Product Description

What makes an effective executive?

The measure of the executive, Peter F. Drucker reminds us, is the ability to "get the right things done." This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive. Intelligence, imagination, and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that mold them into results.

Drucker identifies five practices essential to business effectiveness that can, and must, be learned:
  • Managing time
  • Choosing what to contribute to the organization
  • Knowing where and how to mobilize strength for best effect
  • Setting the right priorities
  • Knitting all of them together with effective decision-making

Ranging widely through the annals of business and government, Peter F. Drucker demonstrates the distinctive skill of the executive and offers fresh insights into old and seemingly obvious business situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting the Right Priorities
The key to being effective in any endeavor is to focus on the essential elements in the task at hand, while discarding the clutter. This is the essence of what Peter Drucker has written about in this wonderful management guide. Not surprisingly, the strategies Drucker proposes closely allign with Richard Koch's The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Success by Achieving More with Less. Drucker didn't categorically state that 80% of our success comes from 20% of our efforts, but that's really the gist of it.

Drucker's focus on time management is based in a solid 80/20 principle philosophy; his advice is sound. If you're trying increase your "executive effectiveness" (and who isn't?), this is a great place to start. The genius of Peter Drucker will certainly help anyone perform their jobs better; and enhance their lives in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transcends the "Business Book" Genre
Drucker defines "Executive" widely -- an executive is basically anyone who makes decisions regarding how to spend one's time in order to further the goals of the organization. By this definition anyone can benefit from reading Drucker's musings: Project Coordinators, low and mid level managers, VPs and CEOs. Drucker's explanation of the difference between manufacturing workers and "knowledge" workers is illuminating. Essentially, anyone not "on the clock" has to manage him/herself, and therein lies the challenge. This book is both a business book and a self-help manual in one, and is the best I've read in either genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sticking to the fundamentals
I read this as an MBA student and it helped a lot throughout my formative years in the business world. Reading it now (12 years later) as the owner of my own business makes me appreciate this classic even more. It's a great book to have at your side to make the most of the most valuable resource: time. As in Drucker's on Innovations and Entrepreneurship, its fundamental lessons are solid foundations to build a career/business on. Read it, learn it, live it and you will get more out of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still relevant after 40 years - Effectiveness is habit
I have taught this book in a dozen university courses. It remains a classic for understanding effectiveness in organizations and specifically "how to manage oneself".

Even after 40 years, the book remains relevant. Most of my students, predominantly in their 20s, feel that the book is relevant for today. The examples are a bit dated and the use of the male pronoun throughout is awkward. Nonetheless those minor flaws are far outweighed with systematic writing and practical insight.

For Drucker, effectiveness is habit, a set of practices that can (and must) be learned. It is neither a skill, nor is it knowledge. Instead it is a set of simple practices which simply must be engaged in regularly. Drucker frees us from the idea that effective people are born, have a talent or temperament for effectiveness.

Effectiveness is "getting the right things done". This is very different from efficiency, which is merely "doing things right". Effectiveness is the key to the growth of the entrepreneurial economy.

The five habits of effectiveness are: 1) knowing where your time goes, 2) focus on outward contribution, 3) build on strengths, 4) concentrate on a few areas that produce outstanding results, and 5) make effective decisions.

Drucker walks through these habits in a highly engaging writing style. He explains and illustrates the habits and provides practical information based on his experience with dozens of executives over decades.

While many of Drucker's books are excellent, this is possibly the one that is most widely applicable for anyone who seeks to become more effective and to manage themselves for effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy guide to becoming a top executive
As an author and an intellectual, the late Peter F. Drucker was a true business sage. Recognized as the father of modern management, Drucker forecast numerous pivotal trends, including decentralization, privatization and the development of the information society. He introduced the concept of the "knowledge worker," a term he employs widely in this fascinating book. His internal study of General Motors, Concept of the Corporation, greatly influenced how businesses conduct their affairs. Each Drucker book is a genuine business classic, including this one. getAbstract believes it will help you think productively about what you do. No one writes more intelligently or presciently on management and its functions than Drucker. All executives, even those who are already effective, will benefit from reading this informative, enlightening book. ... Read more

Product Description

Father of modern management, social commentator, and preeminent business philosopher, Peter F. Drucker analyzed economics and society for more than sixty years. Now for readers everywhere who are concerned with the ways that management practices and principles affect the performance of organizations, individuals, and society, there is The Essential Drucker—an invaluable compilation of essential materials from the works of a management legend.

