The new 31st Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values by S.P. Fjestad has been expanded to more than 2,300 pages, easily making it the highest page count of any firearms book currently in print. All new 2010 makes and models have been included, plus updated values on discontinued firearms and antiques. Paramilitary rifle values have also been brought up-to-date, reflecting recent major changes resulting from political changes in Washington, D.C. Once again, the 80-page Photo Percentage Grading SystemTM provides high resolution color images that are the last word to help ascertain any firearm s correct condition factor based on the percentage of original condition. Revolvers, pistols, rifles, and shotguns are also shown separately, in addition to NRA Antique Condition Factors.Other sections have also been expanded, including serialization, and the helpful Trademark Index, which lists all pertinent information on many of the world s firearms manufacturers, distributors, and importers. Most of the information contained in this publication is simply not available anywhere else, for any price! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good guide; only lacking photos, November 17, 1999
This book covers an extensive array of firearms and prices for varying conditions. It is an excellent reference. All it needs is photos of the firearm described. There are small variances in many, particularly the Winchesters, that may make them difficult to identify without a photo.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Gun Collectors, March 3, 2002
The Blue Book is the "bible" for those who deal in used firearms.
Whether buying or selling, this is the place to start when setting a price to buy, sell, or bargain with respect to a particular gun. It is comprehensive and user friendly for those who do not engage in this area very often, but it can be well worth the price in terms of over- or underpricing of firearms for sell or purchase. As an added bonus, this edition honors a true American hero on the cover and inside with an interview of Joe Foss, WWII ace and Medal of Honor recipient. I highly recommend it to all dealers, collectors, and other interested persons!

3-0 out of 5 stars Military weapons are low, April 6, 2006
I deal with guns on a daily basis and I refer to this book several times a day. Most of the values listed in the book seem to correspond with the market. However, U.S. military firearms and some of the Colt pistols are listed too low. For collecting purposes the descriptions are too vague. I refer to the many auction sights and specialty dealers on line that list these types of weapons for sale. Some of these dealers are are highly reputable and published authors on US martial weapons. These types of firearms increase in value quickly as the interest in U.S.military history grows. This book does not reflect the rapid increase in value that these guns have made in the past few years. Overall this book is very useful, but when researching the value of a specific military weapon, consult the internet or buy a book.

We, in the Customer Service department for Browning and Winchester, have the most updated copy of the Blue Book of Gun Values at our fingertips. We are always being asked about the year of manufacture and whether we have any other pertinent information on a particular Browning or Winchester gun. The Blue Book allows us to have access to the most recent information available, and we help our customers on the spot. We would not be as efficient if it were not for the Blue Book. We highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in firearms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and Concise. Rely on it before I Buy. Collector, February 17, 1999
When I need to know Manufacture dates and model differences and values I rely on this guide. Covers rare/common and hard to price American and European models. Has a cross Reference for makers and serial # made on dates. Shows the listing of model variations/dates/serial # runs in a series of gun. All one needs is the Gun in hand or complete list of features to determine Model/Type & Era. Each listing has the wording on the barrel of each model it covers to determine the type. No guide can be complete end of story. This gude takes you where you need to be to determine Type and value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, May 5, 2005
Just received my 26th Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values. I use this book to evaluate guns that I am interested in adding to my collection. I am active in several gun collecting societies, and attend many gun shows during the year, but I find it is impossible to stay current on pricing in all the different aspects of what I have interest in acquiring. I have learned over several years of relying on this book as a guide for pricing that it is the most accurate reference available to the collector and dealer. The information is presented in a logical, understandable, and useable format. I have found the pricing to be realistic and up-to-date, and most dealers and collectors will agree on the pricing as a base line in negotiating whether buying, selling, or trading.

Also, I also do some appraisal work for a local company in estate valuation. When thay have gun collections large or small that need appraising, I typically utilize the newest Blue Book of Gun Values as the reference and starting point. The formal pricing presented, whether for insurance or estate valuation, has never been challenged. I highly recommend this publication to all dealers, collectors, and appraisers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better late than never, October 18, 2001
I should have bought one of these (earlier edition) years ago. Now when I sell a firearm and someone says that is too much I can show them the price range. I also use these figures to calculate how much to insure the firearms for and the Insurance Agent checks it also. I will use it at the next gun show and hope it will save me some money from greedy sales-people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gun Show Use, February 17, 2000
I am really impressed with the book and every dealer at a gun show has the Blue Book Of Gun Values

4-0 out of 5 stars The best (book) source on gun values., May 13, 2007
The blue book of gun values is the best publication of it's type. However, it's not perfect. The biggest problem is that many prices in the book simply don't reflect the going rate. This is mainly true for models recently discontinued ~ in the last 2-3 years (for example HK P7 series are WAY off of actual street price) as well as any "assault weapons" that seem to change rates on every rumor of new litigation. So, while it is a good resource, you end up double checking online sites like AuctionArms and Gunbroker to determine price anyway. Also, many gunstores seem to refer to this publivation when buying, but it's strangly absent in their arguments as to why their used stock is priced so high.... That said, it IS the best of what's out in the printed world, so it gets 4 stars in my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Book of Gun Values, 26th Edition (Blue Book of Gun Values), September 7, 2005
Wealth of firearms information dealing primarily with modern firearms, 1900 and some info on mid to late 1800's era production. Helps with identification of model vaiations, values as well as guidelines for grading. Also provides contact information for many manufacturers and collecting associations. A must have for the collector, occasional trader or dealer. Produced and updated annually. TDail

4-0 out of 5 stars Material is generally good..., August 13, 2010
But the editing stinks. I know some people think this is nitpicking, but it's distracting and undermines the reader's faith in the material and enjoyment of reading to regularly see what look like OCR errors (like an exclamation point in place of a lowercase L in the middle of a word) throughout the book. That might just be enough to knock off a star, but it's much worse: I noticed two places where a column break obviously cut off some amount of text. How much? Who knows? It could be a sentence, or it could be ten paragraphs.

Many of the articles are quite good, and they're well chosen: there are articles on all different kinds of hunting, shooting, and collecting topics, and they were good enough to keep my interest even where I had no particular interest in the subject. For the most part, it's just a fun book to sit down and kill an evening with. But the pervasive evidence that nobody cared enough to read the text after it was pasted into the print file definitely hurts the experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Articles, But Short on Semi-Auto Listings, July 29, 2010
Gun Digest is legendary for its Reports From The Field articles. This year's edition does not disappoint in that regard. Also included are a wealth of handy ballistics charts. I did find, however, that the section of listings for semi-auto rifles was very sparse -- nowhere near a comprehensive listing of what's out there on the market. If you buy the Gun Digest to do some armchair shopping for semi-auto rifles, you'll most likely be disappointed. Too bad. If the author was to beef up the firearm listings, Gun Digest could be quite the definitive, comprehensive digest that it comes close to being.

This Story is about a cape buffalo that kills a man so an officer must go find the buffalo and kill it before it kills some one else. To find out the thrilling ending read the book. Another story is Good Morning. This story is about a young kid that shoots his first buck. "This is a exciting and thrilling book. Editorial Review

NOW A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

In the tradition of Sebastian Junger and Linda Greenlaw comes Captain Sig Hansen’s rags-to-riches epic of his immigrant family’s struggle against deadly Alaskan seas, freezing shipwrecks, and dangerously brutal conditions to achieve the American Dream

Sig Hansen has been a star of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch from the pilot to the present. Seen in over 150 countries, the show attracts more than 49 million viewers per season, making it one of the most successful series in the history of cable TV. With its daredevil camera work, unpredictably dangerous weather, and a setting as unforgivable and unforgettable as the frigid Bering Sea, The Deadliest Catch is unlike anything else on television.

But the weatherworn fishermen of the fishing vessel Northwestern have stories that don’t come through on TV. For Sig Hansen and his brothers, commercial fishing is as much a part of their Norwegian heritage as their names. Descendents of the Vikings who roamed and ruled the northern seas for centuries, the Hansens’ connection to the sea stretches from Alaska to Seattle and all the way to Norway. And after twenty years as a skipper on the commercial fishing vessel the Northwestern--which was his father’s before him--Sig has lived to tell the tales.

To be a successful fisherman, you need to be a mechanic, navigator, welder, painter, carpenter, and sometimes, a firefighter. To be a successful fisherman year after year, you need to be a survivor.

