This alarm works the way it's described, September 2, 2009
I've had this alarm for 2 months now and just ordered a second for the back door. The door alarm is VERY loud and piercing. I would think a burglar would not bother entering a home if this alarm was set off. If you want to use the Home mode (so that it sounds off right away when the door is opened), you have a choice of selecting "chime" or "alarm." For the Home mode using "alarm" you do have to activate it with your 4 digit code but you do not need to punch in your code if you're using "chime" for Home mode.

When you set it to "Away" mode, you just need to enter your 4 digit code and leave within 45 seconds. When you come home, you have 30 seconds to enter your code to deactivate the alarm.

I have three of these. One is used as an instant on alarm for a door that nobody is supposed to EVER open. The alarm is LOUD AS THE DICKENS !!! I mean LOUD LOUD ear hurting loud. That's a good thing.

The other two are used as door chimes for every time a door opens (in our case at our place of business).

Th unit comes with both screws and double-sided pressure sensitive tape. Installation is a snap. They will mount on either side of the door, too. Setting your 4 digit code is also a no-brainer: hit the learn button, then enter your 4 numbers on the keypad. See the green light. You're done.

If anybody has a problem with this thing, then they are expecting it to be something it is not. Oh, of course it has batteries. And they are not included. So get some and quit whining.

For what it does, it does it well... and for a peanuts price, too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I am using my alarm as much to know if someone is coming IN as OUT. I have small children and you can't be too careful. I have my alarm set to chime whenever the door is opened. And it works like a dream. It's sufficiently loud for me to hear in my small house, even with a tv on. When we leave the door open (bringing in the groceries)it's nice that the door doesn't keep chiming. I honestly haven't set it to the alarm mode, so I can't comment on that.

this item does exactly what it says it does. the area i live in was having a rash of break ins mid day. my husband and i live in a 3 story colonial. it is hard enough to hear whats going on on other floors but add in daily life like tv, air conditioners, fans and music and you cant hear at all. when we are home during the day we set the alarm to chime and it lets us know if our door opens, from every floor. at night we set it to home so that if an intruder enters we will hear them. during the day when we are at work it is set to away to alert my neighbors if anyone tries to enter our home. you can not simply take out the batteries as another review stated ... you need a screwdriver to do so. and with the sheer volume of the sound that is outputted by the alarm, anyone would run from the home, thinking it was connected to a company. deffinatly worth the investment. we have put one on our basement door as well, to alert us if that door opens since we do not go down there very often.

If you're a merchant or a parent or anyone else looking for a simple alarm to let you know when a door is opened, this is a very good device. You can switch between a ding-dong alert for when you're in the room and a screaming siren when you want it as an intrusion alarm.

I had previously installed a similar alarm from First Alert. The problem with those is that they use hearing aid batteries which run down quickly and cost nearly $10 to replace. This GE alarm has more functionality and uses longer-lived and less costly to replace AAA batteries.

The only thing that prevented me from giving this alarm five stars is that I had to replace it after it failed after less than a year of use -- one of the control switches on the alarm failed.

I recently bought two of these alarms for my front and back door.
The product is exceptional for the price.
It is easy to install and easy to set up.
I really feel safe when I leave the house, or even when I am IN the house.
I used to have one that, after awhile, stopped taking my code.
Needless to say, THAT was embarrassing when the neighbors would come out to see what was going on.

I have these alarms on three outside doors and they are very effective. The alarm is plenty loud enough to keep anyone from wanting to enter the home and loud enough to wake you from sleep should it go off during the night. Probably the best you could find for the money.

I bought this alarm more to keep kids in than out. T%hese alarms are REALLY LOUD ! I purposely set one off so that the kids could hear what they sound like, and now they don't dare go out without asking. As a precaution, I put them on at night then take them off in the morning, so that they won't be able to "try to figure them out". Love it !

I purchased this alarm as a supplement to my apartment's wireless alarm system. It's very easy to install, very easy to set up the passcode, and very easy to use. In the "away" mode, you have 30 seconds to disarm the alarm. In the "home" mode, the alarm sounds instantly if an intruder comes in uninvited. As the packaging states, it requires 3 AAA batteries. It's EXTREMELY loud and should act as an effective deterrent. Highly recommended.

Items were shipped promptly (I ordered two) and were exactly what I wanted. The alarm is very loud. It will, at the very least, be a good deterrent.

My daughters house was broken into the day after Thanksgiving. They came in through the back yard and even though there was a big dog in the yard, they used a big shovel to hit the dog and tear off the back door. The horror of it is, is that my 12 year old grandson was asleep in one of the bedrooms with the door closed. My daughter was at work and the dad had gone to run some errands. They stole two flat screen TV's and went into the bedroom where my grandson was sleeping. We assume they saw him there and did not take his TV, but ran.

This happened around noon, in broad daylight.

I believe, if my daughter had had this type of door alarm, my grandson AND the neighbors would have heard it. And yes, she is ordering some of these for her doors. ... Read more

DOES DOUBLE LOCK, August 19, 2010
I have seen a few reviews on here saying these cuffs do not double lock, they do. I was skeptical to purchase these because of those reviews, but I'm glad I did. They are inexpensive and work. The cuffs double lock by inserting the pin on the key into the pin hole below the internal locking block. You remove the double lock by turning the key counter clockwise in the key hole (clockwise unlocks the cuffs).

I also saw a review here stating these cuffs had a tab on the side that unlocked them without the keys. This is incorrect. the only way to unlock them is by use of the keys.