Containing twenty-six core selections, The Essential Drucker covers the basic principles and concerns of management and its problems, challenges, and opportunities, giving managers, executives, and professionals the tools to perform the tasks that the economy and society of tomorrow will demand of them.

Amazon.com Review

Ever since his first book was published some six decades ago, Peter Drucker has been essential to everyone serious about the "management of an enterprise (and) the self-management of the individual, whether executive or professional, within an enterprise and altogether in our society of managed organizations." This distinguished 30-year Claremont University professor has continuously identified critical principles in management, economics, politics, and the world in general. And he has redirected our thinking about them through more than two dozen books, including an autobiography and a couple of works of fiction. Now, with The Essential Drucker, he has overseen the compilation of his most important fundamentals into one indispensable book.

Reaching back as far as 1954 with his treatise "Management by Objectives and Self-Control" ("Each manager, from the 'big boss' down to the production foreman or the chief clerk, needs clearly spelled-out objectives" that clarify expected contributions "to the attainment of company goals in all areas of the business"), Drucker's now-established ideas take on a surprising new relevancy when remixed equally pioneering ideas from the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. Between the thoughtful "Management as Social and Liberal Art" through the provocative "From Analysis to Perception--The New Worldview" (both originally published in 1988's The New Realities), this book revisits some of modern management's most inspired writing and presents it in a way that should appeal to both newcomers and those needing a refresher course on Drucker's basic beliefs. --Howard Rothman

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essentials of Management
The genius of Peter Drucker is on display with this particular book; his uncanny ability to express, in simple terms, very complex ideas makes his writings so engaging and compelling. The messages are clear and are founded in his personal brand of common sense.

You don't have to be working in a "management" capacity with an organization to benefit from his words of wisdom; it's certainly applicable when simply trying to manage your life. Follow Drucker's instructions, and chances are you'll be successful in practically any endeavor.

Simply stated, Drucker has essentially laid the foundation for enhancing the art of management; from hiring to firing to mentoring to strategic planning. It's all here; and it's all exceptionally good advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read by the most influential and insightful management thinker
This is the best management book I've ever read. Drucker's writing is especially sound and convincing when describing the social responsibilities of managers and large organizations, and how both are essential and deeply integrated members of society, thus they must consider more than simply the well-being of their shareholders. His writings also show how management is an intrinsic part of modern society, as such a society is defined by countless large organizations that organize vast amounts of resources and great numbers of people to execute complex tasks, whether it is running a hospital, a school, a large research firm, or a consumer products company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter Management book
A great compilation of his great works. Great refresher course, if you have read some of his other works. Mr. Drucker has been the foundation of my business from a Management standpoint. My top 3 books would be: Post Capitalist Society, The Daily Drucker, and this book The Essential Drucker. Drucker just provides great observations. Along with Post Capitalist Society (because of his historical approach and stance on Social Responsibility), this book is a great starter book into Management.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Not Exciting Reading
Having read "Management Challenges for the 21st Century" and knowing the reputation of Peter Drucker I was quite eager to read the book. Maybe it was because of the translation (I read the portuguese version) but while it provides some interesting reading, it is sometime boring, too abstract and often out of date. Nevertheless, if somebody is looking for a summary of the lifetime work of Peter Drucker then he will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drucker is a legend who provides historical insights to major management issues
Peter F. Drucker is a genuine management guru. He provides a unique historical perspective(across centuries!) to management issues and thereby provides uniques insights. My favourite is his assertion that there is no "right" or "wrong" organisation structure --only one that is fit for the objective or corporate task at hand.

On a couple of occasions, he showed lack of "cultural sensitivity" by seeming to condem an entire cultural group, but i excused him on the grounds that he's from a different generation.

Overall,he works will greatly benefit humanity by enabling people make the right "global" decisions and understand the complexities of modern business and commerce.

I highly recommend this book to anyone aspiring to become a CEO!!! It will cut down your years of reseach by decades.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but more practice problems would help
When it comes to math, I like a lot of practice problems to build a foundation of new material and work into the more challenging problems. This book does not do that. It does present a lot of information in each section but I would like it much more if it had more practice problems to really let the student get familiar with the new material before presenting more difficult problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I would recommend anyone taking Calculus and needing the work book to also buy this book. It has helped me figure out the harder even numbered problems by giving me an solutions for similar problems. I don't know what I would without it.