This is the story of a family of survivors; part memoir and part adventure tale, North By Northwestern brings readers on deck, into the dockside bars and into the history of a family with a common destiny. Built around a gripping tale of a deadly shipwreck like The Perfect Storm, North By Northwestern is the multi-generational tale of the Hansen family, a clan of tough Norwegian-American fishermen who, through the popularity of The Deadliest Catch, have become modern folk-heroes.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Bravery/Passion/Family Ties
This is an excellent read. If you enjoy the series as much as I do, you will appreciate this book. I had the pleasure of having lunch with Sig last year at Catch Con, and his personality - that of a vivacious and passionate professional, certainly comes forth in this book. This book celebrates this family, back several generations. There is an extradorinary appreciation and respect for hard work, perfection, determination and drive. This family is clearly identified by what they do and do it extremely well - Crab fishing in the deadly Bering Sea.

This book will be an inspiration to those who read it, as a testimony to what a person can achieve when you put your entire self into your passion. Great job, Sig, Edgar, and Norman.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book
If you are a Deadliest Catch fan you will LOVE this book. Sig gives us the history of fishing in Norway back to the vikings and how norwegians came to Seattle and eventually Alaska. There are several story lines in the book, one of the main ones being the story of Sig's father on a boat that was going down. Sig tells not only his family's history but that of himself and his brothers, his father and uncles. He explains in detail how crabbing is done. This book is so interesting that you won't be able to put it down! It is very well written and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!
I received this book today and read it in one sitting, could not put it down. If you enjoy watching Deadliest Catch you will love this book. The book reads just like Sig talks, which is a plus. He takes us back to his roots and explains how he became a fisherman. I HIGHLY recommend this book. Even if you don't watch the show, you will enjoy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Great Writing
This was an exceptional book in many ways. Obviously, Sig Hansen is an incredibly fascinating person. The co-author did an amazing job of putting his stories together in an interesting and easy to follow way. The book really provides great depth in to his personality.

Most of us find Sig to be a bit of an enigma. We have great admiration for his power, work ethic, and bravery, but struggle with his lack of compassion. I think Sig largely communicates the same in this book. It is always pleasing to me when somebody can evaluate themself with some objectivity.

There is a very interesting technical description of the crabbing process and the science of crab as a species. It is just enough information to give the reader a much better grasp of the process without boring them with the details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Captain Sig---What You See Is What You Get
The Deadlist Catch has redefined reality tv for me in a genre populated with a lot of mediocre shows that have a staged feeling. It is the real deal and chronicles the often dangerous and back breaking conditions of fishing for crab in the Bering Sea. Since I have been watching this show from the first season, I have become a real fan of Captain Sig Hansen and his brothers, the Hillstrands, and the late and lamented Captain Phil Harris. This book has only increased my admiration for Sig and the others as Sig details what is involved in fishing for crab in much greater detail than the show manages to do.
As a bonus, the usually stern Sig provides his reader with the history of his family and of norwegian fisherman in general. He takes much pride in the business, his family, and his roots in Norway. The entire effect is that it humanizes the man and explains why he has to run a tight ship with little margin for error.
Written in Sig's voice, one with which I have long been familiar with, is a plus.
While the book is co-authored with a professional writer, this account isn't jazzed up for a book buying audience. It simply tells the story of a family and their experiences fishing. Sig has fishing in his blood. Starting from his teen years (and even earlier)he apprenticed himself and worked his way up the ladder. He has a respect for the sea and understands the dangers inherent in the constant battle between man and nature and the stories he relates are often quite frightening.
This is definitely a must-read for any fan of the show and the captains and crews that choose to do this for a living. This book kicks it up a notch from just what a viewer sees on The Deadliest Catch and provides a fuller picture of what goes on in the crab fishing industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief Comparison of Time Bandit and North by Northwestern
I read both Time Bandit and North by Northwestern, books co-written by captains of crab fishing vessels featured on TV's Deadliest Catch.

Time Bandit was published first and is basically a rambling adventure story. It jumps back and forth in time and between brothers telling the story. Andy's chapters are more philosophical and purposeful than Johnathan's, and also more reserved. The book begins and ends with a story of Johnathan Hillstrand in trouble while salmon fishing and this story is broken up by various tales, facts and details about the Hillstrand family and their jobs, personalities, families, and various adventures. I think the purpose of Johnathan's salmon fishing story was to provide a first-hand quick grab to bring in the reader and provide excitement and tie various pieces of the book together, but I don't think that gimmick totally succeeds here. When that story ends the book, the entire work still feels unfinished to me. However, Time Bandit is still a very interesting, fun, fast read.

North by Northwestern came out a year later than the Time Bandit book, and in many ways seems to copy the Time Bandit. It follows a similar story structure, it uses photos in the same way, and provides similar information, albeit from a different perspective. The "grabber" in North by Northwestern is a story about Sig's father and is more dramatic than Johnathan's, although revealed in less of an in-your-face fashion. A few parts, such as a description of what crabs are and how they live and move around on the ocean floor, is so similar in both books that it seems almost plagiarized.

I personally found North by Northwestern to be much better written than Time Bandit and a more satisfying story over all. Perhaps it succeeds because it is all in the voice of one person instead of two, but I also speculate that Mark Sundeen is a better writer than MacPherson or made a direct attempt to follow MacPherson's model and improve on it. North by Northwestern really seemed to have more of a story to tell, and provided a multi-generational seafaring family saga much more coherently and completely than is found in the somewhat jumbled feel of Time Bandit. Even the pictures in the book were better than Time Bandit's. The end of the book about marketing and branding was one of the weaker parts of the book and read a bit defensively or apologetically, but it did serve to complete the timeline.

I think Time Bandit deserves the credit for doing it first and creating the template that North by Northwestern followed and improved upon. I related more to the Hansen clan than the Hillstrands on many levels, but both books are enjoyable and both families worthy of respect for their hard work. Time Bandit does read more like a pirate's work in typical Hillstrand fashion while North by Northwestern's Norwegian sensibilities are strong. I have some Norwegian ancestry and I came away from North by Northwestern with a better understanding and appreciation of certain family stories from that line of my family tree. The voice of each work is true to the captains. I read both through interlibrary loan and ended up deciding I wanted to purchase North by Northwestern for my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, not at all what I expected
I am a huge fan of the series, with a special fondness for the Northwestern and her crew, so it was inevitable that I read Captain Sig's book. I expected a good read about the captain and crew, but nothing special since the author is a fisherman, not an author. What I found instead was a real treasure; the story of brave and enterprising Norwegian men and women who sought adventure and livelihood in the United States. I read the entire book in one sitting, because the story Sig told of his family and fellow Norwegian-Americans was absolutely riveting. The best part for me was the obvious respect and pride Sig felt about his father, grandfather, and all their companions in the Seattle area. He told the story not just of the Northwestern, but the story of the whole group of Norwegian fishermen who braved the most hostile climate of the Bering Sea to be some of the first to make their living fishing crab. This really is a gem, and I recommend this to anyone interested in American history, whether or not they are fans of the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars North by Northwestern
Excellent book. If you watch the Deadliest Catch show you can imagine Sig talking. Learned a lot about the history of the Alaska crab fisheries. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a proud legacy
North by Northwestern is a stirring tribute to Sig's ancestors, especially his father. Now we know why he and his brothers Edgar and Norman are such fine men. Their tremendous work ethic, compassion, and humility were instilled in them by Sverre and Snefryd Hansen. It is this genuine spirit of appreciation that permeates the book and makes it a satisfying read.

The book succeeds in telling us more than the incredible documentary series. Science, maritime history, even spirituality are woven into this skillful tale. We are swept along by the gripping saga of the sinking of Sverre Hansen's steel boat the Foremost, which is threaded throughout the book. He leaves a proud legacy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book every fisher should own, May 11, 2006
Two things jumped at me the moment I began to read "What Fish Don't Want You to Know " The Author Frank P. Baron not only knows the in and out of fishing he is also passionate about it. The other thing that jumped at me is that the book is written in an easy to understand language and with humour. Unlike many other books covering this subject, this book is actually very entertaining and full of common sense wisdom that only can come from years of fishing.