I was really impressed when I got these on the mail (which was faster than I expected). First of all, these handcuffs are very durable and look real (i'm no handcuff expert, but i'm pretty convinced these are real). they do double lock, you just have to know how to do it if you read the instructions, although mine didn't seem to work for both handcuffs like it should, it still doesn't make me rate it any worse than the five stars it deserves for its exelent quality. FIVE STARS!!!

These are functional handcuffs, but they aren't double locking as the description says they are. Also, not necessarily a bad thing, but there are levers on the side that unlock them. Defeats the purpose a little in my opinion, but if you lose the keys, there's a back-up unlock. You get what you pay for.

These are heavyweight, solid metal cuffs. I'm a pretty strong guy and they hold very well- I haven't found any way to pry or bend or break them.
There is one problem that cuts this down from a 5-star rating: They aren't double-locking. In any way. At first, I thought I'd just missed something in the locking mechanism, but when I looked at the included instruction booklet, there wasn't any mention of double-locking. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical but I figured I would give it a try. Although my intended use for this is not specifically what it was designed for. I am using it as a prop for television and independent film. It will be shone on the actors faces to simulate them watching television. I had my girlfriend go up to my sons room and do a test to see how authentic it looked through the closed curtains. She set it on top of his TV. Then to test it she turned on one of the items. I had to guess which it was, the TV or the Fake TV. I couldn't tell the difference. When we compared it to the larger TV in the living room it did not shine bright enough to fool me. It works well in smaller rooms to represent a smaller TV. All in all I rate it at a 4star. If it was a bit brighter I would have given it a 5.

Kept My House From Being Broke Into, September 16, 2010
I bought a Fake TV last year when we went to Florida for the winter. I also bought/installed 2 Barking Rex motion sensor alarms and installed 4 electronic light timers. The Fake TV I set up on an electronic timer.

We live on a private road with several summer cottages. While in Florida the neighor across the road (full time resident) and the one next door (summer cottage) got broke into. Our house was not bothered! When our neighbor came to check on our house he said the Barking Rex scared the crap out of him. I credit my passive security measures as keeping us from becoming a victim too.

The Fake TV and 1 Barking Rex was passed on to my son. So this year I bought 2 Fake TVs and 2 more Barking Rex alarms while we take an extended vacation. The new Fake TV now has a timer installed, new and improved. It can be on full time, come on at dark and stay on for either 4 hours or 7 hours. There is no need to hook it into a timer. Nice touch.

As a retired police officer I strongly recommend this to anyone that wants to imrove the impression someone is home. Set it up as instructions indicate to get the best benefit. Add Barking Rex and some light timers and only your neighbors will know you are not home. We are trying to keep the stranger from breaking in, we trust our neighbors. The stranger will see the lights coming on and going off, see the Fake TV lights in the window, and if they approach the doors hear a dog barking at them. Enough to make them move on to a different house.

This product is definitely worth the money. It does exactly what the advertising says it will do. Assuming you don't need sound, it's a far superior solution at $29. to using a real TV to create the impression someone is home. It consumes less energy than a real TV & if it burns out, well it costs $29. - waaay cheaper than an LCD panel.

Best outdoor system on the market today!, October 12, 2010
From the moment I opened the box the Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master Security System with Night Vision was very easy to understand and had great setup diagrams with color coded ribbons for stress free setup. Where I was mounting the unit 20 feet off the ground I connected everything in the house and tested it to make sure it was working first. Once the camera was mounted in place I simply adjusted it to the area I wanted to monitor and then used electrical tape around the mount joints as they are not as tight as I would have expected and I did not want to have to climb a ladder after every wind storm to adjust. Setup was very quick after installing the mounting bracket.

It should be noted the the ribbon (power) cable that connects to the outdoor camera is so flat and thin that you can bring it in through a window without compromising the window seal when the window is fully closed. This is a huge plus as I did not need to drill a hole for it.

I set up email alerts and also I highly recommend if you have some blowing tree branches in view as I do that you set up particular areas for movement detections. If you do this and set the motion rate for recording you will capture only scenes of interest which makes it so much easier when reviewing recordings.

The master system comes with the network hardware and the invaluable command center. This is extremely easy to navigate. You can zoom, pan and tilt effortlessly. I am thinking of adding this software for remote viewing as well.

The night vision is suprisinging very very good in low to know light. I am extremely impressed with the night vision and have to say that it is well worth the extra money.

The only drawback I can see to this system is that if you enable and use the audio component which comes built in and has great range, picks up way to much wind. I would like to see an add on for wind noise reduction. This would not keep me from highly recommending this product. I did a lot and I mean a lot of research (hands on and reading) before making my decision to purchase this camera and I am very glad I did.

I highly recommend this product! Picture is extremely clear not washy like others. The audio is good enough to capture voices and sounds with in the entire viewing areas and sometimes beyond.

I was not able to figure out how to upload a few pictures with this review otherwise I would have.

Thank you Logitech for a superb and well built system that seems to have it all.

I'm rewriting this review now that I've tested out the system for more than 2 weeks.

Unfortunately there are several areas where this system fails but I'm hoping its software related and there are fixes on the way.

First of all, the software included is easy to use but the way it works is extremely poor. I cannot get footage to record properly on my system. Either its because the cameras are not detecting motion until its too late, or because there's a delay from when the recording starts and when they were triggered. Either way, i've got nothing but an empty driveway after a car has driven down and past my camera, or footage of a person just walking out of frame once its stored on the hard drive. This is even after increasing the sensitivity which only results in constant false events. This makes this system pointless and a waste of money unless its fixed in the near future.