2-0 out of 5 stars In a pinch...
Don't wait to the last minute and expect to get all the answers from this book. It contains mostly odd numbered questions, so if your instructor assigns only even numbered questions, you're SOL. If this book didn't have the odd answers then it would be completely worthless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review
It is very helpful indeed. The only downfall is that this book does not cover chapters beyond Ch. 11, therefore if you are taking Calculus BC, you are out of luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Salvation!
This is an excelent book! I bought it right before my final exam (let me point out that I wasn't in the best conditions for that exam)and I passed, eventhough I thought it was impossible that I did.

Appart from saving me, this is a great book to use along with the textbook since it gives you detailed answers for each odd numbered excercise, with process and everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!
This is a fantastic goldmine for every Leader of a nonprofit organization anywhere. Just the two first chapters alone is worth buying the book for. This book is a must for every new Leader or Chairman. The whole organization wil benefit from it. All the more important as good books about nonprofit organizations are hard to find.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly narrow vision of non profit
This book is NOT for international non profit organization staff. It focuses on very specific case studies, like the Girl Scouts of America. Very little can be taken out of this book if you work in a big NGO overseas. No case studies outside of the USA. I guess it could be useful for someone who has no clue and works for the first time in non profit for a small local charity.

4-0 out of 5 stars REALLY good stuff
A lot of this book is just common sense, but it is common sense that is largely lost to us these days. This author talks about how to manage a nonprofit, but he is teaching ethics that will serve you will throughout your entire existence, not just your work. This book is SO worth the money, if you are willing to put its principles to work in your life.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Non Profit Manager Handbook
The Handbook for Non Profit Organizations. Good collection of essays and interviews. A must have for non profit managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Besetting Sin of Leaders
"Don't be afraid of strengths in your organization," writes Peter Drucker. "This is the besetting sin of people who run organizations. Of course, able people are ambitious. But you run far less risk of having able people around who want to push you out than you risk by being served by mediocrity."

Affirm your team at your staff meeting this week with Drucker's reminder that "strong people always have strong weaknesses too. Where there are peaks, there are valleys. And no one is strong in many areas." It takes a village!

Wow! The wisdom still oozes from Drucker's 1990 book on nonprofit management. Many leaders re-read at least one Drucker book a year. If you lead a nonprofit, this is a good place to start. It includes five major sections: 1) The Mission Comes First: and your role as a leader; 2) From Mission to Performance: effective strategies for marketing, innovation and fund development; 3) Managing for Performance: how to define it; how to measure it; 4) People and Relationships: your staff, your board, your volunteers, your community; and 5) Developing Yourself: as a person, as an executive, as a leader.

Drucker's interview with Max De Pree is worth the price of the book. De Pree says, "The first duty of a leader is to define reality. Every organization, in order to be healthy, to have renewal processes, to survive, has to be in touch with reality." The book includes five additional interviews with Frances Hesselbein (goals), Philip Kotler (defining the market), Albert Shanker (accountability), David Hubbard (boards) and Roxanne Spitzer-Lehmann (the woman executive).

As Bob Buford reminded us in the foreword to my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit, Drucker was preaching to both nonprofits and churches when he said, "The purpose of management is not to make the Church more businesslike, but more Church-like."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Daily Dose of Drucker---What Corporate America Needs
The genius of Peter Drucker has been neatly bundled in "366 days of insight & motivation for getting the right things done." This masterpiece is the culmination of Drucker's greatest pearls of business wisdom, from his early work in the late '30s all the way up to his recent efforts shortly before his death.

It's doubtful a more powerful force in analyzing the nature of business will ever come along; at least in this generation. Aided by the brilliant Joseph Maciariello, this book is a wonderful culmination of Drucker's philosophy on how business should operate; by alligning its core values as an organization with basic human decency---honesty and integrity above all else.

The message delivered here is compelling. Clearly, the priniples set forth by Drucker are not being followed rigorously enough by the vast majority of corporate America; hence, the current economic crisis, and the lack of credibility big business has failed to achieve in the eyes of its workers.