Let me say it right here if you look for any "secrets" or a "sure fire strategy" to catch more or bigger fish then this is the wrong book for you. But then again, we all know there are no secrets for fishing success other than spending time on the lakes and streams and learning about the fish. It is exactly here where this book shines. In my opinion, this book should find a home in every fishers bookshelf. The novice fisher will learn from the book what it takes to become a successful fisher and what equipment is needed. While the seasoned fisher will find this book invaluable for information to refresh his knowledge. Any way you look at it this is a book any fisher should own or to be given as a present to a fisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational guide on fishing, August 17, 2005
If you enjoy fishing and you're looking for some simple tips to improve your odds, this book is likely going to help you out. The Author is very entertaining and makes reading easy. Several of the chapters are very applicable no matter where you live or what type of freshwater fish you are trying to bag.
I learned a lot by reading this book, and I have been fishing consistently for 20 years. I always thought I was a good fisherman and could read holes well in a stream to find fish, or find them in a Lake. Frank Baron taught me a lot more than I thought I could learn. From basic things like how to properly bait up a worm, to fishing jigs in the weeds or likely spots for finding walleye on the bottom of a lake.
The author goes over several aspects of fishing from a boat, and from shore.
Again I really enjoyed the author's abundant humor throughout the book. Sounds like a fun guy to go fishing with. One thing I will add to my tackle, as per the author's recommendation, is a PRIEST. What's a priest? Read the book and find out. If you enjoy fishing you will enjoy reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even If You Don't Fish..., October 3, 2003
This is not only an attractive, extremely well-presented and well-executed guide to the basics (and beyond) of freshwater fishing, but also a warm and humorous visit to the sport and the humans who love it. The unassuming but effective and informative photos of personal real-life fishing experiences convey perfectly what it means to be among the millions who find fishing a highly rewarding way to connect to the planet in all its earthy reality.Environments, situations, tackle and techniques are also represented handsomely with additional photos and stylish illustrations. The text is sprinkled with engaging "Not So Tall Tales" from a lifetime of outdoor life. The information supplied is more than comprehensive, without becoming overwhelming or confusing. All the crucial keys are here to not only catching more fish, but also to enjoying fishing more, even if they don't happen to be biting. But the major asset here is the unpretentious, down-home intelligence and humor of the author, who proves genuinely entertaining and highly skilled at both of his crafts. Refined and pleasurable approaches to outdoor life are tastefullly and lovingly presented, and never overstated. For the essential basics of freshwater fishing, and for a reliable reminder that outdoor sports are first and foremost meant to be fun, you could literally get everything you need from just this one book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent "How To" Book for the Weekend Warrior Fisherman, September 16, 2003
This is an excellent book for the average fresh water fisherman. And the humorous stories mixed throughout the book add to the reading pleasure. As someone who spends a few weeks worth of days fishing for bass, walleye and trout every year, there were numerous tips that should help me improve my results. For instance, the author's tips on how to effectively fish weed beds, including what lures to use so that you can attract the fish without attracting the weeds caught my interest, as I have typically avoided this water, even though I know the bass don't! I also recently tried out the author's suggestions for catching walleye, and found his techniques absolutely improved my results.
I would definitely recommend this book to any beginner, or average to above average fresh water fisherman. It's a good read, full of lots of funny as well as true (if you believe the author!) fishing stories, and I found a lot of useful tips mixed in throughout the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, December 31, 2006
One might think that there would be a spectrum of introductory fishing books running from lengthy books dense with information to shorter books with less information but still reasonably useful. I have not found that to be the case until now. This is a short and sweet introduction to fishing that still somehow manages to be well rounded. The book covers, probably as painlessly as is possible, almost all the topics one needs to know something about in order to experience some fun and success as a fisherman. I think that says a lot for the book.

The tone of the book is what one might describe as jovial, but I was not laughing at any time while reading this book. Many fishing books have a special area where they excel; for this book, it is the topic of fishing vests. I appreciated that because often it is the small logistical matters that don't get discussed in fishing introductions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Stuff to Get You Going, February 17, 2008
Before I bought this book, I've been fishing about 8-10 times. I really don't care for fishing because I'm so bad at it. But this year I decided to give it a try again but this time I wanted to research the sport instead of going out there like clueless. To get me started, I bought two fishing books: this one and another rather thick book.

What I like about this book is that it gives you the most important info you need to make you a decent fisherman. For now, I don't want a book that gives me a PhD in fishing. I just want to have a decent clue when going out, and that's exactly what this book did for me. It's not at the Dummy level nor is it at the pro-fisherman level either... right in the middle where I wanted things. Meanwhile, my other thick book sits there collecting dust. Maybe I'll get to that other book sometime, but for now this book has given me enough to try out for several outings.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Fish Don't Want You to Know, June 18, 2004
A great read. The author's kind enough to avoid the "techy" scribbling that's been rampant in recent fishing articles and books. His anecdotal sidebars are funny and insightful. It really teaches you to fish better, and without running out and spending your rent money on more tackle.

5-0 out of 5 stars There should be some frightened fish out there now..., September 9, 2003
This is the best book of it's kind I've read. The author uses a lot of common sense and he doesn't make you feel like you need to spend big bucks on gear. It also has really nice touches of humor. You can really tell this guy loves to fish, loves his surroundings, and loves to write. This book will make a great gift and improve my "luck". I hope Frank Baron keeps writing and gets some well deserved recognition. Buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to learn and laugh, February 25, 2006

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent fishing guide., December 14, 2005
This was a really useful guide that helped me with my fishing skills. I didn't understand all of the author's descriptoins, but many of the techniques actually did help me catch more fish. I didn't find the priest very useful, though. ... Read more

I'm sold on this waterproof plastic card concept. Great knot illustrations, too. Amazon.com also sells this author's ROPE KNOTS printed on plastic cards - just do a search for PROKNOT and you'll get 14 essential rope knots on a 6 page waterproof plastic fan pack. I keep both on my boat but could just as well use the PROKNOT cards for camping or tying stuff on the car. These cards rock!

    Editorial Review

Amateur or expert, every angler dreams of landing "the big one," but that's only part of the appeal of fly fishing. Because even when hours pass without a bite, nothing beats the rugged beauty of the surroundings. For both armchair travelers and avid lovers of the outdoors, who may have already started a checklist of their own, Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die maps out the meccas of the fly-fishing world. Through in-depth interviews with the sport's acknowledged gurus, author Chris Santella goes beyond standard guides to convey the very essence of the recommended locations. Readers can vicariously cast mouse patterns to fifty-pound taimen in the wilds of Mongolia, wrangle with wily permit off the Florida Keys, and match the hatch on Montana's Armstrong's Spring Creek. Jardines de la Reina, Cuba (tarpon), the Zhupanova River, Kamchatka (rainbow trout), and the Rio Negro, Brazil (peacock bass) are also included. The essays include a cultural and natural history of each site, along with colorful anecdotes based on the author's and authorities' experiences. With breath-takingly-beautiful photos of the spots, many by celebrated fly-fishing photographer R. Valentine Atkinson, the book also provides adventurous anglers with enough travel-and-tackle information so that they, too, can start planning excursions to go fish around the globe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beatiful places, March 9, 2006
nice book, but i would like to see more pictures of the different species!! also some maps to locate some places would be great...I live in argentina and the 3 places chosen are great, although you must be a millionaire to fish rio grande!! Fortunately we still have a lot of places here to fish for free.
I would rather see a book where they tell where to fish and spent little money (as an example the book tells you that i f you want to fish rio traful, the only way to do it is going to arroyo verde lodge and thats no true!! you can do it for free if you want..there are accesses by foot or you can reach it by the lake, an there are other private places much more cheaper, but why they dont describe that??). Do not tell me where i can go spending $ 5000 a week because its obvious i could go everywhere with that money!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the Rich Fishing Addict, August 28, 2005
If you have unlimited funds and time this book provides the backbone for a lifetime of fishing trips to exotic locales. Initially I bought the book as a gift for a flyfishing addict but it was such a great read that I ended up buying a second book for myself. The photography is outstanding and so far I've visited 2 of the places in the book and they both ranked as the top trips I'veever taken. 2 down and 48 more to go!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars So many places, so little time..., October 21, 2005
I was expecting to read location related fishing stories written by experienced anglers and was a little bit dissapointed to realize the interview based approach. There seems to be no real feelings in these short texts. Additionally, being a big fan of Mr. Atkinson's art, the size of the book really puts some strict constraints to his photos. Unfortunately.

Having said the above, I have to admit, that I don't regret the purchase of the book. I think that every actively travelling fly fisherman should have it. There is a lot of very valuable information in it, although, quite strongly biased in favor of the USA.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, June 13, 2004
I was drawn to this book by the beautiful photo on the cover. While I am not a flyfisher, I enjoy the outdoors and camping near rivers and lakes. I absolutely loved all the photos, and the exquisite descriptions of the surroundings. I bought the book for my flyfisher son-in-law, but decided to buy another for myself to enjoy. The flyfisher in your life is certain to appreciate this timeless book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef, Er Trout?, November 24, 2006

This is a beautiful book, one that is smartly designed and packaged, pleasant to leaf through and to handle, but somewhat lacking in substance.