The framerate is too low when it does actually record, footage is blurry as a result. There's no way i can ever read a license plate as its been advertised unless its right in front of the camera.

the mount is garbage. Save yourself the nightmare and find a better quality one if you can. logitech should be ashamed to include such poor quality hardware with these expensive cameras.

if this system worked properly i.e. recording people walking up to my house which was the whole point of buying this thing, i'd give it a much higher score. the fact that i can use existing power lines makes it a breeze to install but without the ability for me to record footage consistently, i'll have no choice but to return this before my 30 days is up.

Two Cameras, both no good, November 22, 2010
I purchased two of the outdoor 700e cameras along with the Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master Security System with Night Vision on September 27th; video quality is just ok but has way too many false alarms. Three weeks later the cameras were lost by the network and I had to do a "find cameras" diagnostic routine, one was found and the other was not. I left the one camera that could not be found plugged in (this was a mistake) hoping it would be discovered at some point but never was. A few days later I smelt something burning outside like wires, I did not want to believe it was the camera but as it turned out there was nothing else that could have been the cause so I unplugged it and the smell went away after about ten minuets. Now the other camera has gone missing, I have attempted to reset it and called Logitech support with no luck. The bottom line is that I am very disappointed in this system; I was hoping for a security system that would at least function, I did not get it. I will compliment Logitech on one aspect of this experience; they are sending me a UPS tag and will be refunding my purchase price. Unfortunately, it looks like it is back to the drawing board for me.

I have the 750e Master System set up with two 700e cameras for external monitoring and one 700i camera for internal monitoring. The 700e camera has night vision and works VERY well in darkness, so you can monitor both the front and back of your house in darkness. I have been extremely impressed with the image and audio quality of these cameras, as well as the extremely easy installation.

The AV signal is transmitted via a powerline adapter, so you don't have to run cables through the house, as everything goes right through your existing electrical outlets.

The software allows you to connect up to six cameras to the system. These cameras can be set up with motion activation so that you only record when action is taking place. Another great feature is the fact that you can view the cameras from either a web browser or your cellular phone (Android, Blackberry, iPhone). There is also a premium online service where you can control the system remotely and review recorded video instead of only live video.

You will need a master system to use this camera, so please keep this in mind before purchasing!

Great system, just a few flaws, November 11, 2010
I try to keep up writing reviews for products I buy, especially the items that I myself do a lot of research on, before buying. So I'll break this down as best I can. I live in a 2-story, 2800 square foot home. And for the longest time, I've wanted a surveillance system to make me feel safe both when I am at home and away. The Logitech camera system and software does it right, with only a few minor issues, and I stress minor.

I have an Apple router but run Windows 7 on my PC; I'm also using the free application on my iPhone. I had zero problems with the software install, even when it came to Window's firewall. I'm currently running 2 indoor cameras and 1 outdoor camera...but, I actually plan on using nothing but outdoor cameras for my entire system (to include for inside surveillance). And that's about the only real issue I have with the system. The indoor camera works awesome and does what it should. It delivers good quality color video and even over the iPhone application or over the web (from Logitech's website), all of my friends all have said, "Wow, that looks awesome!" BUT, and it's a big BUT, once the sun goes down, the indoor cameras are very limited. Shy of the bad guy turning on all of the lights in my house, then committing his crime, the indoor camera is of little use during nighttime hours. And at first, I was okay with that because I'm home at night and it's actually the daytime when nobody is home. But then I bought the outdoor Logitech camera and WOW, what a difference because it holds the very same quality as the indoor camera, but also does a phenomenal job at night. So with that, I'm going to return the indoor cameras and use the outdoor cameras for outside as well as inside. But I still want to give my review on the indoor camera as I've been using it for about a month now.

Pros:

Color Quality. Again, great color quality. Even using the digital zoom, I was impressed at how good it looks. My wife being the glass half empty type of person commented that you can't see the face of the person all that well. But my reply was - but you can sure as heck see his race, clothing description, weight, height, hair color and most importantly you can see if he is or isn't wearing gloves...hence, you could see clearly where he may have left evidence (fingerprints, DNA, etc).

Included 2GB media card. This is a great feature!! This means that if bad guy breaks in and thinks he's outsmarting you by stealing your computer (with the footage of him), you can still revert back to the camera itself to retrieve the footage saved to the media card. Another great thing about the camera media card is that your home computer does not need to be always on to be recording. For example, my computer goes into sleep mode after about an hour of inactivity. So if my computer is in hibernate mode for a full day, the cameras are still recording footage and will sync to my computer when it awakes. For it to work seamless, I just leave the Logitech software running in the task bar (background).

Software. Logitech did it right with the software. It was a very easy install, features are clear and I love that you can customize each camera you have on your network. For example, out of the 3 cameras I have, I only want 1 of them to send off text message alerts. Again, it's nice that the alerts are not just a system feature, but rather an individual camera setting. You can also adjust the duration of alerts to save yourself from getting thousand texts. For me, a 5 minute window is perfect, just as long as I get the initial text, I wouldn't be concerned about getting 20 more in under a 5 minute or however long of a window you choose. I also like the way the software saves all of the recorded video. With 3 cameras going, I've been getting a lot of recorded footage. The software not only allows you to use choose a given date and time to research, but if you were to search out for that file in Windows explorer, the software does a great job by saving the footage under the name of camera (for example "Living Room"), then the month (10 for October), then the day within that month. Being a police officer, I really like that if I had to turn over crucial footage (if my home was burglarized, etc), all of the footage would have clear a folder structure and time stamp that would make sense to any other investigating officer.