Greed & hubris have been major contributing factors in the worst economic meltdown since The Great Depression, but the solution to achieving a long lasting recovery may be found inside the 429 pages of this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK IN GREAT SHAPE!
I was hoping to this book would be in good enough shape to use as a gift. And it was. It was "like new" if not new and completely unblemished. Perfect transaction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Motivation
Just a great book to have on the nightstand. You can awake and read a daily passage about business, Motivation, innovation, management, effectiveness, technology, etc. For me it is a great jump start for the day when I read a quick passage. I find myself grounded, and flooded with ideas. Highly recommend. My favorite Drucker book aside from "Post Capitalist Society".

5-0 out of 5 stars Must be kept on every managers tabletop.
A gem of a collection from Drucker's writings, one for each day of the year. You will find answers or suggestions on any management issue here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not match the Textbook
This solution book does not match the textbook they sell in the online and it does not include the problems but only have textbook's page and problem's number that it is totally useless. Only if you have matching textbook then you can buy it otherwise do not buy it. I returned it right after I received it three weeks ago but I still did not get credit. Again, Do not buy it unless you are absolutely sure you have matching textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars The reason I'm doing well in Calculus
This book is worth its weight in gold. Because my professor is not a very good one, I'm having to teach myself a lot of what we are doing. I could not have made it this far without this manual. If you get stuck doing problems without it, you are just that: stuck. It has all of the worked out problems and answers to all of the odd numbered questions, and although some steps are not shown occasionally, , 95% of them show all you need to see. I will definitely be purchasing the Multivariable manual when I take Calculus 3 next semester, as this one only covers Cal 1 and 2 (through Chapter 12 I think).

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in Gold!
This book is worth every penny I paid...but buy it used if possible. My professor assigns odd number problems and this book provides the solutions to these problems. 4-0 out of 5 stars A powerful book filled with still-relevant concepts!
Even though the book is 20+ years old and the examples could do with a good updating (although, Drucker's examples were not really meant to be "current", as many provided were from the turn of the century and focused on the concepts not the specific technologies), I found the book to be very relevant and insightful. This book really solidifies for me the reason why Dr. Drucker is the "Guru" of management. He presents such strong and lasting frameworks, arguments, and ideas around innovation, entrepreneurship, strategy, and management that I now realize I must read every possible book this man ever wrote just to try to understand these concepts at a deeper level and implement them into my way of working and thinking. This book should be a requirement for MBA students and a bible for entrepreneurs and intrapraneurs alike. It is certainly a book that I could read again and one that I highly recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Thanks Amazon
Amazon suggested this book to me because I had purchased a couple of books on management. This is the first Peter Drucker book I've read and according to his bio on the back cover he is quite a management guru.

Two things tipped me off about this baby though, the first was that all the quotes of praise on the covers are about Peter as an author, not one of them mentioned this book. That's usually a tip off that the book you are about to read is a sub par knock off from an otherwise decent author. The Second tip off was that in the introduction he states "this is not a how to book". Why am I reading this again? That's right because I want to learn how to be more entrepreneurial. The fact that this isn't a how to means that I've got the wrong book.

I did pay my money and I'm was too lazy to return it to Amazon so I did the only practical thing and read it. The first parts where the history of entrepreneurship in the world and in American culture. It was a fascinating read to an extent but still it was like reading a business class textbook. That is if your business class textbooks ranted on about tax policy, preached woe to those who disagree with your ideas for business and also didn't go in depth enough with the case studies to allow you to try to duplicate them in a real business.

The most value I got from this book was the last chapter titled Conclusion. This was an essay that had some suggestions for government that I agree with (get rid of irrelevant agencies), a suggestion for tax policy that I disagree with (stop taxing people), and career advice for professionals to stay educated and stay flexible that by now should be self evident.

So Amazon, thanks for the suggestion but I'm picking my own books from now on.

4-0 out of 5 stars An entrepreneur classic.
An entrepreneur classic. Tremendous insight from an innovative opportunity & entrepreneurial management standpoint. As always, I highly recommend all of Peter Drucker's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Don't be fooled by the reviews of this book so far. This book is a must read for anyone developing products from technology to services. Unbelievable insight. The context is out of date as it was published just as the web was just starting to take off. But the book is still incredibly relevant.