Here's an example of the kind of lapse that would have been caught had the book been written for hard core fisherpeople. We read, "The South Island of New Zealand is awash with beauty and teeming with trout". And then a few sentences later, "The South Island trouting experience is certainly one of quality rather than quantity. A majority of the rivers simply don't support large numbers of fish. Some of the most fishy-looking water you can imagine may not contain a single fish".

So is the South Island "teeming with trout" or is it not?

Ultimately it doesn't really matter. This isn't a book about information - it's a wonderful collection of vicarious fishing trips. I'd never flicked a fly rod when I got it, yet I was engrossed, transported, and in the end captivated.

The settings range from intimate, "Brown Trout on Letort Spring Run", to grand, "Steelhead on the Dean River". Along the way we encounter tarpon, bonefish, snook, pike, redfish, all manner of salmon and trout, and even something known as a giant trevally that lurks in the waters off Christmas Island.

And the photographs are stunning. I only wish there were one for every destination.

Recommended to wile away a winter's afternoon while waiting for the ice to break.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die, June 25, 2004
I boutht this book for my father for Father's Day and he hasn't let it out of his sight since. He has read it cover to cover at least twice. Pictures beautiful and descriptions detailed. I think he is making his reservations for next year on Christmas Island. He was with us the week I gave it to him and he told everyone about the book. What a buy! I will have to get another copy if I want to read it -- it definitely will not be passed on throughout the rest of us fly fishermen in the family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the Adventurer, June 3, 2004
Although by no means a seasoned fly-fisher, I was drawn to this book as a catalyst for dreams about future excursions to locations remote, exotic, and even intimidating. The author sets the stage for 50 fascinating road trips that would likely be unmatched in their combination of fishing challenge and natural beauty. I can imagine anglers will be racing to complete the circuit of destinations for years to come.

The author provides helpful fishing info for the true enthusiast (much of it over my head), but also adds a captivating flavor for each location's surroundings, including lodging tips. The photography is quite beautiful, too.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable reference. Maybe the next edition will include golf courses, too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Many errors, November 14, 2010
I received this book only a couple of days ago and I've only scanned sections of it. Already, it is apparent this book is poorly edited and full of errors that even one with only a narrow range of fireams experience (such as myself) will notice. There are significant omissions, incorrect descriptions, inverted captions to photographs and inclusions of firearms that have been discontinued long ago. This is something I've come to expect from publishers of firearms books--sloppy, lazy work by people who don't seem to really care about informing their audience. But don't expect "Gun Digest" to be any better. Virtually every book I've ever bought from the Gun Digest people has had even worse editing.

C'mon, folks. It may not be easy to publish annual reports on ever-changing subjects. But some simple editing of details would be so easy if you really gave a damn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money, December 8, 2010
The 102nd edition is very disappointing as it is at least three years outdated. We wanted to read about 327 Federal mag ballistics and this gun is not even mentioned in the book and it has been out at least three years now.

I have had one of these on hand for years and the latest volume is what I have come to expect. It is a good reference for newer model firearms with msrps and other vital stats. It also lists some of the brand new products available. A good book to show the highlights of what is on the market.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK for reference, December 1, 2010
I bought this book, and find I hardly ever refer to it. The Internet has so much more information about anything imaginable, books like this are fast becoming outmoded. There are far too many guns to cover in a single book to give much attention to a one entry. On the other hand, it is fun to flip through and see some guns you may not have thought about before.
15 years ago I would have loved this book. Now, it doesn't serve my purpose - information, fast, more in depth about a particular gun. You may see this in a different light if you don't watch YouTube videos about guns or research articles and forums. But then why would you be reading this?

5-0 out of 5 stars The best place to start, July 5, 2008
This is the book I used when I got started reloading about 10 years ago, and this book gave me just what I needed. When I first got the itch to load my own ammunition, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and terminology involved in this fascinating field/hobby. It was very difficult to take all the individual pieces of information that I had and form it into an understandable process. I was snowed in under a blizzard of data that I was piecing together through chat rooms and web sites. Everyone was very helpful - basically shooters are the most helpful people I know - but still I was just getting fragments without a solid, complete overview. Phrases like "roll crimp", "seating and sizer dies," and "headspace" came at me in a blizzard. I could look up each phrase, understand each one as a piece, but still the whole picture was fuzzy. In essence, that is what this book will do for you: turn it all into a coherent, linear whole. The writing is very solid and clear, the illustrations are well done and helpful, and the information is very complete. After reading this book, the entire process made sense to me, and more importantly, I was fully warned about the does and don'ts of the reloading world. The coverage is very complete. Primers, powders, bullets and cases are explained with regard to nomenclature and history. All necessary tools and accessories are discussed and explained. This is just a great book. It won't make you an expert (only actual reloading for years will do that), but it will put you on the right road if you wish to become one. --Mykal Banta

5-0 out of 5 stars Information you'll find nowhere else, April 16, 2009
I've been reloading for about 15 years for everything from practical pistol to NRA highpower, hunting loads for military surplus guns and everything in between. I have the reloading manuals put out by reloading equipment manufacturers (such as Lyman and Lee) as well as those put out by powder and bullet manufacturers (e.g. Speer, Accurate). So compared to a beginner, I am a fairly advanced reloader. Nevertheless, I always want to know more, get new ideas, and so forth.

This book is comprehensive in that it puts forth a great deal of information relevant to reloading rifle, pistol and shotgun. But it doesn't just cover the basics -- it also goes into a great deal of depth on subjects not covered in other reloading manuals.

One example is one of the most perplexing questions facing a new handloader: when the powder manufacturer gives a particular "starting" and "maximum" load for a given bullet weight, and the bullet manufacturer gives different information ... whose do you use?

This book also describes practically every imaginable piece of equipment you might want, goes into important detail about concepts such as "headspace" and includes specific advice for handloading for different purposes such as big game hunting or varminting.

I recommend this book highly for both beginning and experienced reloaders. For beginners, it will allow you to start with a level of knowledge that would ordinarily take years to acquire. For more experienced reloaders, it gives valuable information on the peculiarities of some of the new cartridges and bullet offerings.

This book is well worth its price and then some -- it belongs on your bookshelf if you are considering reloading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic knowledge, June 4, 2008
This book came highly recommended by members of a forum on reloading. I was not disappointed. I will recommend it myself. The book covers the bases and is easy to read. You will need to add other books to your library, ( such as load data for specific calibers ) but this is a very good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, but still not rudimentary enough, February 13, 2010
Why do I give this book 4 stars, but still give a critical statement about it in the title of my review. Well, for starters, this book is written in magazine style as I call it. The author typically puts out a lot of information in the style of a magazine article. What this means is that as problems crop up, you are ushered to a purchasable solution at your local store. Why is this NOT a good writing style, because it costs you unnecessary money and shows a gross lack of thought and research on the part of the author. It is almost like the author did a lot of research, but has not had a lot of practical experience on the subject that he writes about.

What I did not like about the book at hand was that it recommended full length resizing of the cartridge casing (fine if you are using it in an automatic rifle, NOT necessary at all if you are using a bolt action rifle). Full length resizing stresses the cartridge too much, compared to neck sizing it. This leads to premature cartridge casing failure (if you do not periodically ANNEAL the cartridge case neck) Annealing is NEVER mentioned in the book. What the author recommends is full length cartridge case resizing, no annealing, inspect casing for damage, discard damaged (which could have been prevented by ANNEALING). Thanks, more stuff to BUY. Us old guys neck size cartridges and anneal them every 4th or 5th loading to preserve our brass. BUY is a word used by marketing driven magazine writers, NOT old reloaders who know their stuff. Further more, Once a cartridge is fired in a rifle it has had its headspace perfectly adjusted for that gun. Just neck size it and periodically anneal it by standing the cases up in a pan of water and heating the neck red hot before knocking them over. Then deprime, neck size, reprime and reload them. Cases can last a lot longer and shoot a lot more accurately if this procedure (not mentioned in the book) is followed.

In the books defense, it is a decent read and will give you a lot of good information about reloading your own bullets.

    Happy reading, Darian Paganelli

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best book on reloading available, November 13, 2008
Now I believe over the years the editor of this book has changed. I have a 6th edition. Chapters in the book are written by different authors, however, the editors did a wonderful job of putting together information that will make you feel a lot more confident about reloading.