Alerts. This feature sealed the deal for me buying this system to begin with. You select a zone in which if motion occurs, an alert will be sent. For example, although my camera has a pretty wide shot of my living room to include front door, my only concern is if movement is picked up at the front door. Once motion is detected, a text message is sent to my phone. The alert text message is awesome; it says what camera picked up what motion and at what date and time...simple and efficient. BUT, I will mention alerts in the Cons section, so please read on.

Camera size. Again, I have both the indoor and outside camera and was very impressed by how small they were. I also lucked out that I have power sources on top of my potter shelves, so I was able to plug in the cameras without any wires being run down walls, etc. And because the cameras are small, I've actually told friends that I have the cameras and it still took them a while to actually figure out where.

The "wow" factor. I'll admit it, I'm that guy who loves his tech toys, who loves showing off new technology and how I make it work for my family's safety. The first day when I showed all of my police friends the system, everyone was amazed. I should get a kick back from Logitech on all of the potential customers I made for them. Being able to open the iPhone app and show my friends that I have 24/7 surveillance of my home, felt very cool. The iPhone app also works very well over 3g cell service (not just wi-fi).

Cons:

Price. Well I mentioned the "wow" factor when I showed off the system to my friends. Well, I got the same expression when I told them how much. For me to get 6 cameras, all of them being the outdoor cameras, is a bit pricey. But, I will say that the software being free is nice. It's also nice to know that each camera comes with that 2GB media card (another plus that make the high costs seem understandable). And although I'm not that interested in audio, again, if you're going to pay the big bucks for a camera, at least it gives you color and audio as an option.

Night time quality. Again, if all you care about is crystal clear footage in the daytime, then the indoor camera is for you. But for me, I began to get frustrated that for so much money, I was only getting daytime footage. For a bit more money per camera, I feel that it was well worth it, to be able to see what's going on in my home 24/7.

Logitech server. This is a tough one to explain, but I'll do my best. When you install the cameras and software, the alert system is dependent on Logitech's servers / service. In the month that I've been using the camera, I only had 1 time that their servers went down. In that time, the cameras in my home were recording as they should BUT the alert notification system will not work if Logitech's service is down or disrupted. Although it was only down for a few hours, I was still very unpleased given the fact that the alert system is what it's all about. I don't want to come home to find my house has been burglarized and didn't get a text because the servers were down. Instead, I want to get a text message telling me someone is there, that way I can call the police and increase my chances of getting the suspect while he is still in the residence. The alert service has only been disrupted once, but makes me nervous for what's to come down the road as these cameras begin to sell.

Alerts. Again, read my Pros section about the alert function. Where I had a problem is how long it can take to get the alert text message. I've done some very extensive testing and it ranges between 40 seconds to 4 minutes from when my phone gets the alert text message. Now 4 minutes may not seem like a long time, but a skilled criminal can do A LOT in just a few minutes. I'm not too happy about the variations on alert times, especially since there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to why sometimes I get the notification in under a minute, but other times over 3 minutes. Clearly, it has to do with Logitech servers.

Plug outlet requirements. Although I get why you have to plug in your unit to the actual wall, it doesn't mean I have to like it. It's been a little bit of a challenge with some of my cameras to find a good discreet location coupled with having an available outlet there. I'm guessing that at some point, Logitech will begin selling overpriced extension cords or power bars that allow the cameras to work even without being directly plugged into the wall. I believe a read few reviews from people that have done this though; I would live to get their reply or feedback in this review thread.

I already did a review of my 750 outdoor camera. I do lot that.

I added this one for inside my house, mainly because it was smaller and could be placed in more locations.

Overall I really like this product. My only criticism is that I wish it had a night vision mode. There are other cameras in the market which are similar in size which do offer this mode. With that feature, I could have used this camera as my baby monitor camera.

At last - one that really works, June 23, 2007
This is the fourth remote driveway alarm we have tried. The others ranged from a $70 GE unit to a $250 unit that supposedly worked "up to four miles." They would either not have the range needed (about 100 yards) or would stop working after a few days. Replacements were tried for all, and all had the same failures or problems.

This one, however, has now been working flawlessly here for two weeks. It has been through a major rainstorm and several extremely foggy mornings. Temperatures here have been as high as 94 degrees.

Other pro's:
Worked out of the box with both receivers. The default settings were fine and setting switches was not necessary.
We like the ability to choose the alarm sound. We chose the short musical selection for the house. The workshop/garage has the sharp whistle tone, as there is often other loud noise going on.

Con's:
Like most infra-red receivers, it does occasionally pick up dogs, deer, and even a crow that flies close enough. It does not trigger on trees or leaves, even in high wind (and where we have it mounted, there is a small forest across the driveway.) I suppose that would be possible, however, if the tree/leaves were in the sunshine, and thus hotter than the surroundings. BTW, although called a "motion sensor," the manufacturer says an object must be a minimum of six degrees warmer than the surroundings to be detected.