This isn't just for technology companies, but as far as I am concerned, it should be required reading for all project managers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent read - not a page turner but has great concepts
Peter Drucker -the godfather of management science - has done a good job of creating a handbook that contains an excellent set of tools for any aspiring (or current) entrepreneur. This book contains tips for the existing business, start-ups, and non-profits; so there's something in it for everyone. The first part of the book describes Drucker's Seven Steps for Innovation - which provide a great template to use to analyze the environment in search of new business opportunities. Anyone who wants to strike out on their own (like myself) can definitely utilize these steps to help gain direction in their journey.

Admittedly, not a page turner but a good read for any business person who wants to advance their business or selves through innovation and entrepreneurship.

Amazon.com Review

No single person has influenced the course of business in the 20th century as much as Peter Drucker. He practically invented management as a discipline in the 1950s, elevating it from an ignored, even despised, profession into a necessary institution that "reflects the basic spirit of the modern age." Now, in Management Challenges for the 21st Century, Drucker looks at the profound social and economic changes occurring today and considers how management--not government or free markets--should orient itself to address these new realities.

Drucker sees the period we're living in as one of "PROFOUND TRANSITION--and the changes are more radical perhaps than even those that ushered in the 'Second Industrial Revolution' of the middle of the 19th century, or the structural changes triggered by the Great Depression and the Second World War." In the midst of all this change, he contends, there are five social and political certainties that will shape business strategy in the not-too-distant future: the collapsing birthrate in the developed world; shifts in distribution of disposable income; a redefinition of corporate performance; global competitiveness; and the growing incongruence between economic and political reality. Drucker then looks at requirements for leadership ("One cannot manage change. One can only be ahead of it"), the characteristics of the "new information revolution" (one should focus on the meaning of information, not the technology that collects it), productivity of the knowledge worker (unlike manual workers, knowledge workers must be seen as capital assets, not costs), and finally the responsibilities that knowledge workers must assume in managing themselves and their careers.

Drucker's writing career spans eight decades and the years have only served to sharpen his insight and perspective in a way that makes most other management texts seem derivative. While Management Challenges for the 21st Century is no quick airplane read, it is a wise and thought-provoking book that will both challenge and inspire the diligent reader. This book is for people who care about their businesses and careers in the information age--CEOs, managers, and knowledge workers. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

Awful, book was not nearly as good as described. It was completely marked up and in terrible condition. Amazon was wonderful and provided a refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best of Peter Drucker
"Management Challenges for the 21st Century," is the one of the last books that Drucker wrote. The chapters are the most updated of the Drucker books, which is no surprise given that the book was published less than 10 years ago. The author revised his essays that appeared in his earlier publications and books as per his observation and, I guess, feedback theory that he preaches in the "Managing Oneself" chapter.

In the first chapter, the author sets the scope and nature of management in the new relatively open world. He emphasizes the fact that the role of management is not limited by either the company boundaries or the legal boundaries of a state. In the second chapter, the author talks about 'the future that has already happened'. One of these 'certainties' is the demographic change in different parts of the world.

The third chapter lays our clearly that an organization must lead change rather that just responding to change, let alone resisting change. In the new always connected of data overload, the executives should be able to tell information from data. They should be able to screen the data for useful information. The executives should also be able to manage the information flow with his superiors, peers, and subordinates.

In the fifth chapter, the authors describes how the manual worked productivity created the foundation of developed world. The same must happen in developing countries. But the new challenge is not in the improvement of manual worker productivity, the tools for which have been identified already, and have been perfectly in many cases. With the percentage of knowledge based work increasing in the GDP of most countries, the world, particularly the developed world needs to improve knowledge worked productivity. This is a new challenge as the mean and methods of increasing the knowledge worker productivity are not as clear.

Finally the author believes that the knowledge worker must take the responsibility for his continous learning and growth. This is because of the fact that the institutions and structures in the older corporations that took responsibility for navigating the individuals through a predetermined career path do not exist now or are fast disappearing. In fact it is very likely that the worker will outlive the institutions. It is important, therefore, for the individual to know their strenghts, their weaknesses, and the way they produce. Some tools for getting this information is also described.

4-0 out of 5 stars In my opinion, the best Peter Drucker book
Hands down 5 stars. An entrepreneur and business person must read. The best Peter Drucker book. Through his essays, Drucker is able to forecast the future. Tremendous insight into the "Knowledge" worker. Get this book now....