The book covers everything from casting bullets, to the differences of powders. And since it is not about just one companies products, suggestions like the homemade powder dipper, abound. It also explains such facts as why working out your own loads for your own guns will give you better accuracy. And gives an in-depth look at how to tell if a bullet case is bad and shouldn't be used. And it is much more readable than a manual.

I also recommend getting a copy of Learn Handgun & Rifle Reloading in Under 41 Minutes: 2007 Edition. This is the only video I've found that covers every step in the reloading process, so you can see what the manuals are talking about. With both the book and the video you'll not only understand what you are doing but know exactly how to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source of INformation for the Newbie, March 29, 2009
I had no knowledge about reloading until I got this book. I was planning on loading my own cartridges since my vintage P08 Parabellum pistol is rather picky when it comes to ammunition, but I had no idea how much is involved. This book gave me a good basic education in the field of reloading and is easy enough to read that even the newcomer can understand it. I highly recommend it.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Reloader's Bible, March 26, 2009
I read the ABC's of reloading to learn about reloading shotshells and pistol ammunition. It is a great book, well written with lots of info and great pictures. I will read it again and again, and it will be used as a reference book as well. This book is a must have for anyone starting to reload, or as a reference for anyone who has reloaded for years. This is truly the bible of reloading.

The Author served as reloading expert for the NRA for years. The book is written with a "safety first" format. The author keeps newbies out of trouble with pictures of reloading gone bad.

This book will save you a lot of grief, by learning from others mistakes, rather than your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for experts and beginners alike - great gift idea, November 24, 2008
I could tell that Massad Ayoob's THE GUN DIGEST BOOK OF CONCEALED CARRY was going to be a good read when I saw the first photo of the first chapter: it showed how one should handle getting a hug while carrying a concealed firearm. This sort of practical and useful information is what fills this book. I own other books on carrying concealed firearms, but this is the first one I've seen that was able to do an authoritative and exhaustive catalog of the things that need to be considered. I've been carrying for more than two decades, and I am impressed with this book.

Gun Digest did the right thing in getting Massad Ayoob to author this book. Ayoob is a police officer, competitive shooter and trainer who is also a master writer and riveting storyteller. As an individual licensed to carry a concealed firearm, I've been reading his informative columns and books since the `80s. As a criminal defense lawyer, I'm familiar with the high esteem in which the Bar holds Ayoob as an expert witness on such matters. His training is held in high regard by the firearms community, and he has designed holsters and other police gear that have been very favorably received. Ayoob's ability to precisely and accurately communicate legal information to lay people is renowned - and it's certainly on display in this book. I can't think of a better author for this book.

Ayoob's 254-page THE GUN DIGEST BOOK OF CONCEALED CARRY covers a breadth of subject area that I would have found intimidating to contemplate. Fortunately, it appears that his decades of training police and civilians in firearms matters well prepared him for the task. The book, well illustrated with hundreds of clear black and white photos, begins with an overview of considerations that come with carrying a concealed firearm, as well as thoughts about why concealed carry might be something that would be helpful to a given woman or man. Ayoob then delves in some detail into the legal considerations of where, how and what to carry, modifications, ammunition, etc. He discusses when deadly force can legally be used, illustrating and fleshing out his points with true stories to keep it interesting, but always carefully writing in such a way that accurate information is conveyed. The author is always cautious to ensure that he recommends the safest legal course of action to his readers. There's no macho loudmouthing here - Ayoob is thoughtful and precise in his discussions of legal matters . . . and the subject warrants no less.

The practical matters of what might best suit an individual for carry are delved into in great detail, all illustrated with photos of different women and men of different builds - really demonstrating the points under discussion. Ayoob mentions small but vital considerations that most folks only learn after years of carry. Sitting down with THE GUN DIGEST BOOK OF CONCEALED CARRY gives the reader access to a master's knowledge of how to select a wardrobe for concealed carry, which defensive loads to use, the dangers of overpenetration, the advantages and disadvantages of every type of carry option and well-illustrated tips on the use of such. Open carry and IDPA competition are given consideration as well.

This book is not about how to shoot or how to select a carry gun for a given individual's needs: Ayoob's well-received 2007 sister volume, THE GUN DIGEST BOOK OF COMBAT HANDGUNNERY, provides guidance in these areas. While I've referred new shooters to the COMBAT HANDGUNNERY book, I believe the new 2008 GUN DIGEST BOOK OF CONCEALED CARRY is perhaps more even more vital for them to own. I would recommend that anyone who considers carrying a handgun add both of these books to their library. While they would provide an unbelievable education for a newbie, a veteran concealed carrier will find great and valuable information in them as well.

I have given copies of Ayoob's COMBAT HANDGUNNERY book as gifts to shooter friends, and you can bet that I will be buying copies of this new CONCEALED CARRY book to supplement these gifts. I don't know a defensive handgun shooter who would not derive some benefit from this book, and I'll be ordering some for friends and family members. Amazon has a pretty astonishing price on this book, by the way, at about 35% off the cover price that you'll find in your neighborhood bookstore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great single volume reference, December 31, 2008
I have known the author of The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry for about ten years now, and also know several of the people mentioned and pictured in this book. Reading through it felt like attending an extended lecture from one of Mas's classes at the Lethal Force Institute. I have personally taken a number of those classes and thought I would have a strong feeling of "been there, heard that" reading this book, but instead found myself either learning or remembering something important in almost every chapter. You might expect this book to feel like an advertisement for the latest whiz-bang product from some company advertising in a gun magazine. Not so. Rather, it is a compiliation of Mas's fifty odd years of carrying firearms for self protection, and over thirty years teaching this material to others. Reading it feels like sitting down for drinks and an extended Q&A session with the author.
The chapters are laid out in a logical fashion such that the reader should just start at page one and continue until the end of the book. Too often, books in this category are set out in a pick and choose format, where the reader needs to look at the table of contents or an index to find something relevant. With Concealed Carry, just start reading and continue learning until you hit the back cover.
Mas starts with why people carry firearms, and the lifestyle choices and changes that such a decision will require. Once he has helped get your mind right about the concept, he moves on to choosing firearms and ammunition for self defense. The firearms he recommends are those he has shot, or seen work in law enforcement, shooting classes, and competition. The primary need in a defensive firearm is reliability. Mas shows that you don't have to spend thousands on a custom firearm in order to achieve this. Most firearms shown are off-the-shelf items from your local gun shop with only tritium sights or laser grips added for night use. He only recommends those which work, and which he has used.
Once you have picked out a firearm, you'll need a holster. Mas goes through them by type, including strong side hip, inside waist band, cross draw, shoulder, pocket, and ankle holsters, among others. He goes through the advantages and disadvantages of each, and explains situations where one choice might be better than another. Just like with the firearms, Mas tells the reader which holsters he has used and which work for him. By virtue of having taught thousands of people over the years, Mas also explains what works for different body types that do not necessarily work for him. Many instructors fall into the trap of "what works for me must work for you too." Not Mas. He freely acknowledges that his style of carry may not work for women, large males, those who spend lots of time seated, etc. The holster chapters are extensive and well written. They also allow the readers to obtain information as to what will work best for them. I would advise anyone considering purchasing a "one size fits all" type nylon holster at a gun show to put that same money into this book and learn what works and what doesn't.
Once Mas has the reader squared away as to attitude, hardware, and holsters, he then moves on to the final two topics: clothing and practice. Those who carry learn how to dress around the firearm so as to keep it out of sight in public. Most people do not want to see non law enforcement officers carrying firearms openly in most states. Some hard headed gunnies refuse to acknowledge this. Mas explains the harm that can result from ignoring this fact. He has a whole chapter on clothing choices specifically designed to keep self defense firearms concealed. When you carry firearms for self defense, eventually you learn to dress around the gun. This book will jump start the process.
Most people who carry firearms for self defense will take only one training class, usually the one to get the license, if even that. Mas explains the perils which can befall someone who chooses to carry only some of the time, or not practice the skills needed to draw and reholster a firearm in a self defense situation. He is a big proponent of competition in order to help develop those skills, including IPSC/USPSA, NRA Action Pistol (Bianchi Cup), and especially IDPA matches. The irony of the situation is that those who carry on a daily basis, train with professional instructors, and regularly compete with firearms become less likely to need those skills the better they get.
I rank this book as a "must read" along with In The Gravest Extreme, by the same author. For about the same cost as a box of premium self defense ammunition (useful) or a gun show special holster (not useful), get this book and read it cover to cover. It answers lots of questions about concealed carry and is the next best thing to actually taking a class from Massad Ayoob.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally evidence of what we've heard as "true", December 6, 2008
Mas does it again. Everyone who carries has heard an opinion of "carry reloads" or "carry factory" for ammo - not to mention every other opinion for carry purposes. Mas (Massad Ayoob - Principal of Lethal Force Institute) goes through not only logical reasons, but when appropriate he documents court cases for everything he suggests. This includes types of carry guns, ammo choices, holster choices, acceptable levels of caliber, methods of weapons presentation, etc. Tom Gresham said it right - this book is and will be an instant classic for those who choose to carefully and legally exercise their rights under the 2nd Amendment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff to Know, March 6, 2010
Ayoob has been carrying weapons and writing about self defense with firearms longer than most of us have been alive. I recently decided to carry a concealed weapon since I live in a state where it is allowed. We have long had weapons around our home for home defense, but with things as they are these days, carrying a concealed weapon sounded better and better.