Suggestions:
We found that vehicle pickup is more reliable if the sensor is pointed somewhat down the driveway rather than directly across it.
Setting it higher off the ground reduces the triggers on dogs, but also makes it possible to miss some vehicles that do not produce a heat signature that high off the ground. We set ours at about four feet. It still picks up medium and larger dogs, but has not missed a single vehicle. It does not pick up cats, skunks, etc.
If you get false alarms, especially at similar times of day each day, try changing the transmitter and receiver subcode. One of your neighbors may be using the same unit.

Update, 2009:
Well, it's still working fine almost two years later. It does occasionally miss a vehicle, and we have noticed that almost all of the ones it misses are painted white. Maybe that has something to do with the temperature difference requirements. Maybe mounting it a little lower would help.

It has stopped working once. That was one of those so-foggy-everything-is-soaked mornings. I brought the transmitter indoors and removed the battery. Then I set the opened case in front of a small fan for a couple of hours. After the drying it again worked fine, and has since. Still highly recommended.

Dakota Driveway Alert, January 10, 2007
I own a similar system by Dakota, but mine uses the magnetic detection sensor that is buried in or along side my driveway. The transmitters are the same as well as the reciever.

The PIR sensor type is sensitive to false alarms due to wind (swaying trees) and wildlife (the neighbors dog). This is unacceptable to me as I only want to detect vehicles of all sorts although it will actually detect a person if they walk directly over the magnetic sensor.

Range is very good as my driveway is about 1/2 mile long and is down over a hill and it works almost to the bottom of the hill.

My two complaints have been solved by me. The first is a single common 9 volt battery only lasts a month and near the end of that time won't work if it is very cold. After the sun comes up it starts working again. Using Lithium batteries and wiring in extra parallel batteries extends reliable operation.

The second problem was it was not waterproof and stopped working. I dried it out with a hair drier and it worked again. I used Vaseline over the O ring seal and it has worked well and stayed dry for the past 7 months.

Dakota vs Chamberlain Wireless Driveway Alert, May 30, 2008
I first purchased a Chamberlain "The Reporter" alert, returned it, and then purchased the Dakota alert. The Chamberlain is very cheaply constructed, difficult to adjust, and I could never get it to give reliable alerts, despite numerous adjustment attempts.

The Dakota is by far superior in terms of construction, performance, operational options, and ease of adjustments. It's well worth the additional $75. My only complaint about the Dakota is that it is extremely sensitive, even at the lowest settings, so I had to play around quite a bit with location and angle of the mount before I eliminated most erroneous alerts. When I called Dakota to ask for setup advice, I reached a technician who was actually very knowledgable about the technical operaton of the unit and therefore, quite helpful.

Could be better, June 13, 2009
Bought my first one in '97. Lasted (reliably) for a couple years then quit. Quit because water got inside even with O-Ring seal on cover. Sent it back (after warrantee expired) for replacement. They charged me about 1/3 less than new. New one lasted about 1.5 years before quitting - same issue, moisture inside. Someone somewhere must make a reliable unit that does NOT quit after a year or so.

Not Worth the Money, April 11, 2009
I have had a couple of these systems for about a year and a half. As other reviews have stated, there are problems working in wet weather and when it is cold out (below 20 degrees or so. I expected to get false alarms with deer and other animals, so that didn't bother me. After all, I wanted to be able to detect people, not just vehicles coming up my road.

I was able to eliminate the cold weather problem with better batteries. I did some research and found that all alkaline batteries start to fail in freezing weather, but lithium will still work well and last a LOT longer too. (Amazon has the best deal around on Ultra Life Battery UPVL-X 10 Year Smoke Detector Battery 9 volt batteries)

Lately however, both of these units quit working, and I don't know why. They seem to work fine when I take them inside, but fail when placed back out. This could be a wet weather issue, but I can't go out with a hair dryer every day, so this is a serious problem.

The manufacturer's website has no email address, and the comment page doesn't work.
I'm not sure if there is anything better on the market, but these aren't cheap, and aren't dependable either.

We've had this device guarding our driveway for a few weeks now. It seems to be effective about 90% of the time (after much adjustment of the sensor's height) in detecting vehicles. It's about 100% effective at false alarming for dogs, birds, and other wildlife at all hours of the night. This then sets off our three dogs to barking.

Still, my wife likes it since she doesn't have a clear view of the driveway and we live out in the country where home defense is completely up to us.

Also, it's less expensive than the induction-type of sensor (which doesn't detect people on foot), and less noticeable than the air hose type (which can be moved out of the way by the bad guy). It's a compromise, but probably the best available for the price.

I bought one of these systems in December of 2008, but did not get around to installing it until late January of 2009. I could not get it to work with the transmitter more than 100 feet from the receiver. I called Dakota Alert, and they said to send it back. They returned it in a reasonable time, having replaced the transmitter circuit board, but it would only transmit about 120 feet. They again said to send it back, and about 10 days later returned it with another new transmitter circuit board. This time it works great!

I have it set up about 430 feet away, and it rings every time. I have noticed no false alarms. It will pick up a person walking, but I have not noticed it being set off by the deer that frequent our area. I don't know how I got by without it. I recommend it highly.

While I am dissapointed that the product was defective, Dakota Alert kept working at it until the fixed the problem. I wish other manufacturers would stand benind their product like Dakota Alert did.

My driveway is about 300 feet long and we do not have a visual of the entrace. If someone enters the drive, we neeeded a few seconds to secure our overly friendly dog. In most instances the alarm has functioned well. However, it does sound when there is not a vehicle or person in the drive. We do live in a rural area and there is a lot of wildlife. I just wish it was able to sound only when a car or person is detected. Too many false alarms.

