to wash the instruments. "We'll put him on to sulphapyridine and keep our fingers crossed." There were still no antibiotics at the time but the new drug was a big advance."

This series is the absolute pinnacle of slice of life stories, and this volume continues the strong precedent set out in his other books.

James Herriot once again relates a score of experiences from his past; in this case, the running theme is his service in the Royal Air Force and the pregnancy of his wife, Helen. As always, Herriot presents us with a lifestyle that we can all envy, despite his self-deprecating asides. He paints a graphic, lovely, and seemingly true-to-life portrait of life in the Scottish Dales.

Herriot is at his best when describing visits to local farms when he does hands-on work under the watchful eyes of the farmers. Their stoicism is always amusing, and the technical details of the veterinary practice of the time are always fascinating. I found the RAF adventures to be a little less engaging, but the book is well worth reading.

Highlights of this book include a depressed man whose dog, Digger, starts to go blind; a sick farmer whose calf has severe stomach problems; and the care of a horribly wounded stray cat that turns out to be rather remarkable.

I didn't read these books in order, and now I wish I had. You can really enjoy all of the stories without any background, but you can probably enjoy Herriot's life a little more if you see him go from newly appointed apprentice to respected top doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars James Herriot: The War Years, November 9, 1998
This book in the series is slightly different, since James is training in the RAF and each chapter starts with his war reality and then dissolves into homesick remembrances of Yorkshire and his animal clients. Still great stuff, though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More Important Than You Can Imagine!, December 29, 2004
I have had a wonderful dog for six years and have learned a lot along the way. I have learned more from this book than I learned in those six years. This book is so important for all pet owners. We need to be prepared to help our pets when they get minor illnesses or have serious medical problems. The book has more than 150 health care topics listed alphabetically. The book is quite easy to read, and by simply turning to a page you will know whether or not you need to call the vet immediately, later, or not at all.

The list of components necessary for a good first aid kit is helpful as well. Also, the book gives a chart of human medicines that can and cannot be used for dogs and cats along with correct dosage.

Even if you do not plan on reading the book all the way through, purchase it and tuck it away on a shelf, because you never know when you may need it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars, August 13, 2003
Excellent book and good for quick reference. Has at home medicines that an animal can and cannot take. I would definately recommend this for any animal lover or owner.

Ms. Shojai has done a wonderful job in this book--with everything the layperson needs to know when something goes wrong with their four-footed companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source, November 7, 2006
I got this book to better care for my adult and senior dogs. I love that the book not only focuses on First Aid but prevention as well as recommendations for when to call the vet. The injuries and illnesses section covers everything you can think of and provides lots of background information as well as treatment. My favorite feature is the recommended medicine chest as well as dosing.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Handy!, August 9, 2006
Now *this* book is worth having, and giving, an buying! Easy languages, tells you whether it's really serious, or just "don't waste money on the vet just now". Help for the unsure and the sure, using household items, by experts! This book made me forget my previous lemon-purchase: one real gem out of two, could be worse :-).

I really recommend it for everybody who wants to give their cat normal everyday good care, without extravaganzas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reading, good addition to your medicine cabinet., February 6, 2007

What do you do? Sure, you can google up an answer, but it's nice to have this book on hand for quick reference.

It is well written and you can actually just read it cover to cover. I learned a lot.

I am really impressed with the wealth of information! It's easy to read, which is important in this sort of book - since the person using it may be under stress at the time, worrying about their sick or injured pal.

As much as we hate to think about it, every owner has to deal with his or her pet's injury or illness. The First Aid Companion for Dogs and Cats can make those times a lot less scary.