Not knowing much about it, I wanted to read whatever I could, and literally everyone I spoke to who knew anything about it referred me to Ayoob.

The book is a little dated - especially some of the photos - but the information is virtually timeless. Ayoob writes in a conversational style that makes it easy to read and understand. This book will give you a decent introduction to the topic.

NOTE: No book, no matter how good, can take the place of hands-on instruction with your own weapon. Get this book and read it if you are considering carrying a concealed weapon; but ALSO be SURE to sign up for a professionally-taught course on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, November 15, 2008
This book is honest and full of the answers to hundred of questions I had about carrying a firearm for self defense. Having met the author, I can tell you that this is like having the guy with you, explaining little tidbits of his accumulated knowledge and experiences. This is a must have for anyone who has or is contemplating personal defense precautions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, October 11, 2008
For those that have a concealed carry license or thinking about getting one, this is a must read. This book contains expert advice and tactics that you should learn and use on a daily basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Massad Ayoob's Latest Book, October 15, 2008
As a long time reader of Massad Ayoob's writings I am always pleased with the way he can take information which he has presented before and present it in an informative, entertaining manner. There is not much that is "new" here but the presentation allows the reader to look at the familiar in a new way. I loaned my copy of "Concealed Carry" to a friend who is a concealed carry instructor and highly experienced shooter; he ordered his own copy after finishing reading the book. I think that that action speaks highly of the quality of Massad Ayoob's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for the CCW Holder, January 24, 2009
Excellent book! Mr. Ayoob's writing style and advice are the best in the business. This book details everything about concealed carry including the BUG - Back Up Gun. I had been thinking about a backup gun for a little while and after reading this book, I purchased a S&W 642 Airweight revolver and then a Galco ankle holster. It's excellent.

Massad includes information on guns and defense ammo and I like that he goes through the many different types of holsters including pocket and ankle and how to draw from them. He also discusses the controversial open carry issue and often refers to "don't frighten the horses" when referring to concealed carry - I like that, he's right on the money!

While the chapter on IDPA was ok and he's a proponent of it, I particularly don't like the 'competition' side of CCW. I carry for defense, not competition. My defense gun doesn't have special sights or trigger jobs (which can get you into trouble - and he mentions this) and I'm not afraid to throw it into the dirt.

One thing I love about Massad's books is the real world experience he brings to his books, including this one. His 'final thoughts / advice" is alone worth the price of the book!

As an NRA Pistol Instructor and long time CCW holder, I highly recommend this book - You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information and reference manual, October 20, 2008
Another well-written and informative book in the Ayoob series. This is good reading for anyone who wants to or already does carry a concealed pistol. It is extremely important to be well informed about carry and this book is loaded with good information from a respected source.
It is an enjoyable and easy read. You will come back and reread portions as helpful reminders.

4-0 out of 5 stars almost complete, March 11, 2010
A learnt a lot from this book about concealed carry techniques, holsters, limitations ,tactics. Overall a must read. My only complaint, and the reason behind the 4 stars and not 5, is that it would have been very useful to show with more photos and of better quality the various holsters mentioned in the text. It is confusing sometimes to distinguish between the various alternatives, many of which are not showed in the pics. A good work overall, but lacking some useful pics on many occasions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!, November 21, 2008
I recently purchased this book with the predictably lame excuse "Well, you can never learn enough about deer hunting!" but in all honesty it was because I think so well of the author's writing over the years. I have to say that the book exceeded even my unreasonably high standards!

There really are 500 deer hunting tips, collected by category (stand hunting, tracking, etc.), many of which I had not heard of before. I believe most every hunter will learn a thing or two from this book, and will give it a place of honour among their favourite hunting resource & reference books.

For those of us who like beautiful pictures in our hunting books (I like ambience too) you'll be pleased to hear that I found many pictures...all of them eye-catching and from different eras of deer hunting. Pictures are also strategically placed and captioned to illustrate a point or two made by the author on that particular page.

I read this book through over a weekend, and then read it through twice again in the following weeks. The enjoyment hasn't waned with exposure, so I think you'll find value in this book.

I cannot recommend this book enough!

    Kurt.

I have been deer hunting for 10 years, but my luck at finding deer was much like a crap shoot. I wanted a book that could really teach me the basics as if I was brand new to the sport - THIS BOOK DOES THAT. It is an excellent primer for learning the "how's" and "why's" to deer hunting. In short, little tibits, the author covers scouting tactics, deer's preferences regarding: food sources, cover, terrain, bedding, travel routes, vegetation edges, sanctuaries, weather patterns, etc... I found alot of valuable information. When I think back to the times I saw deer in a specific spot (but didn't know why) I NOW have the answers of why the deer were there. For the price, you can't beat it. It's a bargain - jammed with alot of information!!! If you follow half of the information in this book - your odds of bagging a deer should double or triple.

Fishing is an activity designed to create unusual stories and yes, examples of hyperbole. But unlike the ordinary fishy stories, these incredible fish tails (pun intended) are true - and incredible. Even if fishing isn't your thing, the stories remain highly entertaining and will often leave the reader shaking their head in amazement.

    Editorial Review

Anders Halverson provides an exhaustively researched and grippingly rendered account of the rainbow trout and why it has become the most commonly stocked and controversial freshwater fish in the United States. Discovered in the remote waters of northern California, rainbow trout have been artificially propagated and distributed for more than 130 years by government officials eager to present Americans with an opportunity to get back to nature by going fishing. Proudly dubbed “an entirely synthetic fish” by fisheries managers, the rainbow trout has been introduced into every state and province in the United States and Canada and to every continent except Antarctica, often with devastating effects on the native fauna. Halverson examines the paradoxes and reveals a range of characters, from nineteenth-century boosters who believed rainbows could be the saviors of democracy to twenty-first-century biologists who now seek to eradicate them from waters around the globe. Ultimately, the story of the rainbow trout is the story of our relationship with the natural world—how it has changed and how it startlingly has not.

This book blew me away. Incredible storytelling, amazing history. I'll never look at trout the same way again. If you like to fish or have any interest at all in environmental history and our relationship with the natural world, this book is a must read. I'd highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read, March 5, 2010
Sometime within the past ten years or so I became interested in native fish. I have nothing against any species, I just like to see fish that are "supposed" to be in a watershed, in that watershed, not some other species occupying that water. This desire to find native species in their native range has taken my fishing buddy and me to some out-of-the-way little creeks--we're talking about places in the middle of the desert 100 miles from the nearest town. Creeks whose widths are measured in inches, not feet. But it doesn't seem to matter where we go, how far away from "civilization" we get, we still come across water stocked with non-native species. Many of these places were stocked long before motorized travel was possible. And I've wondered what possessed people to stock fish in such places.

Anders Halverson's new book, An Entirely Synthetic Fish: How Rainbow Trout Beguiled America and Overran the World, answers that question for me. In a fascinating look at the social and political maneuverings of the late nineteenth century through the present, Anders' meticulous research lays bare some interesting tidbits of the stocking policies of the United States.

One such gem is that the government was worried about the strength of the nation's men: that they had "notoriously less hardihood and endurance than the generation which preceded [their:] own" (George Perkins Marsh, congressman and diplomat from the mid-1800's). This description was given in a report by Marsh under the auspices of the Legislature of Vermont on the Artificial Propagation of Fish. He further stated that "the sports of the chase" (angling being one of them) was a way to increase the hardiness of the Americans. At this time, many waterways were already seeing a decline in fish numbers and the artificial propagation of fish was seen as a way to increase those numbers. With the urge to increase the robustness of its men, and the decline fish population the underpinnings were there for the introduction of non-native species.