The Defender SN502-4Ch-002 is my first DVR system and for what it has should be my last. It stores a months worth of video and the video is surprisingly good. On a 55" tv the quality isn't much worse than what regular cable, using only the coax cable, would be. The color quality is great. As far as the night vision I'm very surprise on how well the night vision video. Sometimes I just like to turn to the dvr's channel to see if the pesky neighborhood cats are around. I've see a few good cat fights with it, oh and you have instant replay!!! I hope this video helps. Make sure you get to the end to see video samples.

I have had this unit installed now since its release. The set-up was a breeze. I should mention however that I have allot of experience with computers and networking, but even with that said I still think the set-up was very basic and easy to understand. I set up the system to check to make sure the cameras were all working, which they all worked fine, in about 15 minutes. This test did not include any of the networking, but it showed how easy it would be if I did not need the network functions. After installing the DVR, cameras, and running the included wires for the cameras, I had it set up and recording using the motion detection on all the cameras in about 15 minutes again. The networking did not require any degree to figure out, and the tech support is excellent if there are any problems. I did purchase an extra squid adapter and power supply for the cameras because I installed two of the cameras inside my house and two outside and I wanted the ability to turn off the inside cameras when I was home for a little added security in case I had any online security breaches. This is really not necessary, but I like to be able to tell my guests who are staring at a camera that the inside cameras are off for now. Setting up this system for mobile view using my BB Storm was no problem at all with the provided step-by-step document.

Since I installed my system I have had two of my business friends over and they were amazed with the quality of this system for the price I paid for it. They also told me about the horror stories, things I was able to avoid, they had while installing and setting up there professional systems. Both friends told me, if they had it to do again they would go with this system, but the model with 8 cameras, for there business.

The reason I gave this unit 4 out of 5 stars actually has nothing to do with the unit.
-The video quality is worth every penny I paid for.
-The set-up was a very easy process.
-The customer support is great.
-Worked on my BB Storm with OS .607 and below. Will not work with OS .713 as of right now!
I only have two problems with this unit. Neither kept me from purchasing the unit obviously:
-The firmware, that came on my unit, does not support the e-mail notifications currently. I have been assured the problem is being addressed and should be fixed soon. This is the reason for the 4 out of 5 stars. I will update this when the problem is fixed.
-The DVR accepts the standard security cable type, but the cameras are not the standard type. This means that if you were to run all the wires for these cameras and decided later that you wanted to install better cameras, you would have to run new wires because Defender does not sell a converter for the cameras end of the wire.

I should also add to this post, in case anyone was wanting to be able to use the remote viewing or mobile viewing for this unit, that Defender recommends [...]
for users with dynamic IP from there ISP. This is also what I used, and I would definitely recommended it. DYNDNS makes it very easy to set up an account and also provides information on how to set up your router to auto-sync with your account. You can set up the DVR to auto-sync as well, but do not set up both the router and the DVR. Just set up one or the other and let it do it's thing. Defender provides all the information needed to set up the DVR with your DYNDNS account.

I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone looking for a great video surveillance system [...].

Had the 300 series and had hard drive issues. Defender replaced it, failed again. They then upgraded the entire system to the 502 for the cost of the difference in the price. Buy the 502 system, excellent results, great night vision. The entire system is much more user friendly and has been working flawlessly. I cannot say enough about the customer service from the company.I have two units in operation and have had no problems what so ever. Can not say enough about it and would recommend this model to anyone looking for a basic system. Wish Defender had a good PTZ camera to purchase for this model also.I would give them a five star rating.

Let me just say that I put these systems in a lot for people and its not a bad little home system. I like the features that the DVR offers and it comes with everything you will need in a complete package. The cameras on the other hand were not a very good quality. During sunny days the cameras get washed out with to much light so its hard to see anything from them. The IR use for the night time is better but still far from high quality. Overall this is still a good system and worth the price but because of the cameras only 3 stars from me.

I shopped and shopped the internet looking for an affordable camera system for my home. I finally decided on this system and it was a great choice. I had it up and running in less than 10 minutes out of the box to test it. Installation was very simple...it really is a plug n play system. I made the experience of hiding the wires in a finished house more hassle than I needed to because I wanted perfection. You can't tell we have cameras unless you really look. Wire is thin and easy to hide under carpet etc.

One of the main reasons I bought this system is because I wanted a video/power wire all in one. A lot of systems need a power outlet near the camera and a seperate wire for video back to the recorder. Way to much hassle to have an electrician come in for that. This system has one wire for both.

I am quite surprised at how great night vision is. I was concerned it only sees 15 ft...but being new to this prior to my purchase I thought that would be a problem. It sees 15 ft in absolute pitch black like our backyard. However, if there is a hint of light, porch light, street light anything than the camera is amazing at night. I have one that sees at least 50-60 feet at night only from the front porch lights down our street.

Networking was a breeze. The 10 steps or so and video online to walk you through it made it no trouble at all. I can view it on our internal network, from any computer outside the house and on our iphones.

Cameras come with 12LED's only which in turn decreases the max distance for night vision.
DVR (although comes with 4 cameras) only comes with 4 channels so no room for expansion.
Quality is alright, I believe it's only 420 lines of resolution which theoratically should produce a 480i signal.
Set up is EXTREMELY easy, and networking features are simple to set up as well.
Overall I gave this 3 stars only because for the price you can get the same exact thing (different brand) but the 4 cameras would come with (24 LED's) as opposed to 12, and DVR would come with 8 channels as opposed to 4.