4-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Managing vs. Leading into Focus
A dying paradigm is the idea that you must
manage employees. Instead, you must lead workers.
One reason for the shift from managing to leading is
the simple fact that a manager today likely does not
know the area of expertise for which the subordinate is
responsible. In addition, employees today need to be
treated as if they are volunteers, not employees. They
want more than a paycheck; they seek interesting and
rewarding work. You inspire them by leading, not commanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Many Interesting Thoughts
One of Peter Drucker's last books. He was originally going to write a life's work summary, but changed his mind to write a prophetic type of book. His two big topics are (1) the declining birth rate in developed countries, and (2) the transition from skilled laborers ("tin bending") work to the knowledge worker ("technologists").

His discussions are fascinating and I won't steal any of his thunder other than to say that he feels traditional management techniques based on time and motion studies (Total Quality Management is the latest rendition) do not motivate the knowledge worker.

Drucker's second big point is in extreme harmony with Marcus Buckingham's work (which I suggest reading first). Drucker has a similar message as Buckingham, motivated from a completely different viewpoint.

The book also has some self-help. Do you know what your boss' learning style is? Don't you think you should have asked that on the first day? Drucker thinks so, and explains why. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome: simple, clear, easy to follow!
To the point, easy to follow and understand, actionable, and short!. I hope all the business books were like this one!. Althougth it is mainly written for "non for profits", all the reflexions are equally usefull for corporations.

I read it on a plane trip (2 hours)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Peter Drucker book that makes you think
The five questions are simple, yet the book goes in detail why it's important to ask them in your organization or business. Peter Drucker is a legend and his works show it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good quick read on leadership
Great insight into the The five questions to ask about your organization. Very good quick read. Very interesting learning about : Results Bucket, Customer Bucket, Strategy Bucket, and the Drucker Bucket. This book is really grounded with great theory. I recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Questions, Not Much Depth
If you are looking for a quick overview of a good strategic and planning process fueled by asking the right questions, this is the book for you. It includes all the great information we've come to expect from Peter Drucker.

Unfortunately, if you are looking ideas on how to implement this at your company, you will come up short. It's long on theory and short on application. While I really liked its not-for-profit focus, the average company will probably still require a consultant with some expertise in this area in order to bring it to life. - Karen L. Jett, CMA, author of Grow Your People, Grow Your Business

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Leaders
This is a must read for leaders in any organization. Simple questions aren't necessarily simple to answer and these most important questions are not asked often enough. I'm paid to do this work every day and I'm amazed at how few companies even come close to executing on a fraction of Drucker's wisdom.

The 5 questions are not only expounded upon, but layers of other sagacious questions are presented as well. It will prompt you to facilitate your team to ever greater focus and effectiveness.

If AG Lafley and Jack Welch were still learning from Drucker while at the helm, couldn't you?

5-0 out of 5 stars Prof. Drucker's Classic
A classic. Even the chapter on Sears, a company that has changed greatly since the book was written, is good because the reader can understand those changes better.
a classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Timeless, Classic Drucker
This book is five stars. Great insight into the "practice" of management, as opposed to theory. I highly recommend to all of Drucker's books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading.
To say that this book is remarkably relevant for a publication dating back to 1954 is little better than pointing out that getting out of bed is a prerequisite to a good day's work, or that the 1920 - 1930 architecture of Mies van der Rohe is still the cornerstone of today's architecture. That said, there are many good things to consider with regard to managing a PRIVATE business.

Much is made of management's responsibilities toward society. But this seems to me to be proposed from the context of fear and/or reprisal if management doesn't accept such a responsibility. Furthermore, as the example of `the mystery of the washroom doors' made clear, the managed are content to axe down a washroom door in preference to spending twenty cents of their own money to purchase a new key to replace a lost key, and let the thousands of dollars worth of repair bills fall to management whose fault it was for making a claim for new keys too difficult. `That'll learn em!'

The biggest impediment to management as advocated in this book, is government. Government in consort with a myriad of non-elected bodies now compels a business, through draconian legislation, to conform to a specified role in society. In Drucker's day, this was more a matter of choice. However, with the politically sound MBA acting as the government's executive we have returned to a situation very similar to that of post-revolution Russia where the business was an adjunct of government. This is why the disparity in executive pay compared to the general labour is so acute today. And why this book is outdated.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good management book
A bit dated, but if this book was followed I still think the work place would be much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest management handbooks
The late Peter F. Drucker is the most influential management thinker of the 20th Century. This book was first published in 1955 and consists of five parts plus a proper introduction and conclusion. Drucker, in the Preface, explains that the first aim of this book "is to narrow the gap between what can be done and what is being done, between the leaders in management and the average".