Last year Eccles (from the Turning Over Small Stones blog) and I had a discussion about the terms "Fish and Game" and "Fish and Wildlife" as used in various agencies: Why were the terms "fish" and "game" separate? Shouldn't it just be Game or Wildlife, as in "Utah Game" or "US Wildlife Service" since fish are a type of game and fish are a type of wildlife? Anders informs us that by the 1870s congress formed the United States Fish Commission to help tackle the problem of declining fish stocks, thus becoming the first governmental agency involved with animal husbandry in the US. At a later time, the "game" and "wildlife" were added as the agency expanded. So, in my mind at least, this solves the mystery.

How the rainbow trout became the darling of the US Fish Commission, and just about every other angling agency in the world, is an interesting tale that Anders starts in San Francisco in 1872 with Livingston Stone looking for spawning salmon. He eventually found the McCloud River and began propagating salmon. By 1879 they were looking for a place on the McCloud to begin propagating trout as well. And they did, with astounding success.

Besides the historical ventures Anders skillfully and delightfully takes the reader on, he also dissects the biology of the stocking programs, covering the hardiness of a stock that is constantly used for breeding to whirling disease. He discusses the loss of native species and the response (or lack of it) of individual state fish and game departments, how some of them have switched from stocking to conservation.

This brings up an interesting problem that many fish and game departments need to tackle: what is their responsibility when sportsmen (who pay for licenses whose money is then possibly used to bankroll conservation and restoration instead of stocking), clamor for more catchable fish?

Through all of these topics Anders uses a reporters zeal for facts (there are approximately 475 sources listed in the bibliography) and detachment, thereby keeping an even keel on reporting the facts and not stepping on a soapbox to expound one particular side over another. Even with this professional detachment, there is a keen sense of understanding and compassion shown for the stories he tells. For, if nothing else (but there is a lot of "else"), the book is full of stories told with the storyteller's art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meddling with Nature, March 30, 2010
I know little about fish or fishing, but I know fisherman like to go for rainbow trout, a good fish to have at the end of your line or to have in your frying pan. The rainbow trout is found all over our nation, and stands for conservation, and unspoiled waters, and the bounty of nature when nature is not trammeled by humans. Except that it does not really stand for any of these things. Maybe fisherman know all about this already, but for me, the revelations in _An Entirely Synthetic Fish: How Rainbow Trout Beguiled America and Overran the World_ (Yale University Press) were a surprise. The author Anders Halverson is a journalist, and has a doctorate in ecology, and likes to fish. He has hunted all through historical documents of government and conservation organizations, and interviewed plenty of researchers and others who have helped make the rainbow trout ubiquitous, or who are now trying to reduce its range. This is not just a fish book. It is a carefully written history of how we think about our natural resources, and about the paradoxes and dangers of trying to control the natural world.

Rainbow trout are native to waters feeding into the Pacific, in an arc that extends up from northern Mexico, though the northeastern states, and over to far eastern Russia. That doesn't matter anymore. They have been introduced to the Atlantic states, and in fact to every state. The only reason they aren't in Antarctica is that there is a lack of trout streams there; they are now on every other continent. A century ago, American fishing gentlemen were convinced that standing by a stream with rod and line was going to maintain our citizens' virility and make our democracy stronger, but fish like the eastern brook trout were not able to withstand the pollution and higher temperatures we were inflicting on our streams. These men shunned the bottom-feeding catfish. They simply needed a better trout, and the rainbow was it. The states with streams to be stocked thought this was all dandy. A recent report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says that if you spend a dollar on growing and stocking rainbows, you can expect thirty-two dollars back in hotel reservations, rod sales, and airplane tickets. Everyone knows (now) that if you move a species into a region in which it did not evolve, you are liable to change things in unexpected ways. Though rainbows were often imported with the idea of adding their diversity to the local fauna, they have decreased such diversity overall. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has acted intentionally to decrease the diversity so that the rainbow trout could prosper. In 1962, the service deliberately poisoned sections of the Green River in Utah and Wyoming with "piscicide" to get rid of the pesky fish that lived there naturally. There were some complaints by academics and ecologists at the time, but the chemical got dumped in the river, and the antidote that was supposed to be dumped downriver to neutralize it and keep it from heading on through National Parks properties didn't get there, and so there was even more of an ecological disaster. This was made worse as a public relations matter because three weeks later Rachel Carson's _Silent Spring_ was published, infuriating some constituents who would not let their representatives in Washington hear the last of it. There were four species of "trash fish" that were to be killed to let the rainbows in; all are now on the endangered species list.

Halverson's book, however, is not shrill about the many preposterous and presumptuous tinkerings with the environment that have been done for the sake of bringing more rainbows to our streams. There are few villains or fools in this story of the century since this unnatural fish has been taking over the world's fresh water systems. Many of the public servants profiled here, whether their decisions were good ones or not, were taking steps based on the best information they had at the time, with the intention of helping anglers, and with no prospect of making any material gain by their actions. Halverson tells many connected stories here in a convincing and fascinating book, and generally refrains from making judgments or regrets. There are inherent paradoxes anytime humans try to take control of nature. Fishermen may think that they are escaping from civilization by getting back to nature to pursue their prey, but it turns out the fish that many are pursuing are mere products of industrialization after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story, March 20, 2010
I bought this book for my husband who is an avid fly-fisherman. After he was done, he convinced me to read it. I don't fish. But I LOVED this book. It's such an incredible story. So well written. And I learned so much about environmental history, US history, etc. I can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of stocking rainbow trout, June 26, 2010
This book has a lot of detail but does not get bogged down nor is it boring. It is very engaging and will most likely be read very quickly. The main emphasis is on history with information on the science and technology of hatchery trout second. The author also talks a little about the future of trout and hatcheries.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book for all Cold Water Fisherman, April 2, 2010
The book is both a good read and provides, in some detail, a history and the resulting consequences of our attempts to manipulate nature in the form of a manufactured replacement fish for the fresh water fisheries we destroy or attempt to improve. The author is careful to provide the historic context under which decisions were made and to provide excellent notes and a bibliography. The latter contains much hard to find information and is likely worth the book price by itself. This book shoud be read by every thoughtful environmentally-concerned freshwater fisherman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you don't fish, this is a MUST read, March 5, 2010
In the few months since its publication, Anders Halverson's An Entirely Synthetic Fish has capture imaginations of a wide ranging audience - from avid fly fishers to the Diane Rehm Show, and rightfully so. In An Entirely Sythetic Fish, Halvers deftly tells the tale of how well intended programs have gone utterly wrong, putting the treasures of trout anglers at risk, while simultaneously spreading the joy of trout fishing around the globe.

The story of the rainbow trout is one of tinkering, and along the way we lost some of the parts. It begins in 1872 on California's McCloud River, where Spencer Baird, Livingston Stone and the fledgling United States Fish Commission sought to restore America's dwindling fish stocks, as well as American cultural virility, through the new science of fish culture. What started in the American West quickly became a global enterprise.

The native home of the rainbow spans the Pacific Rim, from Kamchatka to Mexico. Yet, through the waves of aesthetics, politics, and sporting organizations rainbow trout now swim on every continent, save Antarctica. In exploring that journey, Halverson tells a tale that is as much environmental history as it is American political history. We learn as much about key players like Stone as we do the fish itself, and how it was been steered by cultural values and financial gain, angler preferences and ecological manipulation. As an ecologist Halverson researched an engaging story filled with depth and critical insight and told with the deft skill of an accomplished journalist.

Halverson adds a refreshing and crucial perspective to that history. If you are interested in fishing history, fish biology, environmetnal or political history or simply want to read an intriguing story of the intricate relations between humans and animals this is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hubris Begets Havoc, June 22, 2010

    Environmental havoc that is.

This very good book is not just for anglers, ichthyologists, or other fishy folk; it's for anybody interested in environmental issues and man's interactions with nature.

Halverson tells the story (so over the top that sometimes it seems he's spinning a yarn) of the misplaced efforts to manipulate nature and "improve fisheries" through the widespread stocking of hatchery raised rainbow trout. In the 19th century fishing was seen as a means of protecting "dexterity in the arts of pursuit and destruction, courage and self-reliance". There was widespread concern that deterioration of these skills would compromise the nation's ability to "...maintain inviolate our rights and our liberties". As the author summarizes the prevailing mood at the time, "Say goodbye to recreational fishing, in other words, and say goodbye to American democracy".