ALSO!!!! These cameras are NOT weather resistant. The only reason DEFENDER says they are outdoor cameras is because they have night vision. Realistically speaking, these cameras would need to be placed in an enclosure because rain or snow WILL break them.
I'm returning this set and going with a different brand.

The setup for external internet viewing was somewhat challenging due to my home network arrangement. I contacted Defenders customer support for assistance and found the experience quit satisfying. The customer service Representatives were very professional and quickly resolved the issue I was experiencing. Overall I like this camera system. DVR is great. Camera picture is good. You dont need anything but a monitor to make this system work. Comes with a very sensitive mouse... kind of too sensitive. It is hard for an amatuer to set it up for remote viewing via internet or phone. I'll still cant view mine away from home. I know it has the potential to do it but its tough. You have to adjust firewall settings and establish a static ip address. Overall good product though. I have seen better deals out there since my purchase, but they were internet weekend specials and maybe the product was not as good, I dont know.

Consodering Im in a tropical country this can't be very good. Also the hd does not work. I have been instructed bt Defenders parent company to return the DVR for replacemant. The cost of shipping from Trinidad West Indies is prohibitive...It nullifies the fact the the system was reasonably priced. Can't they pre test these things prior to shipping? Great Alarm System - AAS 100, September 1, 2009
I am very pleased with this alarm system. It offers the same things that Brinks, ADT or any other professional security company would do without the monthly bill. After doing a little research I found out that rather if you hire a professional security company or install your own alarm system, it is against the law to have a alarm system dial directly to the police or 911. They will not respond to a pre-recorded message. That is why any professional security company will always call you first before calling the police and that is the same thing that this system will do. It calls you (with your prerecorded message) than you call the police. You also need to contact your local police department to find out if the city you live in requires you to have a (ALARM PERMIT). It only cost an average of $25.00 a year. Without an (ALARM PERMIT), you can be find heavily.

The alarm is easy to install, easy to program and it has a number of great features. If by any chance, someone managed to get in your house with out setting off a door or window sensor, they still won't get passed the motion detectors. The alarm will sound off (which is very loud) and the system will continuously dial up to 6 phone numbers (people that you know) to call the police. If your phone line is cut the alarm will sound off. If someone tries to tamper with the system the alarm will sound off. If you are at home, it can be set to turn off the motion detectors and still arm the door/ window sensors so you can move about your house freely. There are a few other features for personal preference. All in all I think it is a very good system and would recommend it to anyone. AAS also offer a number of different size packages to meet your needs.

I have read all the security reviews on Amazon from all the different security MFG's. Skylink, GE, Bulldog Security etc. I was impressed that the reviews on this product did not mention anything about poor quality, poor range etc. I first called the AAS security people and was impressed that over the phone they could answer all my questions. I would like to let you know that the main programmer/ auto dialer is the same on all their units from AAS100 to AAS600 systems. The only difference is the amount of door sensors, motion detectors, sirens etc etc. They have so many additional add on's for their security system it is incredible, such as remote wireless sirens, smoke detectors, gas detectors, water detectors and more and more. So I ordered a custom unit from them: 1 main programmer/dialer, 1 remote siren and 3 motion detectors and 2 remote key pods. I setup the system on my kitchen table in about 1/2 an hour. The siren is loud, since I purchased the wireless unit it can be placed anywhere you have an AC outlet. The motion detectors work beautiful. Not too sensitive but work at long distances. I put one on the motion detectors in my den and it looks into my kitchen and will detect you if you walk at the end of the kitchen 40ft away.The main programmer has built in battery backup. I have a 3000 sq ft house and I don't know where to put the 3rd detector, the other 2 detectors cover my entire first floor. I've only had it for a week but I am impressed. You have the ability to dial into this system and listen to what is happening, works with my blackberry cellphone. You can set the exit and entrance times and many more nice programming tricks that you do not find in other systems.This security system with my Avaak Vue wireless cameras are perfect. When the alarm goes off I am able to look in and see what's going on from anywhere. Will update in a few months.

UPDATE:
The system is great. No problems. I use VOIP Vonage for my home phone and it works great on out going alerts from the AAS 100 security system, but on incoming calls the Vonage answering service will answer and I can't dial into the AAS 100. SO....I bought the VOIP Grandstream Handystream 286 adapter from Amazon went to CallCentric and signed up for their VOIP phone #. Its perfect for a alarm system because it will dial out and I can now call in to my alarm. Cost? $1.95 per month. GREAT! If anyone finds a better VOIP source let me know!

Second update:
Found out my dog can set off the motion detectors. No problem, raised the pointing angle and now my pug does not set off the alarm. My wife and I set it every time we go out. Even with the dog at home. Love this system.

Had this alarm system for the last two months. Also, bought the GSM Cellular Module, because I don't have a land-line.

After being broken into my previous place, an alarm system was a must have for our new apartment home. Before moving in, I began the installation. At first, I was concerned with the directions which mainly consisted of a photograph example, but the installation was a breeze. The door alarms are simple to mount and based on a flawless technology. The motion detectors were a bit more difficult, but I once I figured out how the jumpers coordinated with the spectrum of detection (which is enclosed in those directions), it was fine. I set mine to a large distance, so I should not have been shocked that the cat set it off. At a mid-distance, my cat didn't trigger it at all.