The Introduction - The Nature of Management - consists of three chapters. Within the first chapter Drucker explains that "the manager is the dynamic, life-giving element in every business" and that management "is the organ of society specifically charged with making resources productive, that is, with the responsibility for organized economic advance." In the second chapter Drucker explains that "management is the least known and the least understood of our institutions" and discusses the three functions of management: managing a business, managing managers, and to manage workers and work. The third chapter states that management faces its first test of its competence and its hardest task in the then imminent industrial revolution called `automation'. Drucker does explain that automation is not `technical', but primarily a system of concepts, a concept of the organization of work.

The first of six chapters within Part I - Managing a Business - uses the Sears, Roebuck & Company as an illustration of what business is and what managing it means. Based upon this illustration, Drucker concludes in Chapter 5 that "there is only one valid definition of business: to create a customer. ... It is the customer who determines what a business is." Chapter 6 introduces Drucker's most famous question: "What is our business - and what should it be?" This does look relatively simple, but it is not simple to answer and the author provides guidance. In the next chapter the objectives of a business are discussed: "Objectives are needed in every area where performance and results directly and vitally affect the survival and prosperity of the business." Chapter 8 discusses the tools that management needs to take make decisions today for the result of tomorrow. But no matter how sound the business economics, how careful the analysis, how good the tools, managing a business always comes back to the human element. This is the subject of Chapter 9, which deals with the principles of production.

The first of the six chapters within Part II - Managing Managers - uses automobile company Ford to explain that the "fundamental problem or order, structure, motivation and leadership in the business enterprise have to be solved in the managing of managers." But he also warns that managers are its scarcest resource. Drucker also introduces the major requirements of managing managers, which are detailed in the next five chapters.

The first of the three chapters within Part III - The Structure of Management - discusses the issue of organization structure. The next chapter is concerned with building the structure. Chapter 18 deals with the small, the large and the growing business, which Drucker breaks down into four stages of business size (small, fair-sized, large, very large business). He discusses the problems and potential solutions for each.

The six chapters within Part IV - The Management of Worker and Work - discuss the human elements of business. Drucker uses IBM as an example to show basic problems in managing worker and work, and some of the principles for their solution. He also emphasizes that the management of worker and work is a complex subject. Within Chapter 20 he discusses the worker as a resource, the demands of the enterprise on the worker, the worker's demands on the enterprise, and the economic dimension. The next chapter explains that although personnel management is not bankrupt ("but certainly insolvent") the relationship between a man and the kind of work he does is known due to the Human-Relations school. Chapter 22 details human organization for peak performance or in Drucker's words "the engineering of the individual job for maximum efficiency." The fourth chapter in this section discusses the economic relationship between enterprise and worker. This is followed by chapters on the first-line supervisor and on the professional employee (who is neither management nor labor).

The title of the final part - What It Means to be a Manager - gives away the subject for the three chapters. Drucker believes that a manager has two specific tasks: "The manager has the task of creating a true whole that is larger than the sum of its parts, a productive entity that turns out more than the sum of the resources put into it. ...This task requires the manager to bring out and make effective whatever strength there is in his resources - and above all in the human resources - and neutralize whatever there is of weakness." This requires the manager to balance and harmonize the three major functions of the business enterprise: managing a business, managing managers, and managing worker and work. Chapter 28 deals with decision making. The five phases in decision-making are discussed. The final chapter discusses the manager of tomorrow. Based upon the new demands required, the manager of tomorrow has to acquit himself of seven new tasks.

The book is concluded with a proper conclusion on the responsibilities of management. "... the business enterprise must be so managed as to make the public good become the private good of the enterprise. ...To make certain that this assertion does not remain lip service but becomes hard fact is the most important, the ultimate responsibility of management: to itself, to the enterprise, to our heritage, to our society and to our way of life."

What can one say about a masterpiece like this? Books by Peter Drucker always deserve five stars since they are eye-openers to most of us, but this one is exceptional and possibly the best I have read by him. Highly recommended to anybody involved with management or working within business enterprise, it provides great insights for employees through to chief executive. ... Read more