Fishing at the time was threatened as a result of the wanton environmental destruction of the industrial revolution. And rather than dealing with the root causes, the government's response was aggressive stocking of rainbow trout, which were more resistant to poor water conditions than native species such as brook trout.

It's amazing to follow the chronicle of the various rationales that continued to support this practice to the present day. Also astonishing is the variety of unintended consequences of this activity, which has irretrievably altered ecosystems and eliminated native species in this country, and eventually around the world.

Halverson's style is engaging and accessible and he manages to avoid sanctimony in making his points. He approaches the whole subject with humility and a sense that the answers are not all known, and perhaps not knowable.

Hopefully a measure of humility will replace hubris as we steward the resources of our planet in the 21st century.

    Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Public Choice Theory, March 12, 2010
When he was a high school student, my wife and I took Anders and his family fishing in our favorite British Columbia coastal river. He was already an accomplished fisherman, lover of the outdoors, and pleasant companion.

Two nights of reading are the equivalent of an excellent college course in the history and propagation management of trout in North America. Particularly interesting is the effect "public choice theory" has had on this course of events. One of the author's principal points is that laws are enacted assuming the administrating agencies will act rationally and in the public good. In reality however, their staffs are led subconsciously and consciously towards ends which meet their own perceived needs and this has greatly influenced the process.

    5-0 out of 5 stars What a Read!, October 6, 2010
Even for non-fishermen, this book has proven to be a compelling study of how we, as a society, make decisions with consequences far beyond our ability to imagine time and scale. 5-0 out of 5 stars In my novice experience, this is the best beginner's guide..., June 26, 2007
In my novice experience, this is the best beginner's guide to fly fishing. I had ordered the Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide together with this book and in comparison I have to say that L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing is the better one. This book provides a much better introduction to fly fishing to novices like me, beginning from the basics. Although advanced fly fishers would probably be bored by the chapters that introduce the uninitiated to this sport/pastime, teaching them the bones, so to speak, I am sure this book has a lot of wisdom to impart to all enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "how-to" books on fly fishing, December 30, 2007
This is a composite of three previously published L. L Bean guides: fly-fishing, casting, and fly tying. The first part is Whitlock's book on fly-fishing and is one of the best (the other being Rosenbauer's Orvis book) introductions to the sport of fly fishing. The Whitlock illustrations are always great, and the information is top-notch. You will find out everything you need from fly lines to fly rods to knots to basic flies.

Add the other two parts and this is an excellent overall view of all three areas. Because of the comprehensive approach, it is one of the best "how to" books on fly-fishing available.

Don't be fooled by the "L.L.Bean" title--the book does not promote their products. It is a top-rated introduction to fly fishing, casting, and tying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide, August 10, 2009
This book was much more informative to a new trout fisherman than the Amazon recommended The Orvis Fly-Sishing Guide, Completely Revised and Updated with Over 400 New Color Photos and Illustrations. I bought both books, along with The Orvis Guide to Beginning Fly Fishing: 101 Tips for the Absolute Beginner, as a package from Amazon. This book was quite a bit more informative than the Orvis book. While expected promotion of the Orvis brand, the Orvis book is practically a sales catalog for the Orvis brand, whereas the LL Bean book focused more on casting techniques and other much needed information, that was less in depth with the Orvis book. Also, the Orvis book dedicates way too many pages to fly tying, well over 1/3rd of the book, an art that is surely lost on the beginner fly fisherman. I firmly believe that most new fly fisherman will buy flys for quite a while before beginning to tie their own. There is so much to learn and practice in fly fishing to take on the art of fly tying in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent all around beginner's book, August 5, 2009
I just started fly fishing and this book has proved to be an excellent buy. recommend that anyone interested in the sport first invest in themselves by taking a lesson from a professional fly fishing instructor (i found mine on craigslist in Houston - Robert Logan - highly recommend him). after you take a basic lesson, this book makes a lot of sense and provides you with indepth science of fly fishing as well as insane amount of pictures, drawings, and step by step instructions on how to do it all - from soup to nuts. does do a very light sell on LL Bean products/services, but nothing overbearing or too in your face.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to start, June 23, 2008
Great result when you use a buying catalogue like Cabelas, Orvis or L.L. Bean and combine it with the information of this guide... they should make an spanish version

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a novice., September 30, 2007

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for the beginner., August 25, 2007
Outstanding book for the beginner. Lots of color pics and diagrams plus tones of good information. I'm not an advanced fisherman so I will not comment about how it would be fore an advanced fisherman but I would say if I where to guess, it has plenty of info even for the none beginner.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate - no, Excellent - yes., December 19, 2010
A great primer for novice and intermediate fly fishers. It uses a wealth of color illustrations and photographs to back up well written, concise tutorials of how to setup your tackle, tie knots, cast flies, etcetera. Each tutorial includes clear explanations of why the authors recommend a particular approach and in many instances time lapse photographs of both well and poorly implemented casts with explanations of the problem(s) at the root of each poor cast and recommendations of how to fix them. The tutorials cover a wide variety of casting methods (all the way up to the double haul) with explanations of when you will most likely want to use each one. Of the half dozen or so fly fishing books I've read to date none compare to this one when it comes to teaching casting and providing insights that allow you to quickly realize what you are probably doing wrong on an off day.

The second half of the book deals with fly tying. This section may be of less interest to a novice but is also well written and provides a useful introduction to the subject. I suspect most readers will quickly outgrow this section once they start to tie their own flies but it helps you to start without buying another book.

To describe this as an "ultimate book of fly fishing" stretches the truth but it is a very, very good one for anyone who is new to the sport or who is looking to improve their casting technique(s).

Highly recommended for anyone considering fly fishing (there are well reasoned recommendations for equipment for a variety of fish) and those who want to cast like a pro. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Every autumn, millions of men and women across the country don their camo, stock up on doe urine, and undertake a quintessential American tradition – deer hunting. The pinnacle of a hunter’s quest is killing a buck with antlers that "score" highly enough to qualify in the Boone and Crockett record book. But in all his seasons on the trail, Pete Bodo, an avid outdoorsman and student of the hunt, had never reached that milestone. Sadly, he had to admit it -- he was a nimrod.

Whitetail Nation is the uproarious story of the season Pete Bodo set out to kill the big buck. From the rolling hills of upstate New York to the vast and unforgiving land of the Big Sky to the Texas ranches that feature high fences, deer feeders, and money-back guarantees, Bodo traverses deep into the heart of a lively, growing subculture that draws powerfully on durable American values– the love of the frontier, the importance of self reliance, the camaraderie of men in adventure, the quest for sustained youth, and yes, the capitalist’s right to amass every high tech hunting gadget this industry’s exploding commerce has to offer.

Gradually, Bodo closes in on his target – that elusive monster buck -- and with each day spent perched in a deer stand or crawling stealthily in high grass (praying the rattlesnakes are gone) or shivering through the night in a drafty cabin (flannel, polar fleece and whiskey bedamned), readers are treated with a hilarious and unforgettable tour through a landscape that ranges from the exalted to the absurd. Along the way Bodo deftly captures the spirit and passion of this rich American pursuit, tracing its history back to the days of Lewis and Clark and examining that age old question – "why do men hunt?"

I am no hunter, but all my relatives and their in-laws take to the stands in pursuit, and this book perfectly captures the spirit of the chase. There is no doubt that this is a first-person account, entertainingly well-written. The devotion to the chase reiterates the philosophy of all the hunters I have ever known, "Nothing is too good for deer hunting!" This book is such a fun read, it is nice to be able to have it during the off-season to extend the excitement until the next opportunity.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great look at the hunter in most of us., December 21, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Having been a hunter for years, when I saw this book on the Amazon Vine I thought that it might hold some fascination. I was pleasantly surprised when I read it.

Bodo describes his year in pursuit of a regal buck with an antler rack you would not only write home about but tell everyone you knew about. While almost any hunter would love to have the year full of hunts that Bodo did (several different states including Montana, Pennsylvania and New York looking for the big guy), Bodo handles the commentary with aplomb and grace.

Those who argue against hunting will find little ammunition for their arguments since the author talks about hunting from many different angles, not just the trophy rack viewpoint. He truly loves what he is doing and is a great example of hunting done right, not only successfully but also ethically.

If you are a hunter or have an interest in the huntling lifestyle, this book is a great read. ... Read more