Although I could have used a bit more description of the modes (HOME, AWAY, etc.), all of the directions for programming the system were clear and concise. The flexibility of this system is amazing. You can program up to 10 phone numbers and customize the timer delays as much as you need to. The key fobs are awesome. I have friends that paid $800.00 for their systems and having had to come by while they are gone, I hate the keypad-only systems. You can set this system using the key fob, which can transmit through our metal door or arm it by phone.

As for the alarm part, I have had this go off accidentally and by design. The accident part had to do with guests who didn't follow directions and my cat. In every case, I was notified soon enough to disarm it relatively quickly. The alarm is loud and deafening inside the apartment, and is certainly loud enough to be heard within the building.

I would highly recommend this system. You can use it with a monitoring company because that is supported, but it certainly beats the $800.00 models that these monitoring companies charge for their systems. Plus installation is easy and DIY. I feel safe at night and when I am away. The day-to-day use is simple and easy to work into your morning/night routine.

Pro: Well written instructions allowing for easy set-up (I used my own velcro mounts instead of their pre-mounted double-faced stickies. Velcro allowed me to make adjustments to position of magnets and transmitters. It will also make life easier for battery changes in future.) Excellent customer service. Well-designed for tailoring how many windows/doors you wish to monitor and how many motion-detectors to place.

Con: Can't order a-la-carte inexpensively. I would have preferred standard motion detectors over the pet-immune, but couldn't customize the order for such.

Easy To Install Alarm System with Excellent Performance., April 2, 2010
It took me less than 2 hours to completely install the system. There were no issues, what so ever, on performance or distance of sensors. It has performed flawlessly, and I would highly recommend this system. It can't be beat for value! Anybody who pays monthly fees for monitoring is wasting their money! The monitoring service has to call you first to get authorization to call the police. This system calls up to 6 phone numbers, consecutively, until it reaches a live person. It will not leave messages. It can decifer between a voice mail and a live person. You can then reset your alarm remotely via the telephone, or call the police yourself. It worked fine with hard line and cell phone for me! I tested both. The only short coming was that after an incident, it does not have a memory to tell you which sensor triggered the alarm. It does flash which sensor has triggered the alarm during the activation, but once reset or unarmed for enterance, it does not have a memory for you to investigate. Regardless, I'm Impressed with this system!

Bought this product based on the many positive reviews. It is quite easy to set up and use, but one problem. The two times I went out of town after installing the system, I had to turn around and come back because the motion sensor in the living room went off. It is mounted in a corner about 8 ft high, but apparently my cat somehow sets it off. Consequently, I now set it on the home setting (just doors and windows) instead. The other thing that kind of stinks is the alarm can't be called and turned on or off from a cell phone. How it knows, I don't know, but this is inconvenient. If it does go off as you are leaving for a trip, you have to turn around and go back since it won't stop calling your cell phone until you do. I think the system is worth the money, you just need to know about a few hick ups before buying.

Exactly what I was looking for. Didn't want monthly fees but looking for a way to protect my home when/while I'm away. Installation was a breeze although took me a while to install. Biggest heartache was the diagram of the motion detector settings was very hard to use. I took a guess and they seem to pick up anything above 5 feet (cats have yet to set it off, even though I have four of them ranging from ten to 15 lbs.) The window sensors, I want to point out, can attach directly to the glass; that is, if the window breaks the sensor or sensor strip falls and sets off alarm. This is important as most intruders are not going to completely open the window after breaking the glass, I was very pleased with these items. So far I can't complain about a thing, would recommend, especially if you are looking at a monthly fee service.

Saves you money but has some draws, November 24, 2010

I bought the AAS 300 system and got the system installed in my house. The system is great and it works perfect. Below is a summary of the good and the bad about this system

The Good
1- No $20 to $50 monthly fee. Whatever you pay for the AAS system, you will eventually be on the positive side because of that monthly fee.
2- The siren is way too loud to alert your neighbors.
3- It dials you number and goes through a list of numbers (up to 6 number), calling each one telling them that the house is being burglarized. By the way, in most cities in the US, they require you to have a permit for your alarm and it is illegal for a non human to call 911. In my city, I have to pay $35 permit for this alarm on an annual basis. The penalty for not getting a permit is $250 at my city.
4- Easy to install
5- Easy to operate using the keypad and the key fobs.

The bad
1- Once the motion/sensor detectors are trigger, the keypad starts beeping and thereby allowing the intruder to locate the keypad and destroy it. You can mitigate this by programming the entry delay to zero and use the keyfob to deactivate the alarm. You can mitigate this by programming the entry delay to zero and by buying a portable wireless keypad outside to disarm the system

I bought the system to monitor my house while I am away. After having it set up for more than a month, I am please with the system and support I received. To start off, the shipping was amazingly fast. I received the items well before the shipping due date. The system was a cinch to set up even for a first time do-it-yourselfer. The instruction that came with the unit was clear and concise. I was able to program all the items in no more than half an hour. The hardest thing for me was finding perfect spot in my house to put the main control. However, I did have a couple of problem with a detector and senor. I emailed the seller regarding each of them. Both times, the seller responded the same day and resolved my issues to my satisfaction.

Installation was simple.

The instructions were easy to follow. (Others have complained that this is an issue, if so they must have updated their manual because mine was great).

The system works flawlessly and so far the company has been very quick to respond to my questions and concerns. (The system was missing the magnetic strips when I first got it, however, a quick call to AAS and they were there two days later).
